1%: Average Annual Economic Growth Under Obama

President Obama, Vice President Biden and House Speaker John Boehner at the State of the Union Address

President Obama, Vice President Biden and House Speaker John Boehner at the State of the Union Address

In the 21st century, during the presidencies of George W. Bush and Barack Obama, the U.S. economy has not shown the ability to grow that it did in the last two decades of the 20th century, according to data released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis.

In fact, real average annual economic growth has been nearly cut in half so far this century compared to the last two decades of the last century; and specifically during President Obama’s time in office it has dropped to an average of just over 1 percent.

In the decade from 1981 to 1990, according to the BEA, average annual growth in real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was 3.36 percent. In the decade from 1991 to 2000, average annual growth in real GDP was 3.45 percent. In the twenty years from 1981 to 2000, average annual growth in real GDP was 3.405 percent.

By contrast, in the decade from 2001 to 2010, average annual growth in real GDP was only 1.67 percent, and, so far, in the 21st century (from 2001 through 2012), average annual growth in real GDP has been only 1.775 percent.

The U.S. Military Has Awarded Contracts to Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan

I suppose it just wasn’t enough that our allies, “the rebels” in Syria, have significant Al-Qaeda elements to them. No, we are the USA! USA! Best country ever. Defender of human rights. City on a hill. We must do far more than that. So we did.

This story below from Bloomberg, highlights a 236-page report by the U.S. Army Suspension and Debarment Office, which shows that military contracts have been granted to the Taliban and Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan. Yep, this is exactly what happens when an empire gets too big, too corrupt, and ends up in the hands of a bunch of sociopaths. From Bloomberg:

Supporters of the Taliban and al-Qaeda in Afghanistan have been getting U.S. military contracts, and American officials are citing “due process rights” as a reason not to cancel the agreements, according to an independent agency monitoring spending.

“I am deeply troubled that the U.S. military can pursue, attack, and even kill terrorists and their supporters, but that some in the U.S. government believe we cannot prevent these same people from receiving a government contract,” Sopko said.

How Democrats can reclaim North Carolina government

Moral Mondays are turning public opinion against Republicans.

Moral Mondays are turning public opinion against Republicans.

I’m not going to kid you. If your goal is to win our state back from the reckless Republicans who run it now, there’s no easy path. But in response to the No. 1 question people ask me, the answer is yes. There is a path. And it begins in Wake County.

But first, let’s understand the challenge.

Awhile back, I said to a dour Democrat that it seemed likely the Republicans would remain in power in North Carolina for 10 years because of how they gerrymandered the election districts. But the Democrats will have an opening after the 2020 census, assuming that a Democrat is elected governor in 2020.

More like 20 or 30 years, the dour Democrat replied. Remember, he said, the governor has no veto power over redistricting bills. The Republicans will keep winning the General Assembly because they draw the districts. And they’ll keep drawing the districts—in 2020 and in 2030—because they keep winning.

True. After they won in 2010, the Republicans drew districts that allowed them, despite winning barely half the votes in the 2012 elections, to gain a 33-17 majority in the Senate and 77-43 in the House.

There is no shortcut to reclaim the state via the election of a Democratic or independent governor, though winning the governor’s office in 2016 will be critical. About that, the dour Democrat was correct. But after combing through the 2012 results, I think he was wrong about the next 10 years.

The challenge for the Democrats is to win control of the Senate or House by 2020, allowing them to negotiate the next redistricting with the Republicans. Ideally, the Republicans will lose both houses … or stop being radical reactionaries.

Here’s the way.

NO MORE ‘STEALTH’ MODE: PROGRESSIVE GROUP PLANS TO INFILTRATE GOP TOWN HALLS IN AUGUST

Some pro-Democratic groups plan to make trouble for select Republicans at their town halls during the coming August recess, the Huffington Post reports.

Americans United for Change is launching the Accountable Congress web site to notify progressive activists when Republicans hold events in their area, according to Salon.

The site includes progressive talking points on issues such as immigration, climate change, and gun violence, as well as possible questions to ask Republican lawmakers.

Americans United for Change plans to share noteworthy responses and collect and share information about what Republicans are doing and saying, the Huffington Post says.

“This is a new approach. The theory in the past has been to be stealth about the effort to confront members at town halls — but sometimes it’s been too stealth, and we haven’t generated enough activity,” said Brad Woodhouse, president of Americans United for Change. “Since everyone knows that both sides are doing this, we’re going to be public-facing about it.”

Fed Humiliated With Red Close Despite Dovish FOMC And GDP Revision

A very volatile day in stocks ended with a violent high volume dump from post-FOMC highs on heavy MoC selling pressure that left the S&P and Dow with red closes. S&P futures still managed their best month since Oct 2011 – though unable yet again to capture the 1,700 flag. The size and scale of the ‘rotation’ into the close (and strength in bonds) leaves us wondering who is buying and who is selling. For some context, post-FOMC, S&P -4pts, 10Y -8bps, Gold +$10, USD -0.15%; so it seems bonds benefited the most and stocks seem to be crying out for moar. The Dow has now closed red for 3 days-in-a-row – the worst streak in seven weeks.

S&P 500 futures had their best month in 21 months…

but the Dow has closed red three days in a row now… the worst streak in 7 weeks…

NH Police View Peaceful Libertarian And Occupy Activists As Terrorists

Police in Concord, New Hampshire have applied for a grant to acquire a $258,000 armored vehicle from the DHS to combat domestic terrorism.

According to their application, they cited “active threats” from domestic “terror” groups like Free State Project and Occupy New Hampshire as the primary reason for requiring this military equipment.

New Hampshire’s Union Leader newspaper reports:

In its grant application to DHS, the police department said New Hampshire’s experience with terrorism “slants primarily towards the domestic type,” and said “the threat is real and here.”

“Groups such as the Sovereign Citizens, Free Staters and Occupy New Hampshire are active and present daily challenges,” the application stated. In addition to organized groups, it cited “several homegrown clusters that are anti-government and pose problems for law enforcement agencies.”

Notably, these domestic groups were the only specific parties named as “terrorist” threats in the grant request.

44 Facts About The Death Of The Middle Class That Every American Should Know

44

What is America going to look like when the middle class is dead?  Once upon a time, the United States has the largest and most vibrant middle class in the history of the world.  When I was growing up, it seemed like almost everyone was “middle class” and it was very rare to hear of someone that was out of work.  Of course life wasn’t perfect, but most families owned a home, most families had more than one vehicle, and most families could afford nice vacations and save for retirement at the same time.  Sadly, things have dramatically changed in America since that time.  There just aren’t as many “middle class jobs” as there used to be.  In fact, just six years ago there were about six million more full-time jobs in our economy than there are right now.  Those jobs are being replaced by part-time jobs and temp jobs.  The number one employer in America today is Wal-Mart and the number two employer in America today is a temp agency (Kelly Services).  But you can’t support a family on those kinds of jobs.  We live at a time when incomes are going down but the cost of living just keeps going up.  As a result, the middle class in America is being absolutely shredded and the ranks of the poor are steadily growing.  The following are 44 facts about the death of the middle class that every American should know…

1. According to one recent survey, “four out of five U.S. adults struggle with joblessness, near poverty or reliance on welfare for at least parts of their lives”.

2. The growth rate of real disposable personal income is the lowest that it has been in decades.

3. Median household income (adjusted for inflation) has fallen by 7.8 percent since the year 2000.

4. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the middle class is taking home a smaller share of the overall income pie than has ever been recorded before.

5. The home ownership rate in the United States is the lowest that it has been in 18 years.
