Thus has it ever been. Regrettably, we got too civilized (or perhaps just soft) and lost sight of that, allowing the proliferation of enemies in our midst. Now the problem has gotten so bad we are in an untenable situation, with only solutions that will require almost impossible odds in our favor, in order to enact them successfully.
