For 2012, a “Litmus Test” for Legislators

I’ve read many comments about “buyers remorse” in reference to the people we elected to state and national government in 2010.

How can we really tell if a legislator or candidate for office is “fit” to serve us ?  L. Neil Smith identified a good “litmus test” in his article “Why Did It Have To Be … Guns“:

If a politician isn’t perfectly comfortable with the idea of his average constituent, any man, woman, or responsible child, walking into a hardware store and paying cash—for any rifle, shotgun, handgun, machinegun, anything—without producing ID or signing one scrap of paper, he isn’t your friend no matter what he tells you.

How many in our current herd of RINO’s in NC or DC would pass this test ?

I want to know who is buying those pistols.

It’s not that I want that authority, but I think it’s good to know we’re looking that closely at who we’re going to give a pistol permit to…

Control… permission… sounds kinda “passive-aggressive” to me.

Get Ready to Pay for the Federal Reserve’s Mistakes

The following article from the Wall Street Journal outlines a serious threat to the stability of our economy that cannot be avoided. The Federal Reserve’s policies have kept our economy and stock market artificially stimulated with POMO and low interest rates. The time to pay is now here as hyperinflation and a depression are the consequences of their actions. Raising the interest rates will increase our interest on the national debt as outlined in my earlier article. If the interest rate is raised 0.5%, the interest on our national debt will increase over $72 billion a year.

Another Brick in the Wall

The European Central Bank (ECB) has announced the possibility of an increase in their interest rate in April. This action is being taken preemptively to slow their rate of inflation. What are the consequences in the United States: 

  1. The Euro has risen 0.5% against the US dollar on this news. Further weakening of the dollar will occur based on the amount of the increase(s).
  2. Investors around the world will put their money into European bonds/accounts instead of US Treasury bonds.
  3. As investors flee US Treasury bonds, the Federal Reserve must raise the interest on our bonds in order to be competitive. This will have a direct impact on the interest that we currently are paying on our national debt.
  4. The threat of inflation is here but our government is constrained by massive debt and a supposed recovery to act responsibly. This means that the American citizen will be required to pay higher prices: inflation will become hyperinflation.

What Are We Missing to Unite Our Country?

Our country is lacking one concept that gave us the ability to govern ourselves and more importantly gave us our freedom: public virtue. In 1776 the term public virtue meant voluntarily sacrificing personal benefit for the good of society. It took two years for our country to accept a higher calling and put aside our own personal interests. Without public virtue, we cannot and do not deserve a Republic based in liberty.
