In his fourth book, “American Nations: A History of the Eleven Rival Regional Cultures in North America,” award-winning author Colin Woodard identifies 11 distinct cultures that have historically divided the US.
“The country has been arguing about a lot of fundamental things lately including state roles and individual liberty,” Woodard, a Maine native who won the 2012 George Polk Award for investigative reporting, told Business Insider.
“[But] in order to have any productive conversation on these issues,” he added, “you need to know where you come from. Once you know where you are coming from it will help move the conversation forward.”

While I don’t doubt that the US is not and probably never was a monolithic nation I don’t entirely agree with the map that author draws. He is drawing the map down to the county level. In my experience, both in Ohio and North Carolina, I can say that the areas he has lumped in Ohio with Yankee-dom and the rural areas of North Carolina that he has placed in the Tide-water region of NJ and North and East Virginia do NOT share those values.
Lot of generalization here. and how can you just write off South Florida? Tons of Northerners there mixed with Latins. And I know the West Coast of Florida is NOT LAtin America
Greater Appalachia, and the Deep south. Seems to me that many here at NC Renegade fit these two areas. And we should be able to work together.
Yet, there does seem to be a sprinkling of all everywhere, if you take my meaning.
There are many left&right (Extremist) wing nuts to go around in all these areas.
The heartland is and has been under attack, ‘if’ they get the heart of this country, the body dies.
