Backup communications are essential. If this outage continues and you haven’t acquired equipment yet, it may be too late.

Honestly, just how far do you need comms for?

When things get frisky just how far away is your calvary? Can you hold out from the hostiles until they arrive?

One should think that ALL COMS are monitored as those Super Computers in Utah need something to do.

As Sun Tzu speaks about knowing yourself and knowing your enemies to win here is a thought.

“The best way to control the opposition is to lead it ourselves.”

In my case, backup communications are to stay in touch with family, church members and friends. All are within 12 miles. SSB CB does it. We don’t want to be in the dark concerning how one another are doing.
Much panic will follow if we have a widespread long term cell phone outage.
If any of them need something, I am on call.

Also, my internet connection has “glitched” twice this morning. Very unusual.

My MAG have used this to drill out comm plan. So far so good.
The initial notifications to each member took a little bit but we have a 6 hour checkin net going until this is taken care of.

I have not experienced any disruption of service today.
None.
And if there was such a widespread disruption, how would most people access that (Breaking911) twitter post, given that the overwhelming majority of cellphone/iPhone users access the internet via a mobile device.

For neighborhood communications a laminated code card and whistles can do a lot.

We had a strange vehicle in our area last fall, when every home on the street was using their whistles, they FLED at speed.

Better than yelling for help.

Interesting idea for homes reasonably close to one another.
The little 5 watt baofengs we have good for 3/4 of a mile with no line of site and a lot of hill/tree blockage,am impressed with the little buggers for in area comms.,have a lot of them.

Not a bad idea James but looking at Amazon for current prices for the older 5 watt models (newer 8 watt are pricy) I can still buy 100 whistles, a pack of 5X8 cards and laminate for about the price of one Baofeng.

When my neighbors kid loses a whistle, that’s a minor issue. A walkie talkie seems a real kid treat in my experience.

Do you have the ability to recharge those batteries? Grid power might be offline. Solar is useful.

And the possibly minor affect to non military thugs that the WHOLE Neighborhood being QUITE Alerted and moving in on them via whistles seems somewhat useful. Thugs like surprise on their side, I’ve noticed.

Sure startled that NY Tagged car full of diversity recently. We didn’t mind they “got away” was just happy they went away.

Gunfire while sounding like a “cool” idea is quite an interesting discussion with the legal system.

Per Michael Yon a LOT of our military age males coming in on the southern boarder are Chinese.

As the Baofeng are made by the Chinese, I wonder if they would be listening and possibly using Radio Direction Finding on them?

I’ve worked with Search and Rescue in the White Mountains, and we use RDF as well as cellphone pings to help find the lost hikers. You can RDF much farther than you can effectively communicate.

Interesting that our Sun had not one but TWO X-Class solar flares right before the outage, and much more than just cellular networks were distrupted. The video below is worth the two minutes. BTW, the sun just released ANOTHER X-Class flare, a 6.3, the largest of the current 11-year solar cycle. One really strong blast in our direction and it will be lights out, comms out, water out, everything… out. It’s not a matter of if, only when.
