Major U.S. Retailers Are Closing More Than 6,000 Stores

Closed - Public DomainIf the U.S. economy really is improving, then why are big U.S. retailers permanently shutting down thousands of stores?  The “retail apocalypse” that I have written about so frequently appears to be accelerating.  As you will see below, major U.S. retailers have announced that they are closing more than 6,000 locations, but economic conditions in this country are still fairly stable.  So if this is happening already, what are things going to look like once the next recession strikes?  For a long time, I have been pointing to 2015 as a major “turning point” for the U.S. economy, and I still feel that way.  And since I started The Economic Collapse Blog at the end of 2009, I have never seen as many indications that we are headed into another major economic downturn as I do right now.  If retailers are closing this many stores already, what are our malls and shopping centers going to look like a few years from now?

The list below comes from information compiled by About.com, but I have only included major retailers that have announced plans to close at least 10 stores.  Most of these closures will take place this year, but in some instances the closures are scheduled to be phased in over a number of years.  As you can see, the number of stores that are being permanently shut down is absolutely staggering…

Rev. Graham: Indiana ‘Surrendered’ to ‘Sexually Immoral Agenda of Gays and Lesbians’ – U.S. ‘Has Forgotten and Forsaken God’

“Make no mistake: This is a watershed moment in the battle for the moral soul of our nation,” said Rev. Graham in his column for the May issue of Decision magazine.  “Media, government and business all aligned their influence to override the initial legislation and severely weaken genuine protections for people of faith.”

“The elected representatives and governor of Indiana bowed at the feet of godless powers and chose to protect sexual orientation rather than religious conscience,” said Rev. Graham. “They cravenly surrendered to the intolerant, sexually immoral agenda of gays and lesbians, and they left at great risk any business or individual that wants to live by an informed, biblical conscience.”

The RFRA is essentially designed to prevent the government from substantially “burdening” someone’s religious belief unless there is compelling government interest to do so. Indiana’s law passed the Senate there 40 to 10 and Gov. Mike Pence (R )  signed it into law on March 26.  Although nearly half the states have similar laws, gay and lesbian activists protested vehemently and wealthy, influential homosexuals, such as Apple Inc. CEO Tim Cook also objected.

Prosecutor: Freddie Gray ‘Illegally Arrested’ With ‘Lawful’ Knife

Baltimore State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby said Friday that 25-year-old Freddie Gray was “illegally arrested,” and upon being handcuffed, officers found a knife that was “clipped to the inside of his pants pocket” – which was “not a switchblade and is lawful under the Maryland law.”

After making eye contact with three officers on bike patrols, Gray ran from the officers, who then pursued him, Mosby explained. Once the officers caught up with Gray, they handcuffed him behind his back.

“It was at this time that Mr. Gray indicated that he could not breathe and requested an inhaler to no avail,” Mosby said. Officers Garrett Miller and Edward Nero “then placed Mr. Gray in a seated position and subsequently found a knife clipped to the inside of his pants pocket. The blade of the knife was folded into the handle. The knife was not a switchblade and is lawful under the Maryland law.”

We live in an age of sensationalism. We find ourselves in an era where every headline has to grab your attention, regardless of its substance in order to generate your digital patronage.

That’s the news industry in which we live.

I’m hoping this can cut through that.

To the looters, to the vandals, the felons, the people in Baltimore (and elsewhere) ruining this great Republic of ours: before you call me a racist, before you call me insensitive… understand that to use both would be an oxymoron.

It is my complete lack of any interest in your race, background, gender, personal beliefs and/or struggles that makes me an insensitive jerk. I accept that. It also makes me incapable of discrimination.

You are animals. If you are able to destroy the home or business of your neighbor, you’ve lost your humanity. If you are able to harm your fellow man, to scare their children, to do so with a clean conscience, merely because of something that some cop may or may not have done, which has nothing to do with you… you are a horrible human being. You disgust me, as you should anyone who wishes to be a part of civilized society.

China, Russia Unveil First-Ever Mediterranean Joint Naval Exercise

Sabre-rattling much? For the first time in history, Chinese and Russian navies will begin a significant joint naval exercise in The Mediterranean Sea in mid-May. As RT reports, Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Geng Yansheng, “The aim is to deepen both countries’ friendly and practical cooperation, and increase our navies’ ability to jointly deal with maritime security threats,” but diplomatically added “these exercises are not aimed at any third party and have nothing to do with the regional situation.”Against a background of this week’s “upgraded Japan-American military relationship” following Abe’s visit to Obama, as one analyst notes,“the geopolitical significance of its exercising alongside Russia will not be lost on the U.S. and NATO.”

If you’ve ever been curious about software defined radio (SDR), this USB stick is the easiest way possible to have fun with a powerful, configurable receiver. Packed with the powerful RTL2832U and R820T tuner, it can tune into signals from 24MHz to 1850MHz. That means you can use a computer (with Windows, Mac, or Linux) to tune into: FM Radio, AM signals (but not AM radio), CW (morse code!), unencrypted radio signals (such as those used by many police and fire departments), POCSAG pagers, and more.

We plugged it into our windows computer and used Zadig+SDR# to poke around and listen to the wireless world around us, it’s lots of fun!

We have a basic getting-started tutorial here, and theres way more tutorials at these fine sites:

Comes with a very compact (but very good quality) RTL2832+R820T module with an MCX RF connector, and a basic ‘DVB-T’ antenna (used to tune into DVB TV signals, not available in the US but will work in Europe or any country with DVB-T broadcasts) as well as an IR remote which isn’t terribly useful. The antenna seems OK for basic experimentation. We also have some MCX to BNC and MCX to SMA adapters (see below) which you may want to use to connect a better antenna.

Please note! Depending on your location, listening in to some radio signals may not be legal. So consider this your warning to check before ‘accidentally’ tuning into naughty frequencies.

Michael Moore: ‘Disarm Police,’ Release Blacks Imprisoned For ‘Nonviolent Offenses’

On April 30 2015, Micheal Moore tweeted his “demand” that police be disarmed and “every African-American currently incarcerated for…nonviolent offenses [be] released from prison today.”

Moore did this through a series of three tweets, in which he lamented what he sees as America’s mistreatment of black citizens.

In the first tweet, sent at 3:16 a.m., Moore wrote: “Imprison u, shoot u, sever your spine, crush your larynx, send u to war, keep u poor, call u a thug, not let u vote. But u can sing for us.”

In the second tweet, sent at 4:03 a.m, he wrote, “Here’s my demand: I want every African-American currently incarcerated for drug ‘crimes’ or nonviolent offenses released from prison today.”

We have resumed our first Saturday meeting schedule!  The NCAR monthly meeting will start at 11:00 AM in Charlotte, NC at the Firewater Restaurant in the Lake Room. The NCAR General Assembly gathers on the first Saturday of every month to conduct the official business of the state. The meeting is also open to citizens and interested persons.

On The Kelly File Wednesday night, reporter Leland Vittert reported that there is “a whole new mood out here now among law enforcement.”

Since the Republican governor got involved, the  National Guard, lots of uniformed Baltimore police officers, and dozens of riot police have been on the scene and “ready to respond at a moment’s notice.”

Vittert said that there would be two orders for law enforcement if they were pelted with rocks and bottles: #1 is shields up, gas masks down, and #2 is deploy the tear gas.

He also noted that law enforcement was not happy that they had been given the stand-down order while the looting was going on, and instead had to stand there and get pelted with rocks, and bottles.

Demonstrators marching in Boston after Baltimore death

Demonstrators expressed solidarity with those in Baltimore protesting the death of Freddie Gray.

More than 500 demonstrators marched through Boston on Wednesday night to show solidarity with those protesting the death of a young black man who died earlier this month in police custody in Baltimore.

Protesters gathered behind Boston police headquarters in Roxbury at about 6 p.m. and were greeted by Police Superintendent-in-Chief William Gross, who waded into the crowd to shake hands with organizer Brock Satter.

“I’m a student of history,” Gross, the department’s first black police chief, told Satter. “If people didn’t protest what they felt was injustice, I wouldn’t be here in this capacity today as chief.”

The rally began soon after with a call and response chant of “Hands up!” “Don’t shoot,” and Satter laid out the demands of the group, called Mass Action Against Police Brutality.

“We have a clear message,” Satter said. “We’re gonna demand the government indict the killers of Freddie Gray. If you want peace, if you want calm, jail the killers of Freddie Gray.”
