I want to preface this as a Tarheel, your own locale May be different….

Here in my AO, carrying a loaded carbine in a car is not legal (edited to add, under some circumstances, see end of post). Yes dear deer hunter, even you who transports your thuty thuty from home to field loaded up for Bambi is subject to run afoul of Johnny Law. While there are some among us who don’t give a rat’s tail about that fact, it remains a possibility that carrying a fighting carbine that is ready to rock in your veh is possibly going to catch you a case.

In today’s climate, a carbine in your car just makes sense. Stored in a nondescript bag like a softball bat bag or tennis bag in your trunk or behind your pickup seat, it brings a level of capability not available in handguns.

We can argue caliber, but that isn’t what this is about and since I’m the blogger here I’m going to concentrate on 5.56 because I like cross platform compatibility from weapon to weapon. I do have a 6.5 Creedmoor SR25 project going on but that is for another day. To quote John Mosby “I never shot a bad guy with a 5.56 who got up”.

With the advent of AR pistol braces and the salad days we find ourselves in, there is almost no excuse for not having this capability in your veh or home. Yes, you give up some velocity, yes M193 needs enough velocity to fragment to perform its best, but the type of weapon I am talking about here is for close engagement of multiple targets with plenty of oomph to do the job.

It is well known that I am a PSA fanboi, Palmetto State Armory’s owner has stated that his goal is to put as many ARs into as many hands as possible while making it all themselves for a profit yes, but at prices anyone can afford. Nitride 10.5 pistol kits are still $279, only up $20 since I built my 3 but an awesome bargain. These kits with a stripped lower and a Magpul rear sight get you a basic weapon for under $350. I added things to all of mine I find necessary on any fighting carbine….er….AR pistol but these things are entirely subjective.

They have great barrels in 1/7 twist, Carpenter 158 bolts, forged receivers and M4 cut ramps. They work people, and while your BCM that cost 4 times as much may be marginally better, it ain’t 4 times better.

The point is that the capability far exceeds your handgun in a situation which may arise in today’s chaotic circumstances. An AR pistol is 100% legal to have in your car, loaded and ready to rock and is 100% legal to conceal with your CCW permit (again, check the laws in your area) I am not going to get into trench coats and walking the streets with one, but it is legally a pistol. Period.

On capability, with a 10.5” AR shooting real M193 you can expect around 2650fps. What does this get you? Devastating performance close up where it matters, and if zeroed at 43 yards for max point blank range with a 4” target size, you are back on zero at 194 yards and on target to 223 yards. Simply put, hold on your target dead on from muzzle to 223 yards and hit inside 4”…..Try that with your 9mm or 45.

Will it frag at 223 yards, nope. Does it matter? Nope. I guarantee that wicked pill will make any shooter have the worst day of their life and stop advancing forthwith. It’s real usefulness however is where most engagements are going to happen, under 50 feet. Even after SHTF, you face much more possibility of up close encounters than sniping across the fields of battle.

This does not replace your 16” carbine with 1-4x optic for every use, but as I have laid out it gets you something the carbine cannot, carrying it like any other handgun in your veh or even under a jacket.

I know I’m going to get asked so:

Each of my 3 are identical except furniture color. They all have a PWS CQB comp which sends blast away from the shooter, I can shoot them without ear pro with no ringing. They all have Sig Romeo 5 red dot sights because they are tough and still on sale for $120 (see video here https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Fuq_N129SAI

They all have slings, they have CMC 4.5lb flat triggers because I love them and they all have Magpul rear sights, Magpul Slim hand guards and Streamlight ProTac XL white lights.

Get nitride for durability and corrosion resistance, not the similar phosphate kits. Get a stripped lower locally or order from PSA or whoever floats your boat. The lower is the firearm by law and has to go to a dealer where you go and do the paperwork to pick it up. The kit ships to your house. Putting them together is easy and tons of info and video is available.

Time is short folks, get the tools you need and practice with them until you can run them well. Remember, pistols for fun, rifles for real.

Concealed handgun permits only apply to handguns only, not long guns or any other weapon…..and that you can carry a loaded long gun in your car if: it is not easily accessible AND concealed at the same time. Concealed it at the discretion of the officer and easily accessible can be as well. A locked trunk and you’d probably be OK, rear portion of an SUV, especially with passengers in the back seat, probably not going to go well. In full view in the passenger seat you’d probably be OK but sort of defeats being discreet.

4. The President presented his vision for the country and he will not back down. Let us hope that justice and sanity will prevail. Because the alternative is the collapse of the country.
5. Nancy Pelosi is evil. Although I knew this before the speech, the verification to the rest of the country was self-evident.
6. Juan Williams is an idiot.
7. I was not the only person who knew that if Hillary had been elected, we would be in WW III right now.
8. Donald Trump is a master showman. The state of the union speech was a production. Its delivery, choreography, personal examples and accomplishments were well delivered. Which is why 76% of the people approved of the speech.
9. The President will stop endless wars to the best of his ability.
10. There is hope that our future may not be as dark as we imagine. But there still is the overwhelming debt that the entire world has accumulated at the behest of their central banks.

We begin 2019, (our 6th year of posting monthly child rapes by illegal aliens in NC), the same way we ended it in 2018, with more children being horribly raped by illegal aliens.

Do you realize, since we started posting the monthly child rape statistics in 2013, (not all them mind you…just the ones we could find that were not purposely 
hidden by the media), that 1,740 illegal aliens have been charged with more than 7,900 child rape/child sexual assaults in NC alone?

Think about that for a minute…. Who in their right mind would allow something like this to occur, much less continue?

I’ll tell you who… your NCGA member would, that’s who, because they’ve done absolutely ZERO to stop it. And now we have the Sheriffs of many of our largest counties in NC openly defying to enforce federal laws! The Sheriffs of Mecklenburg, Forsyth, Durham and Wake have all openly stated, on the record,that they will no longer inform DHS/ICE of illegal aliens they hold in their custody. 

In fact, most every NC county Sheriff who is a Democrat, is refusing to obey federal law. If an illegal alien commits a crime in a NC county run by a Democrat Sheriff, the illegal alien will be allowed to bond out and put right back on the street, either to flee back to wherever they came from or remain here without fear of being deported. They WILL NOT contact ICE/DHS about them.

The only person who can change this is YOU! You HAVE to get vocal and get everyone you know to be vocal as well. Go to your local city counsel and county commissioner meetings, call your Representative’s office in Raleigh, voice your concerns, your objections, raise hell if necessary, until they listen to you. That’s
the ONLY way any of this is going to stop.

The post yesterday outlining this problem on NCRenegade was deleted but not deleted permanently. I changed administrator passwords on the site and restored the first post. This does not explain how the links were redone by the Google application that publishes email.

The hosting service for NCRenegade is under the impression that the issue is malware on individuals’ computers. This would not explain how a post was deleted on the site outlining this issue.

The State of the Union is a mess. This should be how President Trump starts his address to the nation for the State of the Union address. It’s a fact. Why call it anything else?

Our country is $21.9 trillion in debt, the border is open for Drug and Sex trafficking, illegals are coming across, and Democrats want to kill fully developed viable babies.

It’s painfully obvious that there are now two Americas. We are a deeply divided nation! Across America, there is a huge split. Real Americans are outraged at just about everything the Govt does and stands for. For years Obama worked to divide this nation along many lines, and I have to say he succeeded. America is no longer one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

The federal government is to ensure that everyone has the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. A vast majority of Congress are trying to do everything possible to take away our rights.

You have a right to defend your life, liberty and property. If you do not have a right to defend your Life, Liberty, or Property, then all you have is a privilege by permission. If you have to ask permission to defend your rights… you are a slave.

Being a slave is worse than being dead. Winston Churchill said, “If you will not fight for the right when you can easily win without bloodshed; if you will not fight when your victory will be sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than live as slaves.”

There seems to be no middle-ground. Many people are begging for tyranny. The Democrat’s are self-proclaimed socialist/communist. Is it time for two Americas? A Free America and a Socialist States of America?

What is it going to take for Americans to stand up for liberty? Freedom made us the greatest nation ever in the history of mankind. We are on the verge of throwing that all away. Freedom is not free. In June 1788 at the ratification of the Constitution Patrick Henry stated, “Guard with jealous attention the public liberty. Suspect every one who approaches that jewel. Unfortunately, nothing will preserve it but downright force. Whenever you give up that force, you are inevitably ruined.” Henry later said in the same speech, “The great object is, that every man be armed. But can the people afford to pay for double sets of arms? Every one who is able may have a gun.”

I don’t have the space available here to go through all the injustices that our federal government has forced upon us. This hasn’t happened overnight. It’s been over 100 years in the making. Is there even a chance that real Americans can roll back the tyranny that has become more evident as of late? What happens if we don’t make a drastic change in the direction of restoring our Republic and following our Constitution?

Our founders instructed us in many ways what to do when injustice becomes law. Resistance becomes our duty. Thomas Jefferson stated, “What country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance. Let them take arms.” (Thomas Jefferson to James Madison, Dec. 20, 1787, in Papers of Jefferson)

Why do we continue to act as if the government has the authority to tell us when and how to exercise our rights? Why do we continue to allow the government to dictate the conditions of our rights? Are we dead? Are we subjects? Are we slaves?

I will end this with one of my favorite quotes from Thomas Jefferson, “the tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots & tyrants. it is it’s natural manure.”

If you ask me, she is looking mighty thirsty!

UPDATE: I contacted my hosting service. Based on their analysis, they believe that the user’s computers are infected with malware. I wonder where they were browsing to be infected with a porn redirect?

Actually, I do not put porn on my site. So how does this happen? It is part of the attacks on my site by the other side. Which is one of the reasons I switched hosting services. This started happening about a month ago. I do not have any ideas on how to stop this.

This also happens on Twitter as all posts are automatically reposted on my NC_Renegade account. Some of the links were being replaced with links to “dating” services.

On the other hand, I must be doing something right if I am being attacked. The Bible says that people who preach the Word will be persecuted. Think about the resources required to be able to do these kinds of attacks.

IDPA matches are held all over the country. Entry fees are usually around $20. Equipment is your carry gun, a holster and 3 magazine along with about 150 rounds and a cover garment. It is a fantastic and fun way to find the holes in your technique, shooting and equipment before it is for real.

Read about it, much is available for study online but you cannot beat it for a fun way to spend a Saturday that can net you some great and useful trigger time that translates to the real world….something that standing on a square range shooting paper can’t really do. I only wish I had began to do it sooner. It is loads of fun and everyone is incredibly nice and helpful. I guarantee you will not be the only new shooter, in fact there will be many, and you will find an accepting and super helpful crowd. But this is not the reason to try this.

If you are the carrier of a pistol, you are doing yourself a grave disservice to not participate in something like IDPA. It is an entertaining and informative way to test your skill and equipment in a lifelike scenario so you can see the holes in your system. While not a substitute for training with JC, Maxx, NC Scout or John, it is a great introduction into thinking and moving while engaging targets.

Many of us prep for every type disaster under the sun except the one we are most likely to face, a violent confrontation. Carrying a gun does not make you a gunfighter any more than carrying a hoe makes you a farmer.

Moving, shooting and thinking about the environment you are in and learning to do it faster and better can only be accomplished by actually doing. Reading and watching videos will not cut it.

I encourage you to seek out some matches, and then take part.

For Reasons….

I decided I needed a .22lr that would be the base for a project that would meet several specific criteria. This rifle would need to be capable of hunting as well as putting lead into a hat at up to 300 yards once the balloon goes up. Don’t question me as to this criteria or my reasons, just come along for the ride and buckle up sweetie. The Hoppes and tinfoil is included on this trip so, if you’re ready……

My brother-from-another-mother has birthed into several of my tribe the desire for accurate and capable rimfire rifles. I have wanted a CZ 455 Tacticool or Precision Trainer for a good while and my first inclination was to just go ahead and get one. I mean, everyone knows bolt guns are mo betta…. right?

The .22 demi-god from the far west though began whispering in my ear “semi-auto is a force multiplier” and “10-22s can be hammers with top quality parts”…. Before you know it I am looking at 10-22T models. They are $400+ and other than the heavy barrel… Meh. Regular stocks and triggers with questionable barrels that end up being a lottery.

Then, while perusing the local classifieds, I saw it. A nicely built 10-22 with all Kidd Innovative Designs internals including trigger guts, bolt, V block and all the rest. It wore Kidd’s 20″ stainless match barrel in a black Boyd’s Pro Varmint stock. It was a good price for what was some really expensive stuff and had been used in 100yd bench rest and had shot 6″ steel out to 300yds.

I waffled. I could get a 455 Tacticool for less…

I contacted the guy again and told him to mail it to me.
He obliged.

After some inspection, a few things became apparent, the factory Ruger receiver was machined/cast with the barrel bore canted. Also, the screw holes for the scope rail were stripped and were not even centered on the receiver. After reading that these were common problems, I decided to go all in. I ordered a Kidd Innovative Designs receiver, their complete aluminum 2lb trigger, their 20MOA rail and a 16.5” threaded barrel to replace the 20” Kidd barrel.

After these parts, the rifle was all Kidd components except for the stock, which was a professionally pillared and steel block bedded Boyd’s ProVarmint. I found a nice PA mil/mil 4-14x scope which is known to track well and has 30+ mils of vertical adjustment, which with the 20MOA rail would easily get me 400 yards. The glass quality is more than adequate for 400 yards so no Uber expensive scope is necessary, only that it tracks and is repeatable when dialing. I mounted it in some nice low rings, sighted it in at 50 yards and began to see incredible accuracy. It has shot many low .100s with a best to date of 5 shots into .116 at 25 yards (now shoots under 1/10” regularly). I packed it up and took it to a meetup with friends where the plan was to shoot 22s out to 400 yards and test our entire premise, could 22lr be an effective rifle to use for … varmints.

Had the opportunity that weekend to shoot some long distance with the rifle.

Took it all the way to 400 yards with 3 different types of ammo. Eley Contact, Federal Gold Target 711B and Federal Bulk (for giggles, but it surprised me and some others)

Eley Contact is incredible ammo for this purpose, it is 42g at 1090fps. Those extra 2 grains really help with the wind and help it to be a very good penetrator as a solid. At 400 yards, it will penetrate 5/8 pine.

Dialed the scope out through 400 based on my ballistic calculator Strelok Pro. Zero was 50 yds. Actual dope was as follows.

Contact was :
100 ^ 2 mils
200 ^ 7 mils
300 ^ 13 mils
400 ^ 20.3 mils

Fed Gold Target was :
100 ^ 2.5 mils
200 ^ 7.5 mils
300 ^ 14 mils
400 ^ 22 mils

Fed bulk 550 (high vel, not subsonic)
100 ^ 1 mil
200 ^ 5 mils
300 ^ 11 mils
400 ^ 18 mils

Some observations…

Wind is hard on .22lr out past 300 yds.

At 400 yards, a subsonic rimfire is dropping 280+ inches! At 300 it is 140+ inches. Dialing accurate turrets and knowing your dope and range is critical.

A good spotter with a good spotting scope is essential to acquire that dope.

400 yards is a LONG way for .22, 300 is out there. Both are doable and make you feel like a million bucks when you find your hold and put em on steel.

200 yds, saw easy under baseball sized groups, rapid fire with swirling wind. 300 yards saw about 6” groups … winds man…and 400 was minute of man to head size depending on wind….the wind wrecks havoc by then on subsonic ammo.

The surprise for me was how well the plain bulk Federal from the 550rd boxes did. The much talked about trans-sonic transition did not seem to affect a thing with these projectiles like they can with spitzer centerfire bullets.

What did I accomplish? What did I learn? As things turn more … sporty, an easily handled, quiet (even unsupressed) rifle with easily affordable ammunition that can put 10 rounds into 10 hats as fast as you can acquire sight picture and pull the trigger is indeed a force multiplier. Imagine the chaos when varmints realize that their varmint buddies have head or neck wounds pumping out blood. You have to realize that even at 400 yards, a subsonic 22lr is clipping along at over 700fps, with a pretty high sectional density and not much chance of deformation. In other words, it will penetrate extremely well, a small hole perhaps but it’ll go deep.

We had people connect with even Marlin 60s, with of course larger groups, but what I want folks to get is that these are real tools that with some care and parts, from high end models to common ones, these rifles will be useful. Get on it. Get your stuff sorted now. Make range cards, get plenty of your preferred ammo while it’s cheap and practice.

UPDATE* The rifle now wears an Athlon 6-24x FFP mil/mil glass and the stock has been modified with rear steel bedding to match the front. It will shoot under 1/10” with Eley BULK ammo….it is an absolute HAMMER.
