Most people will view the cartels as merely drug lords using military equipment and tactics to preserve and expand their slice of the drug business.
In my view the cartels are a political force, using the drug trade to fund their military.
The drug trade is not their primary interest;
I think their primary interest and goal is political power and force, with an eye towards becoming the government of Mexico (and the Southwest USA).. the drug trade is just how they fund it.

My guess is that these super rich drug gangs had the vehicles manufactured by their own technicians and bought components from the same Military-industrial complex manufacturers that our own military uses.
Possibly bought them and/or components through “helpers” embedded in Central American militaries and govt agencies
