(Reuters) – A Pakistani minister offered $100,000 on Saturday to anyone who kills the maker of an online video which insults Islam, as sporadic protests rumbled on across parts of the Muslim world.

“I announce today that this blasphemer, this sinner who has spoken nonsense about the holy Prophet, anyone who murders him, I will reward him with $100,000,” Railways Minister Ghulam Ahmad Bilour told a news conference, to applause.

“I invite the Taliban brothers and the al Qaeda brothers to join me in this blessed mission.”

A spokesman for Pakistan’s prime minister said the government disassociated itself from the minister’s statement.

While many Muslim countries saw mostly peaceful protests on Friday, fifteen people were killed in Pakistan during demonstrations over the video.

In my 76th year, the events of my life appear to me, from time to time, as a
series of vignettes. Some were significant; most were trivial.

War is the seminal event in the life of everyone that has endured it. Though I
fought in Korea and the Dominican Republic and was wounded there, Vietnam was my
war.

Now 42 years have passed and, thankfully, I rarely think of those days in
Cambodia, Laos, and the panhandle of North Vietnam where small teams of
Americans and Montagnards fought much larger elements of the North Vietnamese
Army. Instead I see vignettes: some exotic, some mundane:

*The smell of Nuoc Mam.
*The heat, dust, and humidity.
*The blue exhaust of cycles clogging the streets.
*Elephants moving silently through the tall grass.
*Hard eyes behind the servile smiles of the villagers.
*Standing on a mountain in Laos and hearing a tiger roar.
*A young girl squeezing my hand as my medic delivered her baby.
*The flowing Ao Dais of the young women biking down Tran Hung Dao.
*My two years as Casualty Notification Officer in North Carolina, Virginia, and
Maryland.

It was late 1967. I had just returned after 18 months in Vietnam. Casualties
were increasing. I moved my family from Indianapolis to Norfolk, rented a house,
enrolled my children in their fifth or sixth new school, and bought a second
car.

French Central Bank password was 123456

A French citizen has unintentionally breached the security of the French central bank (Banque de France) over the phone and was freed by French authorities after being accused of “hacking” the central bank’s and triggering a 48-hours shut down of that particular computer system which handles the consumer indebtedness files (basically people who are flagged as having a very bad credit history).

The man was trying to go around the paid telephone consumer support system and got from Internet forums what he thought was a direct-line to the central bank employees (yes, in France, you have to pay for most forms of telephone support). When asked for a code by an automated system, he entered 123456 and it worked – he had just breached the central bank’s security.

It gets better: according to the man’s attorney, 654321 would have worked as well. It looks like the French central bank password is using a checksum based on additions or other very simple methods… (lol, scary). Maybe it’s time to “beef-up” security…

On Santelli’s Queasiness About Bernanke’s Quantitative-Easiness

Between CNBC’s Rick Santelli and PIMCO’s Mohammed El-Erian, this brief clip succinctly sums up the ‘less than ideal’ reality of Bernanke’s all-in bet and how the world is trying to ‘trade’ it. Santelli analogizes: “Visualize the biggest fire hose in the world, 20 miles away from a little Geranium plant? Now this hose is going and going and going, and ultimately, that Geranium plant gets a little bit of water but everything around it and leading up to it for miles around is just underwater. That’s QE, in my opinion.” To which El-Erian retorts: “at what point do you tell investors stop focusing on the benefits and make the collateral damage the investment theme?” It seems, given gold’s outperformance, that this is exactly what is occurring as the hose-pipe’s flood spills out everywhere.

The discussion ensues, with Santelli noting that the Fed-heads (especially Charles Evans) have admitted QE is not ‘ideal’ but ‘We’ve got to do something!!”

If Turkey Goes…

If Turkey goes fully under islamic control, all heck will break loose in short order, and everyone should be aware of how close we are to that possibility –

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — A Turkish court on Friday convicted 330 military officers, including the former air force and navy chiefs, of plotting to overthrow the Islamic-based government in 2003, state television reported, in a case that has helped curtail the military’s hold on politics.

A panel of three judges at the court on Istanbul’s outskirts initially sentenced former air force chief Ibrahim Firtina, former navy chief Ozden Ornek and former army commander Cetin Dogan to life imprisonment but later reduced the sentence to a 20-year jail term, TRT reported. The three were accused of masterminding the plot.

The court also convicted 327 other active or retired officers for involvement in the conspiracy, sentencing some to as much as 18 years in prison. Thirty-four were acquitted while the case against one was postponed for health reasons.

The officers were expected to appeal the verdict.

The trial of the high-ranking officers — unconceivable a decade ago — has helped significantly to tip the balance of power in Turkey in favor of civilian authorities.

Turkey’s generals have staged three coups since the 1960s and forced an Islamist government to quit in 1997. But Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s government has grown ever more confident with each of its three electoral successes since 2002 and has been drawing reins on the powers of the armed forces which have long seen themselves as the guardians of Turkey’s secular traditions.

Last week a cattle industry colleague of mine called to relate his afternoon’s activity. He was driving with his four children, aged 9 to 1, when the following conversation took place in the car:4 year old girl: Can two girls get married?

6 year old boy: NO, SILLY! Two girls can’t get married. It has to be one boy and one girl.

9 year old girl: Nuh-uh. I saw on TV where two girls got married.

This is what it finally took for this man, this husband, this father, this guardian and protector, to FINALLY understand the full horror of what is being done to his children. This is what it took – having the sword of his 9 year old’s parroting of Marxist-Sodomite propaganda pierce his soul. He could pretend that he had it under control so long as it was only the people on TV saying it. He could lie to himself and tell himself that “it is all going over their heads” and “we’re a good Christian family, and we are raising our children in a Godly home in rural America,” … until he heard the Sodomite filth come spewing out of the mouth of his firstborn child, contaminating two of his other children in the process.

This horror was what was required for the Holy Spirit to finally get through. And this is a big lesson: if you need to get your heart torn out of your chest and stomped all over in order for you to comprehend some essential truth, God will permit that to happen. Don’t you doubt that for one second.

The Next Panic

Europe’s crisis will be followed by a more devastating one, likely beginning in Japan.

This summer, many government officials and private investors finally seemed to realize that the crisis in the euro zone was not some passing aberration, but rather a result of deep-­seated political, economic, and financial problems that will take many years to resolve. The on-again, off-again euro turmoil has already proved immensely damaging to nearly all Europeans, and its negative impact is now being felt around the world. Most likely there is worse to come—and soon.

But the economic disasters of our time—which involve big banks in rich countries, call into question the viability of government debt, and seriously threaten the reach of even the most self-confident nations—will not end with the euro debacle. The euro zone is well down the path to severe crisis, but other industrialized democracies are hot on its heels. Do not let the euro zone’s troubles distract you from the bigger picture: we are all in a mess.

Who could be next in line for a gut-wrenching loss of confidence in its growth prospects, its sovereign debt, and its banking system? Think about Japan.
