GRNC CANDIDATE EVALUATIONS vs. NRA RATINGS

Every election year, we get some variation of the same questions:

  1. “Why did you give Joe Blow a zero star evaluation? He is a [Hunter], [Great Guy], [Libertarian].” The answer is that if a candidate lacks a voting record and refuses to return GRNC’s candidate survey, the rules of the “Remember in November” candidate evaluation system assume he is hiding his position. If he lacks a voting record and refuses the survey, he gets a “0.”
  2. “Why didn’t you give Libertarian presidential candidate Gary Johnson 4 stars?” The answer is that Johnson didn’t return the survey and lacks a voting record on gun issues. Libertarians do not get a pass just for being Libertarians. Arbitrarily awarding them 4 stars (****) would be construed not as voter education, but as candidate advocacy, potentially running afoul of elections laws and IRS regulations on non-profit organizations.
  3. “The NRA gave Senator Bombast an A+ and endorsement, but GRNC only gave him two stars (**). Why?” Since we could be construed as less than objective, let’s look at what the “Beaufort Observer” recently said as it published GRNC candidate evaluations:
“We are not publishing the NRA ratings. We investigated their candidate evaluation process during the primary and found it to be very unreliable. Continue reading

AUSTRALIAN GOLD SALES TO CHINA SOAR 900%

GOLD has soared past coal as Australia’s second most valuable physical export to China, with sales up a whopping 900 per cent for the first eight months of the year, bringing in $4.1 billion.

Chinese buyers are hoarding the precious metal amid a slowing economy, property-buying restrictions and uncertain financial markets as its central bank increases its holdings.

The unprecedented jump in gold sales, along with continued acceleration of export revenues for other commodities led by coal — up 80 per cent to $4bn — caused total exports to China to rise by 10.7 per cent for the year to August, according to Australian Bureau of Statistics figures.

Shipments of Australia’s biggest export, iron ore, were up 20 per cent for the same period but the total value of $26.9bn was down 5 per cent compared to last year, because of the mid-year price slump.

China’s foreign currency reserves of gold are low and its move to build them up will provide an important base demand for gold, analysts said.

WINNING?

Who exactly is winning, and why does it matter?  It certainly doesn’t if all we are being given is a false sense of choice…  There will be no winner of this election, and certainly the American people will again be the losers in a completely rigged game of 2-card Monte.  Yeah, they didn’t even let us play with 3 cards…

The American people will not start winning until we start fighting – and that means withdrawing our sanction and participation from this farce of a government.  The longer we wait, the worse the “late fees” will become.

Australian Stocks Suffer HFT Stop-Run Glitch At Open

We are now entirely used to the daily mini-flashes in US equities as algos lose their stabilizer and run one way or another. Recently we noted the same algos-gone-wild had hit the India stock exchange. Tonight, the HFT-bug has moved to Australia, where the open – which just happens to be option expiration – saws a number of major equities (including several of the banks – e.g. ANZ and CBA) get smashed instantaneously higher (by 5-7%) at the open – only to plummet back to normalcy soon after. The culprit – it would appear to us – is a market-clearing wipe-out of all resting stops above the multi-year highs that the stocks were at the edge of. Regulators are ‘investigating’ though their first comment was “it is certainly nothing to do with the trading system.” As the Sydney Morning Herald notes a market participant: “Either that or an algorithm has gone haywire, a mistake has been made, or these trades are deliberate.’ Either way, do we have an orderly market?”

Iran Launches Submarine And Destroyer Into Gulf During US Naval Exercises

This week the US, UK, France, and a few Middle Eastern countries are conducting naval exercises in the Gulf of Persia to practice clearing mines that Iran, or other groups may place around the Straits of Hormuz in an attempt to disrupt the movement of oil tankers in the region.

Mohammed Ali Jafari, the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, said that the “exercise is a defensive exercise and we don’t perceive any threats from it. We are not conducting exercises in response.”

Yet this is not the impression that is given.

Just yesterday, according to the official IRNA news agency, upon the direct orders of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei Iran launched a refitted Tareq-901 submarine and a Sahand destroyer into the Gulf from the port of Bandar Abbas.

Feds Arrest Man Plotting Attack On New York Fed

Update: we now have the suspect’s name: Quazi Mohammad Rezwanul Ahsan Nafis, who in addition to Plan A had Plan B: “If Nafis felt his attack was about to be thwarted by cops, he would invoke the back-up plan, which involved a suicide bombing operation”

From CNN

Quazi Mohammad Rezwanul Ahsan Nafis, 21, was arrested for allegedly attempting to detonate what he thought was a 1,000-pound bomb at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York in Manhattan, the Department of Justice and a U.S. attorney’s office said in a press release.* * *

We now have some more detail about the plot to blow up the reserve bank from a press release that breaks down the criminal complaint filed against Quazi Mohammad Rezwanul Ahsan Nafis:

The Bangladeshi national allegedly came to the United States in January to carry out a terror attack on U.S. soil and said he had overseas connections to al-Qaeda. As he attempted to recruit others to join his cell, he tried to recruit someone who turned out to be an FBI source, the criminal complaint says.

Nafis initially had a few targets in mind, according to the complaint, including  “a high-ranking U.S. official and the New York Stock Exchange.” In the end, Nafis settled on the New York Federal Reserve Bank, federal officials said.

“In a written statement intended to claim responsibility for the terrorist bombing of the Federal Reserve Bank on behalf of al-Qaeda, Nafis wrote that he wanted to ‘destroy America’ and that he believed the most efficient way to accomplish this goal was to target America’s economy,” the Justice Department press release said. “In this statement, Nafis also included quotations from ‘our beloved Sheikh Osama bin Laden’ to justify the fact that Nafis expected that the attack would involve the killing of women and children.”

The “explosives that he allegedly sought and attempted to use had been rendered inoperable by law enforcement and posed no threat to the public,” according to a statement from U.S. Attorney Loretta E. Lynch.

The plot came to light as an FBI undercover agent posed as an al-Qaeda facilitator, federal authorities say.

Russian S-400s relocated near Turkey. Hizballah shifts units, rockets into Syria

Hizballah missile on the move into Syria

Hizballah missile on the move into Syria

Hizballah has begun depleting line of rockets and fighting units it has facing Israel from the Litani River of South Lebanon and moving them to the Syrian front line at Homs to strengthen Assad’s forces, DEBKAfile’s military sources reveal. Hizballah’s forward line against Israel is still in place among the southernmost Shiite villages, but a part of their artillery back-up is gone and, for the first time, Hizballah’s ground-to-ground rockets are moving in an eastward direction into Syria. This is a striking reversal of the usual direction taken by Hizballah hardware which, for years, headed from east to west to reach Lebanon from Iran and Syria.

This step attests to the scope, fury and determination of the Syrian army’s current land and air offensive against the rebels.

It also means that Hizballah has no fear of Israeli retaliation for the infiltration of an Iranian stealth drone from Lebanon into its air space on Saturday, Oct. 6 – even after HIzballah leader Hassan Nasrallah promised more unmanned interlopers would intrude on Israel’s skies.

The Assad regime has found succor in another, more powerful quarter: Moscow has announced the deployment starting Wednesday, Oct. 17, of advanced S-400 interceptor missile batteries in Russia’s southern military region opposite Turkey.

Russian military spokesman Col. Igor Gorbul described those missiles as “targeting Turkey” against its involvement in NATO’s missile shield program. He emphasized that the S-400s are capable of destroying all types of airplanes, as well as ultra-stratospheric and ballistic missiles.

Largest joint US-Israel missile defense drill to kick off

US military forces have begun arriving in Israel to take part in the largest joint missile defense exercise of its kind, which will begin next week.

One thousand American soldiers will arrive on Israeli territory, and a further 2,000 US troops in Europe and the United States will take part via remote defense computing systems. An equal number of Israeli soldiers will be involved.

During the drill, named Austere Challenge 12, Israeli air defense systems, such as the Iron Dome anti-rocket shield and Arrow 2 anti-ballistic missile batteries, will be deployed, as well as US and Israeli Patriot batteries. American naval ships carrying the Aegis combat system, which can intercept missiles, will take part, and at least one US Navy ship will dock at Haifa.

The IDF and the US military’s European Command will set up missile defense batteries across Israel. Most of the drill will involve computer simulations of incoming rockets, though in the last stage, a Patriot will be fired at a mock enemy projectile.

“Anyone can take away any message they want from this,” said the IDF’s Brig-Gen. Nitzan Nuriel, who is heading the Israeli side of the exercise. “The fact that we are working together is a strong message by itself,” he added.

Three Scenarios For Gold

Even though we have presented comparable scenarios looking at the coverage of the US money base in gold terms previously, aka “gold coverage” ratio, including once from Dylan Grice, and once from David Rosenberg, now that we have drifted into a new, previously unchartered and very much open-ended liquidity tsunami, it is time to revisit the topic. Luckily, Guggenheim’s Scott Minerd has done just that. Not only that, but he presents three distinct gold pricing scenario, attempting to forecast a low, medium and high price range for the yellow metal.

To wit: “The U.S. gold coverage ratio, which measures the amount of gold on deposit at the Federal Reserve against the total money supply, is currently at an all-time low of 17%. This ratio tends to move dramatically and falls during periods of disinflation or relative price stability. The historical average for the gold coverage ratio is roughly 40%, meaning that the current price of gold would have to more than double to reach the average. The gold coverage ratio has risen above 100% twice during the twentieth century. Were this to happen today, the value of an ounce of gold would exceed $12,000.”
