Everyone who has the propensity should understand first aid.
Having doctors and nurses around is a great help, but even basic training like an EMT (emergency medical tech, ie.ambulance staff below the level of paramedic) course can give you much better hand’s on training than just reading a book, and these are offered at community colleges, generally about a quarter/ semester class.
They don’t do the 2-week crash courses anymore unfortunately, but that was one of the best things I ever did, and the basis for everything else I learned in med school. Well worth the time and effort.
