The Federal Reserve Seems Quite Serious About Tapering – So What Comes Next?

Will this be the year when the Fed’s quantitative easing program finally ends?  For a long time, many analysts were proclaiming that the Fed would never taper.  But then it started happening.  Then a lot of them started talking about how “the untaper” was right around the corner.  That hasn’t happened either.  It looks like that under Janet Yellen the Fed is quite determined to bring the quantitative easing program to a close by the end of this year.  Up until now, the financial markets have been slow to react because there has been a belief that the Fed would reverse course on tapering the moment that the U.S. economy started to slow down again.  But even though the U.S. middle class is in horrible shape, and even though there are lots of signs that we are heading into another recession, the Fed has continued tapering.

Of course it is important to note that the Fed is still absolutely flooding the financial system with money even after the announcement of more tapering on Wednesday.  When you are talking about $55,000,000,000 a month, you are talking about a massive amount of money.  So the Fed is not exactly being hawkish.

JP MORGAN SELLS COMMODITIES UNIT TO MERCURIA FOR $3.5 BILLION

It appears that silver investors’ days of deriding Blythe Masters as the face of JP Morgan’s alleged gold & silver manipulation may be over, as Jamie Dimon has formerly announced the sale of JPM’s commodities division to Switzlerland’s Mercuria for $3.5 billion.  

The Morgue will however reportedly continue its global commercial gold vaulting business, as well as financial products (derivatives) and will continue to “make markets“. 
Perhaps Blythe should re-apply for a position at the CFTC?

JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM) announced today that it has reached a definitive agreement to sell its physical commodities business to Mercuria Energy Group Limited, a global energy and commodities trading company, for $3.5 billion. The all cash transaction is expected to close in the third quarter of 2014, subject to regulatory approvals.

Copper Plunges To Fresh 5-Year Low

As we explained in great detail yesterday, the selling in commodities is far from over. The extent of China’s commodity-backed-financing is only now beginning to be understood and forced sales (along with the vicious circle of collapsing collateral values and increasingly tightening credit) are hard to stop for a government set of reform. Copper prices were heavy overnight in Asia but this morning has seen futures plunge on heavy volume below $289 – the lowest since July 2009– breaking key support levels. For the same reasoning, zinc and aluminum are under pressure, as is steel rebar and gold.

Russian troops backed by unarmed volunteers stormed Ukraine’s naval headquarters in the Crimean port of Sevastopol on Wednesday and raised the Russian flag, as Moscow tightened its control of the Black Sea peninsula.

The dramatic seizure came as Russia and the West dug in for a long confrontation over Moscow’s annexation of Crimea, with the United States and Europe groping for ways to increase pressure on a defiant Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Russian lawmakers raced to ratify a treaty making the Ukrainian region part of Russia by the end of the week, despite threats of further sanctions from Washington and Brussels.

The Russian military moved swiftly to neutralize any threat of armed resistance in Crimea.

“This morning they stormed the compound. They cut the gates open, but I heard no shooting,” said Oleksander Balanyuk, a captain in the navy, walking out of the compound in his uniform and carrying his belongings.

We can not thank all of you enough for your support in the one plus year we spent fighting this injustice. Keith and I are humbled by all of your thoughtful donations and encouraging words. When I started this page Keith was sitting in jail with no attorney nor public defender.

Of all the inmates he was the only one in his area who had a pin that did not work so that he could make phone calls. I had no resources of my own to help him and I cried every day because I mostly did not know what to do. All I had was this page and the people that reached out to me once his story got out. It is because of every last one of you who donated to this fund that Keith was able to afford the best attorney Lou Nappen of Evan Nappen and Associates, afford the erroneous bail charges that were against him once the $75,000 bail was dropped, moving out of New Jersey to place where he was safe once he got out, and afforded him the ability to get back on his feet while he fought this case.

ATF Firearms Form Processing Now Taking Even More Time

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Enforcement Programs and Services (EPS) Division has posted a new chart for its form processing times and the latest information is not good.

NFA Forms 1 and 4 are now taking 10 months to process. NSSF is working to get additional resources committed to EPS through the Congressional appropriations process.

NSSF Senior Vice President and General Counsel Lawrence G. Keane issued the following statement:

“The delays and lack of timely customer service, which grows worse every month, is significantly interfering with the ability of members of our industry to engage in the lawful commerce and grow their businesses and create more good paying jobs here in America. It also infringes on the ability of law abiding citizens to exercise their Second Amendment rights in a timely manner, and a right delayed is a right denied.”

Obama’s Final Four from “The Hill”

President Obama is picking two No. 1 seeds, as well as a pair of No. 4 seeds to advance to the Final Four in this year’s men’s college basketball championship tournament, he told ESPN.

The president’s final four includes defending champion Louisville, tournament favorite Florida, as well as top seed Arizona and perennial contender Michigan State.

The network has not yet revealed who the president predicted would win the tournament, or whether the normally conservative prognosticator-in-chief had broken with his chalk-heavy tendencies and picked some early-round upsets. The president’s full bracket will be revealed in an interview set to air Wednesday morning.

I do not know which is worse: that The Hill published this story or that he will be using this opportunity to promote “Obamacare”:

The White House is planning to use the president’s bracket to promote enrollment on the ObamaCare exchanges before the deadline at the end of the month. According to a White House official, the bracket will be featured on a White House webpage that also features the “16 Sweetest Reasons to Get Covered” squaring off in a tournament-style bracket.

As we face World War III, what kind of pResident has time for an ESPN interview but cannot attend security briefings? Who is really in control of the country?

Government Agency: If 9 Substations Are Destroyed, The Power Grid Could Be Down For 18 Months

What would you do if the Internet or the power grid went down for over a year?  Our key infrastructure, including the Internet and the power grid, is far more vulnerable than most people would dare to imagine.  These days, most people simply take for granted that the lights will always be on and that the Internet will always function properly.  But what if all that changed someday in the blink of an eye?  According to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s latest report, all it would take to plunge the entire nation into darkness for more than a year would be to knock out a transformer manufacturer and just 9 of our 55,000 electrical substations on a really hot summer day.  The reality of the matter is that our power grid is in desperate need of updating, and there is very little or no physical security at most of these substations.  If terrorists, or saboteurs, or special operations forces wanted to take down our power grid, it would not be very difficult.  And as you will read about later in this article, the Internet is extremely vulnerable as well.

“Russia is playing a very good game of Chess and there’s every reason to believe that Russia has thought this out in advance,” said Vitaly Chernetsky, a Ukraine expert at the University of Kansas.It’s up to the rest of the world to decide what will be needed to stop Putin’s momentum, he said.

Putin on Tuesday vowed not to bow to the international community, saying,”in our hearts we know Crimea has always been an inalienable part of Russia.”
