COLUMBIA — A bill that would have made the Muslim world’s Sharia law an illegal defense in South Carolina courts was narrowly defeated in the state Senate on Wednesday, killing it for the year.
The measure, sponsored by Charleston Republican Rep. Chip Limehouse, would have prevented an attorney from arguing that the laws of a client’s home country allow for certain actions in South Carolina.
“I’m not surprised,” Limehouse said of the bill’s failure to advance. “The Senate can be the graveyard of many good ideas.”
Limehouse said the measure was needed to curb the advancement of terrorist organizations in the country.
“Paper Gun Leads to School Lockdown in Hartford,” NBC Connecticut reported Tuesday. A student made a crude representation of a handgun using rolled up paper and brought it to McDonough Expeditionary Learning School for sixth to eighth-graders. Unsurprisingly, considering the mentality running public schools these days, school authorities sounded the alarm for men with guns to come save them.
“Everyone is safe and the lockdown has been lifted, according to police,” NBC advised. How the police could assure the first part of that claim is left unexplained. We are, after all, talking about supposed adults who freaked out over the crude facsimile in the above police photograph. Who could see that and feel justifiably threatened?
Why this even made the news tells us much. As does the ruthless “reconditioning” the poor kid can now expect to be subjected to.
So what should have been done? Barring a lot more to this story than is being told, how about this?

Mill City Press, a small Minnesota-based ‘vanity press’ publisher describes ‘The Confessions of Congressman X’ as ‘a devastating inside look at the dark side of Congress as revealed by one of its own.’
‘No wonder Congressman X wants to remain anonymous for fear of retribution. His admissions are deeply disturbing.’ The 84-page exposé is due in bookstores in two weeks, and Washington is abuzz with speculation about who may be behind it.
The book, a copy of which DailyMail.com has seen, discloses that the congressman is a Democrat – but not much else.

On Wednesday, the Platform Committee of the Texas Republican Party voted to put a Texas independence resolution up for a vote at this week’s GOP convention, according to a press release from the pro-secession Texas Nationalist Movement. The resolution calls for allowing voters to decide whether the Lone Star State should become an independent nation.
Texas was, in fact, its own country for nine years before joining the United States in 1845, and while the idea of returning to independence has never been taken seriously by most people, it remains popular as a romantic notion and marketing hook. Lone Star beer is the “national beer of Texas.” Texas Monthly is the “national magazine of Texas.” In a 2009 rally, then-Gov. Rick Perry hinted that the state could secede if “Washington continues to thumb their nose at the American people.” He later backed off the idea. (Representatives of the state GOP and Texas Nationalist Movement could not be reached for comment.)
The Texas Nationalist Movement, once considered a quixotic fringe group, has added hundreds of members in the years since the election of Barack Obama.According to the Houston Chronicle‘s Dylan Baddour, at least 10 county GOP chapters are coming to the convention supporting independence resolutions. But this will be the first time in the state’s 171-year history that they will actually vote on one. It’s very unlikely to win. Then again, that’s what people said about Donald Trump.

Any Republican president would put President Obama’s progress on economic security in danger, make moves to repeal health care reform that millions of Americans are now relying on, and try to move backwards on the steps we’ve taken these past seven years to make our country more equal and more fair.
