I agree about John John. He wasn’t a very good pilot. The majority of his flight time was dual instruction. For some reason he wouldn’t leave the nest. For a person of his stature and ambition, it might make sense to have a qualified pilot with him.
But he was working to get more solo time. And he was working, though poorly, to get his instrument rating. Those seem contrary to wanting to be chaperoned. It is more like he was unconfident in his piloting skills.
That fateful night he was running late. His destination was already marginal VFR, likely to go IFR (fog). His wife was rebellious to the idea of a night flight. (Her sister was surprisingly calm about it). So, this low time, seeming unconfident pilot had a lot to worry about. With ‘getthereitis’ he likely was trying to beat the weather. On a risk matrix, he was nearly off the charts. Odds heavily stacked against him. Superior skill, in short supply, would have yielded better results.
Taking off into a black hole requires special planning and intense focus. His worries (last minute decision, running late, complaining wife) compounded the stress. No one to share the workload put him right out of his comfort zone. A poor instrument student (he hadn’t got his Inst rating) flying a technically advanced aircraft in busy airspace was an accident waiting to happen. He did successfully arrive to the crash scene.
