Newt Gingrich on D.C. Weather: ‘Mild Taste of What an EMP (Electromagnetic Pulse) Attack Would Do’

Newt Gingrich issued a warning, based on the destructive storms that hit the Washington, D.C. area over the weekend, on Twitter:

Friend and coauthor bill forstchen notes washington-baltimore blackout mild taste of what an emp (electromagnetic pulse) attack would do

— Newt Gingrich (@newtgingrich) July 2, 2012

And, later, the former Republican presidential candidate added:

Forstchen’s novel “one second after” is an amazingly vivid story ofsmall town’s struggles after all electricity has been destroyed by emp

— Newt Gingrich (@newtgingrich) July 2, 2012

“Crews are working 24/7 to restore power to roughly 650,000 homes and businesses with electricity three days after a rare derecho storm blew through the area, downing trees and electric lines,” WTOP reports. “The number of outages Monday morning has been climbing, rather than declining.”

Morgan Stanley Pushed S&P To Boost Ratings, Investors Say

Morgan Stanley (MS) successfully pressured Standard & Poor’s and Moody’s Investors Service Inc. to give erroneous investment-grade ratings in 2006 to $23 billion worth of notes backed by subprime mortgages, investors claimed in a lawsuit, citing documents unsealed in federal court.

Executives at the ratings firms failed to warn investors about the risks associated with subprime-backed notes that were issued by a unit of London-based hedge fund Cheyne Capital Management Ltd. because they wanted to reap financial rewards from doing business with Morgan Stanley, the sixth-largest U.S. bank by assets and designer of the notes, the investors allege, citing the material made public today in Manhattan.

The unsealing of the internal documents from Moody’s and Standard & Poor’s came in one of the largest ratings lawsuits to emerge from the 2008 financial crisis. The lawsuit was filed in 2008 by Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank, based in the United Arab Emirates, and Washington’s King County, which includes Seattle.

The lawsuit focuses on notes issued by Cheyne Finance Plc, a so-called structured-investment vehicle that collapsed in 2007. SIVs issued short-term debt to fund purchases of higher- yielding long-term notes and failed when credit dried up amid the financial crisis, sparked by investments in mortgage-backed securities.

Manufacturing shrinks, first time in nearly three years

(Reuters) – Manufacturing shrank in June for the first time in nearly three years as new orders plummeted, according to one measure of the sector that provided a stark sign of the economic recovery’s slowdown.

The Institute for Supply Management said on Monday its index of national factory activity fell to 49.7 from 53.5 the month before, missing expectations of 52.0, according to a Reuters poll of economists, and below even the lowest forecast.

It was the first time since July 2009 that the index has fallen below the 50 mark that separates expansion from contraction. That was shortly after the U.S. economy emerged from recession.

Manufacturing has been one of the drivers of the U.S. economic recovery, which now appears to be losing momentum over fears about the euro zone’s debt crisis, a slowdown in China and uncertainty over domestic fiscal policy.

‘God Particle’ rumours strengthened by Tevatron data

Hopes that Cern scientists have found the “God Particle” were strengthened yesterday when rival American researchers announced their strongest evidence yet of its existence.

American scientists have revealed their strongest evidence yet of the

Results from the US Tevatron, a smaller cousin of Cern’s Large Hadron Collider, “strongly point” towards the existence of a Higgs Boson, scientists said.

Telltale signals which could indicate the Higgs were identified within the same search region where the LHC identified promising “hints” of the particle last December.

Although the Tevatron’s results are nowhere near strong enough to qualify as a discovery, they will fuel growing speculation that LHC scientists are set to make a conclusive announcement on the particle’s existence on Wednesday.

Because the Tevatron and LHC use very different methods of searching for the Higgs Boson, the fact that their signals match up greatly reduces the chance that either could have happened by chance.

Prof Dan Tovey, Professor of Particle Physics at the University of Sheffield, said: “These intriguing hints from the Tevatron appear to support the results from the LHC shown at CERN in December.

The ‘Green’ Premium: 620%

As the squeeze-fest from Friday’s oil-spike wears off a little, it is perhaps worth noting just how astronomically insane the world gets when the terrible triumvirate of ‘green’ energy needs, defense spending, and government largesse come together. Why should we worry about 5c or 10c on a gallon of fuel down the local gas station when the US Navy (in all her glory) is willing to pay a staggering $26-a-gallon for ‘green’ synthetic biofuel (made we assume from the very same unicorn tears and leprechaun nipples that funded the ESM).

As Reuters reports, the ‘Great Green Fleet’ will be the first carrier strike group powered largely by alternative fuels; as the Pentagon hopes it can prove the Navy looks just as impressive burning fuel squeezed from seeds, algae, and chicken fat (we did not make this up). The story gets better as it appears back in 2009, the Navy paid Solazyme (whose strategic advisors included TJ Gaulthier who served on Obama’s White House Transition team) $8.5mm for 20,055 gallons on algae-based biofuel – a snip at just $424-a-gallon.

While this is of course stirring all kinds of Republican rebuttal, Navy secretary Ray Mabus believes it vital to diversify as the Navy has been at the forefront of energy innovation for over 100 years (from sail, to coal, to oil, and then to nuclear from the 1850s to 1950s). Indeed, “Of course it costs more,” he told the climate conference. “It’s a new technology. If we didn’t pay a little bit more for new technologies, we’d still be using typewriters instead of computers.” Easy when it’s other people’s money eh?

Bond Market Backs Obama With Record Demand For New Debt

Investors are plowing cash into new U.S. Treasuries at a record pace, making economic growth rather than budget austerity a key issue as President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney face off in November’s presidential election.

Bidders offered $3.16 for each dollar of the $1.075 trillion of notes and bonds auctioned by the Treasury Department this year as yields reached all-time lows, above the previous high of $3.04 in all of 2011, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The so-called bid-to-cover ratio was 2.26 from 1998 to 2001 when the nation ran budget surpluses.

Even as Romney and fellow Republicans assail Obama for presiding over the increase of U.S. publicly-owned debt to $10.5 trillion from $5.75 trillion in 2009 amid the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression, the bond market is showing growing investor confidence in the safety of dollar assets.

“The perceived stability of the U.S. financial system, where you have an active and aggressive Federal Reserve, and a broad $15 trillion-plus economy means the U.S. is going to continue to be regarded as a deep, liquid, strong area to invest in,” Rick Rieder, chief investment officer of fundamental fixed income at New York-based Blackrock Inc., which manages $3.68 trillion, said in a June 29 telephone interview. “Rates are going to stay low for a long time.”

In Mexico vote, Conservatives Lose

People cast their votes in Mexico City July 1, 2012. Mexicans began voting for a new president on Sunday with the opposition party that dominated the country for most of the past century poised for a comeback after the ruling conservatives failed to provide strong growth or halt a brutal drugs war. REUTERS-Ginnette Riquelme

Mexico’s old rulers were on track for a comeback as voters chose a new president on Sunday, after a grisly war with drug cartels and a sluggish economy wore down the ruling conservatives.

Twelve years after the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) lost power, opinion polls showed its candidate, Enrique Pena Nieto, heading into the vote with a double-digit lead over his opponents.

A youthful-looking former governor of the State of Mexico, Pena Nieto promises reforms to improve the country’s tax take, loosen the job market and open the state-owned oil firm Pemex to more foreign investment, citing Brazil’s Petrobras as a model.

EU oil embargo on Iran takes effect. Gulf braced for backlash, Hormuz closure

Repaired Saudi-Iraq pipeline bypasses HormuzThe European oil embargo taking effect Sunday, July 1 blocks the sale to European Union members of 1 million, or one third, of Iran’s daily output of 3.3 million barrels a day. EU insurance firms, the biggest in the world, henceforth withhold cover from governments and firms operating tankers which carry Iranian oil.

This sanction was threatened in January if diplomatic negotiations in the interim failed to persuade Iran, the world’s fourth largest oil producer, to halt work on developing a nuclear weapon.

Three rounds of talks by six world powers (US, Russia, UK, France, China and Germany) with Iran have since ended in impasse. A fourth at a technical level is scheduled for Tuesday, July 3, in Istanbul. Braced against potential reprisals from Tehran, Saud Arabia and fellow Gulf nations have placed their armies on alert. Completing a deployment begun last Thursday for possible intervention in Syria, Saudi Arabia has massed units on its borders with Jordan, Iraq and Kuwait. The United Arab Emirates sea, air and special forces are on a state of readiness, as are US Fifth Fleet vessels in Gulf waters. While not anticipating full-scale war, they are acutely apprehensive of possible Iranian strikes against Gulf oil fields, export terminals, pipelines or tankers either by covert Al Qods Brigades squads or local Shiite saboteurs. Tehran has repeatedly threatened to treat an oil embargo as an act of war and close the strategic Strait of Hormuz to Gulf shipping in response.

Two days before the oil embargo went into effect, Saudi Arabia and the UAE activated two extra oil pipelines bypassing Hormuz and providing alternative routes for their oil to continue to flow to export markets if the Straits are blocked. The Saudis repaired and enlarged the disused “Iraq Pipeline in Saudi Arabia” –IPS, a 25-year old pipe running 750 kilometers from eastern Saudi oil fields to the Yanbu refineries and export terminal complex on the Red Sea. Riyadh is keeping its volume a trade secret. However international oil experts estimate its capacity at around one-fifth of the Saudi production of around 9.5 million bpd.

77% of JP Morgan’s Net Income Comes from Government Subsidies

JP Morgan receives a government subsidy worth about $14 billion a year, according to research published by the International Monetary Fundand our own analysis of bank balance sheets. The money helps the bank pay big salaries and bonuses. More important, it distorts markets, fueling crises such as the recent subprime-lending disaster and the sovereign-debt debacle that is now threatening to destroy the euro and sink the global economy.

***

With each new banking crisis, the value of the implicit subsidy grows. In a recent paper, two economists — Kenichi Ueda of the IMF and Beatrice Weder Di Mauro of the University of Mainz — estimated that as of 2009 the expectation of government support was shaving about 0.8 percentage point off large banks’ borrowing costs. That’s up from 0.6 percentage point in 2007, before the financial crisis prompted a global round of bank bailouts.

To estimate the dollar value of the subsidy in the U.S., we multiplied it by the debt and deposits of 18 of the country’s largest banks, including JPMorgan, Bank of America Corp. and Citigroup Inc. The result: about $76 billion a year. The number is roughly equivalent to the banks’ total profits over the past 12 months, or more than the federal government spends every year on education.

JPMorgan’s share of the subsidy is $14 billion a year, or about 77 percent of its net income for the past four quarters. In other words, U.S. taxpayers helped foot the bill for the multibillion-dollar trading loss that is the focus of today’s hearing. They’ve also provided more direct support: Dimon noted in a recent conference call that the Home Affordable Refinancing Program, which allows banks to generate income by modifying government-guaranteed mortgages, made a significant contribution to JPMorgan’s earnings in the first three months of 2012.

When Dissent Failed

See additional comments on Tea Party Nation.

While the nation has been focused on the Supreme Court’s decision on healthcare, we have neglected to read the dissenting opinion by Justice Scalia on this case. Here is a portion of the dissent written by Judge Scalia concerning healthcare:

The dissent claims that we “fail to explain why the individual mandate threatens our constitutional order.”  But we have done so. It threatens that order because it gives such an expansive meaning to the Commerce Clause that all private conduct (including failure to act) becomes subject to federal control, effectively destroying the Constitution’s division of governmental powers. Thus the dissent, on the theories proposed for the validity of the Mandate, would alter the accepted constitutional relation between the individual and the National Government.

Three points for consideration:

1. The legislation threatens our constitutional order.

2. The relationship between the individual and government has been altered.

3. The “dissent”  phrasing shows that the dissenting opinion became the majority opinion at some point after the case was decided.

Perdue vetoes controversial fracking bill

Fracking

RALEIGH, N.C. — Gov. Bev Perdue announced Sunday that she has vetoed a controversial proposal to legalize fracking.

The bill, Senate Bill 820, was backed by Republican leaders in the House and Senate, who said it would give state regulators up to two years to implement rules. Lawmakers would have to approve those rules before any commercial wells could be drilled.

But environmental advocates pushed Perdue to veto the bill. They say safeguards should be put in place before fracking is legalized, not the other way around.

In a statement released Sunday afternoon, Perdue said that, although she supports fracking, the legislation moves too quickly.

“This bill does not do enough to ensure that adequate protections for our drinking water, landowners, county and municipal governments, and the health and safety of our families will be in place before fracking begins,” Perdue said.

She says she tried to work with lawmakers, but they refused to negotiate.
