North, South Korea exchange fire across disputed western sea border, Seoul says

South Korean Marines fired artillery shells across a disputed sea border Monday after North Korean shells from a live fire drill conducted by Pyongyang fell into the water south of the frontier, Seoul officials told the Associated Press.

There were no reports of any injuries. Residents on front-line South Korean islands spent several hours in shelters during the firing, and officials temporarily halted ferry service linking the islands to the mainland. Kang Myeong-sung, speaking from a shelter on Yeonpyeong island, which is in sight of North Korean territory, said he didn’t hear any fighter jets but heard the boom of artillery fire.

12 Signs That Something Big Is Happening To The Earth’s Crust Under North And South America

Earthquake Damage - Cracks In The Earth - Photo by Martin Luff

By Michael Snyder

Why are fault lines and volcanoes all over North and South America suddenly waking up?  Are we moving into a time when major earthquakes and volcanic eruptions will become much more common?  For the past several decades, we have been extremely fortunate to have experienced a period of extremely low seismic activity along the west coast of the United States.  You see, the west coast lies right along the infamous Ring of Fire.  Approximately 75 percent of all the volcanoes in the world are on the Ring of Fire, and approximately 90 percent of all global earthquakes occur along the Ring of Fire.  Scientists tell us that it is inevitable that “the Big One” will hit California someday, but people have gotten very apathetic about this because things have been so quiet out there for so many years.  Well, now it appears that things are changing in a big way – and not just along the California coast.  The following are 12 signs that something big is happening to the earth’s crust under North and South America…

#1 The 5.1 earthquake that shook Los Angeles on Friday was the worst earthquake that the city had seen in many years.

#2 Following that earthquake, there were more than 100 aftershocks.

#3 A 4.1 earthquake shook Los Angeles on Saturday.  Scientists are hoping that this earthquake swarm in southern California will end soon.

#4 Earlier this month, a 4.4 earthquake rattled Los Angeles so badly that it caused news anchors to dive under their desks.

#5 A 6.9 earthquake just off the coast of northern California in early March was the largest earthquake to hit the west coast of the United States since 2010.

Maryland to reportedly abandon $125M ObamaCare exchange for new system

maryland11514.jpg

With just days to go before open enrollment ends on March 31, Maryland officials are reportedly planning to abandon its glitch-ridden ObamaCare website and replace the health exchange with technology from Connecticut’s marketplace.

The Washington Post reported late Friday that the board of the Maryland exchange will vote on changing the system that has cost at least $125.5 million at a meeting on Tuesday, the day after the end of the first enrollment period under ObamaCare.

Maryland residents will still be able to use the exchange as it is being replaced with technology from the Connecticut exchange, Access Health CT, officials told The Post. The state is expected to tap consulting firm Deloitte for the overhaul.

Update:

Click here for the paperback edition.

For many people at Pierce Point and the rest of Washington State, the upcoming New Year is a time for hope, and belief that life is going to improve and the Collapse will end. For Grant Matson and the 17th Irregulars, the New Year means only one thing – war. The time has come, and they have received their orders from HQ. Grant must come clean with Lisa and tell her the truth about his work as he plans to abandon his family once again.

While the Loyalists drunkenly and selfishly celebrate New Year’s Eve, the Patriots mount a surprise attack on Frederickson, making way for the 17th Irregulars to move toward Olympia. As the battle moves on, the men quickly realize the importance of everything they have been training for when they find themselves ambushed. Doing everything he can to suppress his own fear and lead the 17th Irregulars, Grant motivates them to persevere as they fight for liberty and restoring the country to the greatness it once was.

Help us make 299 Days: THE MOVIE!!!

Screen Shot 1 2014-03-19 at 8.24.49 PM

Here’s the deal: We have a real Hollywood producer – who is a Patriot and prepper (!) – and we’re going to raise the money to make the first of hopefully three 299 Days movies.  Movie One will be based on Book One and Book Two.  You can listen all about it on this interview of me on the Survival Podcast (which, by the way, is the best interview I’ve ever done.)

We know Hollywood is full of left-wing lunatics so we’re not counting on them to make this movie.  Instead, we – the Patriot and prepper community – are going to do it ourselves.  We’re self-reliant; doing things ourselves is what we do.  A movie is no exception.

We will raise the money in two stages: (1) pre-sales of DVDs and Blu-Rays, and (2) a Kickstarter campaign for the remainder.  (Here is background on how Kickstarter works.)  No one has to pay a dime unless we meet our funding goal and can then make the movie.  Here are the details:

The first stage is from March 20 to April 1 when we will pre-sell DVDs and blu-rays of the movie.  You can pledge to buy them here.  We are not collecting your credit card numbers now; you are merely pledging to buy DVDs and blu-rays.  If we don’t meet the funding goal  We’re doing pre-sales to raise as much money as we can this way so we can ask for less in a Kickstarter campaign.  If we don’t meet your Kickstarter funding goal then we don’t get the Kickstarter money, so we want the Kickstarter goal to be as low as possible.  So please pre-order as many DVDs and Blu-Rays as you can – they make great presents to hand out to people to described why they should be a prepper.  The more you order, the better the chance of the moving being made.

Another Nail in the Dollar’s Coffin

See additional comments on Tea Party Nation.

The plan to remove the US dollar as the world’s reserve currency is largely ignored in the United States. But not in the rest of the world. Russia is the main instigator (or facilitator depending on your viewpoint) in this effort. Putin’s successful overtures to China initiated the move to bring India into the fold. Now Germany is turning its back on the US. Or Obama.

A case could easily be made that the world’s current state of resentment towards the United States is the result of the Obama administration’s actions and positions. How much damage has been done will become apparent in the near future but the world’s leaders and media are no longer supporting this child pResident. Will the collapse of the dollar and the evaporation of people’s wealth become the catalyst to stand up to tyranny? I can only hope.

China & Germany Sign Yuan-Settlement Pact

I haven’t paid too much attention as of late to agreements between China and other nations intended to expand the use of the yuan (renminbi) internationally, because the near-term implications always seem to be exaggerated by many market commentators. That said, this deal between the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) and Germany’s Bundesbank seems quite significant given the importance of Germany within the global economy generally and the E.U. specifically.

From Bloomberg via BusinessWeek:

Germany’s Bundesbank and the People’s Bank of China agreed to cooperate in the clearing and settling of payments in renminbi, paving the way for Frankfurt to corner a share of the offshore market.

The central banks signed a memorandum of understanding in Berlin today, when Chinese President Xi Jinping met German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the Frankfurt-based Bundesbank said in an e-mailed statement.

Treacherous Path To Oblivion

christian mercenary

The conflict between the government and the people over the Second Amendment is being misunderstood. Those in possession of firearms are not asking the several governments if it is legal for them to have such weapons, they are telling these governments that they are legal and any attempt to confiscate them will be forcefully resisted. This is a conflict that supporters of Constitutional rights across the nation are watching with great interest, because it affects every citizen of every state. If Connecticut officials think they are only going to be dealing with citizens of their own state, they are mistaken. Everyone has a stake in Constitutional rights.

The police departments, legislators and governors appear to be under the misconception that they, or the courts are in charge of deciding what rights the people have. The truth is much more stark: the people decide that by deciding which rights they will defend with their lives. Once blood is shed by the government, that decision comes much easier to make. The governments can come to grips with that in their own time, or they can push the issue and find out what little power they actually possess.

The Suppression of Happiness

happiness

One of the great errors of freedom people (myself included) is that we’ve sometimes based our arguments on less-than-optimal grounds.

What I mean is that we argued for freedom on political or legal grounds. And while those arguments were generally accurate and valid, it was a relatively poor line of argument.

Our arguments on economic grounds were somewhat better, but they still missed the largest and clearest areas of human experience.

A stronger strain of argument, in my opinion, involves happiness.

Defining Happiness

Happiness, of course, is a subjective thing. A new car might make one person very happy but be a burden to another (or to that same person at a different stage of life).

Furthermore, happiness is very often temporary. People think they’ll be happy if they win the lottery, but that rush of happiness lasts only a short time, then fades away. Lottery winners are happier than other people for a few weeks, then they return to normal – or worse. The same goes for similar cases.

Long-term happiness is what we would be wisest to pursue. But this type of happiness – which we generally think of as satisfaction – requires things of us. In particular, it requires good choices, the courage to make them, and good information to base them upon.

The best definition of the long-term happiness I know is a paraphrase of Aristotle. It goes like this:
