People are always saying: follow the money, so here goes. Property (the ship) that can’t be sold for profit prior to this sinking, is removed from inventory as “shrinkage”. The company takes a loss on their taxes, which is probably a benefit. As a result of the damaged/lost cargo, an insurance claim is filed for the cargo. The ship’s company is paid according to their policy, the insurance company can now raise their rates, and the politicians have a story and video they can hand to the media.
