Within the context of Paul’s exhortation, He is exhorting the believer to remain free from the religion of man. For we know that the religion that is not from God, will deceive those who think they are free from the bonds of Satan.

2Th 2:9
The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders,

2Th 2:10
and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

All those who fail to “receive the love of the truth” will be duped by Satan. This is what Paul is teaching in this passage.
