Did You Know that Iraq Is Falling to al Qaeda?

Maliki seeks to declare state of emergency after Sunni militants with Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant overrun northern city.

Islamic extremists have seized control of much of Mosul in northern Iraq after troops abandoned their posts and government buildings, in a serious blow to Baghdad’s efforts to slow a raging insurgency.

After four days of fighting in which the country’s third most populous city all but slipped from its grasp, Baghdad announced it would arm citizens in a bid to curb the threat from extremists in three cities and much of the northern countryside. Details about the plan were initially sparse, but Iraqi officials suggested a collaboration between tribal leaders and the US military that quelled an insurgency in 2007 might be used as a template.

The incumbent prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki, said during a televised news conference that he had asked the Iraqi parliament to declared a state of emergency.

Al Qaeda-ISIS conquers Iraqi Mosul, links up with Syrian front for core of Islamist state

Al Qaeda in Iraq (ISIS: Islamist State of Iraq and Syria), captured the northern Iraqi oil city of Mosul, capital of Nineveh Province, Tuesday, June 10, after the Iraqi military defenders caved in and fled. Mosul is Iraq’s third largest city after Baghdad and Basra with a population of around two million.

Ministers in Nuri al-Maliki’s government have sent desperate appeals to the Obama administration for help to save Baghdad and Iraq from doom.

DEBKAfile’s military sources report that the Iraqi army’s command facilities and bases in Mosul are ablaze and many bodies of Iraqi soldiers are lying in the town’s streets. Convoys of fleeing troops were ambushed by the invaders and destroyed.
The fall of Mosul with heavy casualties is the worst disaster suffered by the Iraqi army in its feeble attempts to fend off the deep inroads Al Qaeda has been making in the country for more than a year. ISIS now controls two major Iraqi cities, after capturing Fallujah earlier this year, has overrun parts of Ramadi and Tikrit, as well as eastern provinces bordering on Iran, Diyala province and parts of the town Baquba, where just Tuesday, 20 people were killed in two explosions.

The loss to Islamist terrorists of Mosul, home to Arab, Assyrian, Christian, Turcoman and Kurdish minorities – and the site of Old Testament prophets such as Jonah – is critical for six additional reasons outlined here by DEBKAfile’s counter-terror and military sources:

Precious Metals Jump As China Unwind Fears Spread

While we have become conditioned to accepting the morning meltdown in gold and silver prices that occurs with all too frequent visible-handedness around 8am ET, this morning’s mini melt-up is odd for 2 reasons: 1) It’s Tuesday, which means sell everything that’s not stocks; and 2) as we explained here and here, the unwind of the China CFDs could well lead to a notably higher gold (and silver) price as the forward hedges are lifted.

As we noted here, if we are right that somehow China managed to push gold lower via gold CFDs, then the unwind pushes gold higher:

Here’s how that might work:

Indiana sheriff wants military vehicles because “the USA has become a war zone”

(Source: Timothy A. Clary/AFP/Getty)

PULASKI COUNTY, IN — As the Department of Defense continues to flood America’s local police departments with military equipment, some cops are letting the propaganda and the free toys go to their heads.  One sheriff in Indiana let out a disturbing admission that he views America as a battlefield — making it imperative, in his opinion, to equip his deputies with gear fresh out of the hands of U.S. soldiers fighting overseas.

“The United States of America has become a war zone,” said Pulaski County Sheriff Michael Gayer in an interview with the Indianapolis Star.

His department has received attention after it sought out and acquired a Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle through the Pentagon’s police militarization program.

When did our police change from “To Protect and to Serve” to “It’s a lot more intimidating than a Dodge”?
The real question is why do they want to intimidate the people in the land of the free?

Bill Gertz: U.S. in Talks with Snowden on Possible Plea Deal

Edward Snowden / AP

Federal prosecutors recently held discussions with representatives of renegade National Security Agency (NSA) contractor Edward Snowden on a possible deal involving his return to the United States to face charges of stealing more than a million secret NSA documents, according to U.S. officials.

Snowden is currently in Moscow under Russian government protection after fleeing Hawaii, where he worked in NSA’s Kunia facility, for Hong Kong in May 2013. U.S. officials have charged him with stealing an estimated 1.7 million documents from NSA Net and the Joint Worldwide Intelligence Communications System (JWICS) and providing some materials to news outlets.

Discussions on Snowden’s return were held in the past several weeks between prosecutors in the Justice Department’s National Security Division and Plato Cacheris, a long-time Washington defense lawyer who in the past represented several U.S. spies, including some who reached plea bargains rather than go to trial.

Francis Porretto: The New Paradigm

[Up for a little more Freedom Fiction, Gentle Reader? This one is mine. — FWP.]

Less than half a second after the alarm light flashed on his intercom panel, Integral Security Services commander and CEO Kevin Conway surged out from behind his desk, plucked his life vest from his coat tree, and sprinted down the stairs toward the monitoring room.

He donned the vest as he ran. People were scurrying and red lights flashing throughout the building. As he passed through the ready room, he distributed quick shoulder pats and murmurs of encouragement to the officers garbing for battle, then moved as swiftly as was politic to the large, dark chamber that housed Integral’s twenty-four-hour audio / video monitoring operation.

The officers on duty at the monitoring stations were unusually quiet even for them. The overhead screen tuned to the feed from Integral’s drone aircraft displayed the reason: a SWAT team of considerable size assembling in the staging area behind Onteora County’s First Precinct.

This one could get ugly.

He stooped to whisper to the young woman attending to that data stream.

“Do we have a target yet, Phyllis?”

She shook her head, eliciting a faint rattle from her headgear. “Still quiet, Boss. Orders should be coming down…wait one.”

Conway held his breath. On the screen, a police lieutenant was unfolding a stapled sheaf of papers.

“2317 Kettle Knoll in Foxwood, Boss,” the young woman murmured.

That’s Art Giordano’s place.

Which Republicans actually want to win? Here’s how you can tell

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) are cruising to primary victories Tuesday after fighting Tea Party challengers every inch of the way.

It’s not that their opponents are formidable. It’s just that the incumbents decided early that it was better to crush them rather than merely beat them.

Both incumbents showed fire in the belly. Their campaigns are the latest proof that establishment Republicans can triumph over insurgents if they really want the win and do what it takes to turn that hope into reality.

T.L. Davis: Solitary Journey

christian mercenary

Are you a Three-Percenter? Really? Are there conditions upon which you will act? Are there things you will not do? Are there methods or tactics you refuse to utilize in the fight for liberty? Yes, there are. Rationally, the good people of the patriot community are some of the best human beings I have ever met. They are upright, honest and decent people. They are earnest and dedicated and as such, they are not evil enough to succeed in the upcoming fight. They are not organized, they are not criminal, they are not psychopaths and as such they are not capable of the type of horror that is required to vanquish an evil and psychopathic foe.

This is not the Revolutionary War. We do not have monied interests on our side. The monied interests are the corporations that understand how to do business with the corrupt governments of the world. They would rather buy their waivers and concessions than fight for a liberty they do not even want. They want corruption. Corruption helps them to disadvantage their competitors and purchase advantages for themselves. In 1776, some of the monied interests understood that they could get a better deal with a new and naive United States than they could with the King of England. America was a distant continent with advantages as an independent nation and they took a gamble. They don’t have to gamble anymore, because the riches have alread been distributed.

One-year-old Bounkham, “Little Bou Bou”, is still in the hospital, critically injured. He was injured when officers threw a flash stun grenade into the Phonesavauhn family’s home and it landed in the play pen right next to the sleeping toddler, blowing up in his face and chest.

He is the face of the Drug War, which allows violence and oppression of low-income people and people of color under the guise of “fighting” drugs. When they’re killing our grandmothers, like Kathryn Johnston, and nearly killing our babies, like Little Bou Bou, it’s time decide where our priorities lie.
