The United States has accepted two new immigrants for each additional job created since 2000, according to federal data.

The data shows that 18 million legal and illegal immigrants settled in the United States from 2000 to 2015, while only 9.3 million additional jobs were created, according to the Center for Immigration Studies, which favors a reduced level of immigration.

After subtracting deaths, departures and retirements among the immigrants, the working-age population of immigrants grew 12 million since 2000, according to data at the Bureau of Labor Standards, said Steve Camarota, the author of the CIS study.

That’s equal to three years of American births.

A 46-year-old Chapel Hill man has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder after three college students were shot and killed Tuesday evening at a condominium complex on Summerwalk Circle in Chapel Hill, authorities said.

Craig Stephen Hicks turned himself in to the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office in Pittsboro following the shooting, which happened in the Finley Forest complex off Barbee Chapel Road shortly after 5 p.m.

Deah Shaddy Barakat, 23, of Chapel Hill, Yusor Mohammad, 21, of Chapel Hill, and Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha, 19, of Raleigh, were pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

U.S. forces in Afghanistan killed a “former Taliban commander” and seven of his associates on Monday in Helmand Province “because we had information that they were planning operations against U.S. and Afghan personnel there in Afghanistan,” Pentagon spokesman Rear Adm. John Kirby told reporters on Tuesday.

Kirby said the former Taliban commander — Abdul Rauf Khadim — swore allegiance to ISIS/ISIL just a few weeks ago. Kirby also confirmed that Khadim is a former Guantanamo Bay detainee: “He was released in 2007. He was released to Kabul,” he said.

Kirby described the U.S. targeting of Khadim as “proof” that former Gitmo detainees “return to the battlefield and to the fight at their own peril.”

Syrian army tears through the south to sweep Iran and Hizballah up to Israel’s Golan doorstep

The large-scale offensive the Syrian army launched in southern Syria Sunday, Feb. 8 – the broadest in that region in the nearly-four year conflict – heralded Act III of the Iranian-Hizballah drive for a position on Israel’s Golan border,DEBKAfile’s military sources report. Israel curtailed Act I on Jan 18 with an air strike which killed a dozen Iranian and Hizballah officers scooping out the Golan town of Quneitra for their new base. Among them were the commander of Iranian forces in Syria, Revolutionary Guards general Mohamad Ali Allah Dadi and a senior Hizballah officer Ali al-Tabtabani.

This cut short a move to seize a forward position in the northern Golan and adjacent Hermon.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon then reiterated that Israel would not permit Iran and Hizballah to create a military enclave there for their forces to jump-start terrorist strikes and rocket attacks against Israel.

That is not the shocking part: in fact, it has been largely anticipated for a long time. What is, however, is the following stark admission that in the next round of retaliatory escalations, sparks will fly. Literally:

Russian defense analysts polled by The Moscow Times said unanimously that U.S. arms transfers to Ukraine would be interpreted in Moscow as a declaration of open proxy war with Russia and inevitably lead to escalation of the conflict.

“Moscow will not just sit by calmly and see what happens, it will counteract,” he said.

As for the target? Well, one could say they saw it coming from a desert away:

The Russian counterstrike could take the conflict far beyond Ukraine, according to the source on the Defense Ministry’s public advisory board.

Pointing to one possible avenue of asymmetrical retaliation, the source said Moscow could give in to long-standing Chinese requests for sensitive defense technologies that would aid in its development of high-tech weapons capable of doing serious damage to U.S. naval forces in the Asia-Pacific. Moscow has so far declined China’s requests on “politically correct pretenses,” the source said.

The punchline:

“That’s just one example. We can also encourage Iran, or even back Iran in a fight — a military operation — with Saudi Arabia, so then the prices for oil will skyrocket,” the source said, explaining that these were just two possible responses.

I recently reviewed my county’s emergency plan. All I will say is that it needs some work. In the case of a real emergency, what will your county do? I suspect they have the same thoughts as the commissioners in Haywood County, NC. I suggest that you request and read your county’s emergency plan and take the appropriate actions based on it.

Overbearing language in Haywood County’s emergency management protocols is being revised to make it more palatable to civil liberty watchdogs.

The provision to trespass without permission of the property owner is also offensive to some, but would be critical if a truck carrying radioactive waste ran off the Interstate and needed to be cleaned up immediately, Ensley said.

Another section in the crosshairs: a provision allowing the county to seize supplies and redistribute them. It’s supposed to keep merchants from charging $50 for a bottle of water, pack of batteries or gallon of gas in an emergency.

But it’s also a direct affront to the so-called “preppers” who have stockpiled food and ammunition in fallout bunkers. Their hard work to prepare for a doomsday scenario would be negated if county officials turned up on their doorstep, demanding they hand over their provisions.
