If they were to charge for what they want us to pay for…nobody would pay!!! That is why they have unaccountable taxes.

Remember, he went to Isrhell to sign legislation that restricted your freedom. I don’t live in Florida but know a number of people who do as well as visiting there for work often enough to perhaps have a feel for what goes on there. While I do agree with the premise of his statement, I also know (I think anyway) that you Floridians need to be watching the other hand here. Every one should absolutely be able to own their own primary residence without fear of being kicked out in their old age or younger because of property taxes. Totally. But why is this an emerging concept and not something that has been around for decades? Again, watch the other hand…….

The idea is sound and just, and frankly I support it. At SOME POINT in one’s life, we should be truly free.
The problem with implementing such an idea, is so much government revenue comes from the property tax structure. The spending won’t go away, so where will they take the money from instead? Not saying it shouldn’t be pursued, but be realistic – the government is not about to cut spending to match. So, how to balance the checkbook?

Texas has billions of net surplus every year and still won’t do it. Maybe a token, “we’ll raise your homestead exemption a little this year”, which does nothing to offset the rise in prices. I pay over $10K a year in property taxes for my home and a little property I own.
To answer your question, I’d rather have a little higher sales tax or even a state income tax that neither Florida or Texas has. As long as they don’t gouge your eyes out with that. At least I won’t be renting.
Of course just like the Feds, the state governments probably have a crap ton of “fluff” that they could get rid of.
It’s insane at times. So a lot of this property tax goes to school districts. The schools want additional funding, it goes to vote and people continue to vote taxes on themselves not realizing that the “appreciation” on their homes is funding these “extra” needs of the school district. People are stupid.

Going to have all the old bastards voting against repealing the property tax because, “How else are we going to pay for schools, fire, and police protection?”

They are going to fund it somehow. Sales tax? State income tax? They’re not going to shut the schools. So, where is the money coming from?

As far as police, fire, roads, trash, and snowplowing (I live in North ID) I am all for paying for the things I cannot do myself. Government schools are another story. Our property taxes still go to these black holes which are still turning out legions of shambling, texting, slack-jawed, mouth-breathing, brain-dead, vaping Mall Zombies.
As often as us geezers on fixed incomes vote against the school bond levies, the Karens, Beta Males, and all of the school district remoras defeat them. And the elephant in the room is their academic achievements cannot hold a candle to the Charter and STEM schools, religious schools and home-schooled children. Life is a vale of tears.

Getting rid of property tax for your primary residence is a good thing. The question is how to replace the lost revenue in a fair manner. Most local governments rely heavily on the tax to pay for schools, fire departments and police etc.
