Preppers are going to have to kill a lot of people to survive. When the “Event” happens, no one is going to a store. If you leave your residence in the first month of SHTF, you will either die or lose all your stuff. I said month as an example. It could be much longer. Remember, when they come for you and your stuff, kill them, and then go over their bodies and take from them whatever you can use. Especially gold bling and good foot wear. Going to a neighbor for a bolt is not quite realistic. Having them come to you is way too dangerous. Slap yourself in the face.
Contrary to what some say here, this is actually very good advice. That is, if you have a tight community/neighbors that you know well, are preppers, and you all have a plan in place. I admit, in an all-out destroy everything war, I don’t want to survive. However, there are plenty of possible SHTF events that won’t destroy everything and you will be glad you prepared. And yes, you will be trading with your other community members or neighbors because the first thing you will do is get together to secure your area so you can survive. No one can do it all alone and no family can do it all alone. Set up as far from big cities as you can, at least 2 hrs. away. Get as self-sufficient as you can. Have varied skills within your community/neighbors.
