While deployed to “Douchebagistan” Afghanistan in 2009, a buddy of my came up with the phrase “Comfortably Numb”. That was his assessment of the American public then -- it’s only gotten worse today. Folks love those chains of slavery and bondage hanging around their neck. It’s a new form of bling….

Tragedy of the Commons

You are free not to comply!

All of us were born into bondage. We only have the freedom our leaders say we can have, that’s no different than slavery.

Everything we own can be taken away in a moments notice by force by people with badges that can legally murder you and your entire family. That’s not free by any means.

I don’t fully agree that the individual is the only one who can decide if they are free (although it should definitely not be at the discretion of politicians, however this is increasingly the case). This is in part because the general outlooks of people tends to be dulled in terms of prospects and opportunities in the micro and macro sense (therefore this leaves escapism, not necessarily growth). A person can’t do every single thing alone. It would have been helpful if that comment was expounded upon. He’s surely not saying that every man or woman is an island unto themselves because that doesn’t work either. If a wife feels she wants to be free from her husband for instance, is she really, even if she leaves him (and there may be a legitimate reason, and there may be those around her that counsel her to stay). What dynamics is the speaker in the video calling out in such an instance as relates to the individual and the group? The point being that ‘free’ can be relative or it can be connected to something else (the principle aspects of which are lacking throughout the country, which ultimately has led to the dire circumstances). Additionally, the social strata is not aligned with the systems that run the country (socioeconomic, income).
