The New Bern area has suffered the effects of many hurricanes. There’s no reason to think we’ve finished dealing with them. In addition there’s always the possibility that we’ll have to deal with longer term emergencies. For example, are you prepared to cope if solar flares or a cyber-attack took down the electricity grid along the east coast for an extended period of time? How well could you deal with the situation if a terrorist attack shut down the distribution system, and the grocery stores emptied out, and resupply were delayed for a couple of weeks?

These are not pleasant things to think about, but being prepared can make a huge difference for your family. For that reason, the Coastal Carolina Taxpayers Association is sponsoring a Survival Expo on Saturday, August 10th at 2 p.m. at the Highland Park Christian Church, 905 Carolina Avenue, Trent Woods. There will be speakers and displays.

Stanley Kite, Craven County Emergency Services Director, will speak on what government can do to help and what you need to do to look after yourself and your family. Brad Cummings will speak on being financially prepared. Don Murdoch will discuss providing food and water with emphasis on what is needed if the grocery shelves are empty for a period of time. Larry Herwig will speak about whether to stay at home or leave in various circumstances and how to defend yourself and your home if the need should arise. Matt Schwob will talk about how alliances among neighbors can help. Mark Jones will speak about goods to barter.

It’s better to be prepared and not need it, than to need it and not be prepared. The Expo is open to all. We want the people of our community to be ready to look after themselves and help their neighbors.

Rep. Amash: Snowden Is a Whistleblower

Rep. Justin Amash (R-Mich.) said on Sunday that he believes National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden is a whistleblower, not a traitor.

“He may be doing things overseas that we would find problematic, that we would find dangerous,” Amash said on Fox News Sunday. “But as far as Congress is concerned, sure he is a whistleblower. He told us what we need to know.”

Amash explained that although members of the intelligence committees were informed of the details of the NSA’s surveillance, most lawmakers were in the dark about the programs.

Is this a real threat? Is this a cover for a US attack in Syria? Or is this another attempt to overshadow the exposure of arms trafficking in Benghazi by CNN on Tuesday night at 10:00 PM?

I cannot imagine Obama as the commander-in-chief at the start of World War III.

Thousands rally to support embattled Tunisia government

Tens of thousands of Tunisians came out in a show of force for the country’s Islamist-led government on Saturday, in one of the largest demonstrations since the 2011 revolution.

Supporters of the ruling Ennahda party crowded into Kasbah Square next to the prime minister’s office in the capital, Tunis. Ennahda officials said more than 150,000 attended. Fireworks flashed overhead and red Tunisian flags fluttered over a sea of demonstrators.

“No to coups, yes to elections,” the crowd shouted, in a reference to the army-backed ouster of Egypt’s elected Islamist president last month.

The secular opposition is stepping up efforts to oust the transition government in the North African country. At the same time, security forces are struggling to fight off a spike in attacks by radical Islamist militants, whom the moderate Islamist Ennahda has condemned as terrorists.

The al-Qaeda-linked terrorist groups, the al-Nusra Front and the Sham and Iraq Islamic Emirate, have already started their attacks on the Kurdish regions of Aleppo after Saudi and Turkish governments asked them to do so, the Arabic-language Al-Watan newspaper reported.

The Takfiri and al-Qaeda groups are trying to bring the Kurdish regions of Northeastern Syria under their control by getting rid of the Kurdish militias.

The attacks against the Syrian Kurds came after Ahmad al-Jarba, president of the Syrian National Coalition called for participation of Kurdish representatives in the upcoming Geneva II Conference.

Last month, a main Syrian Kurdish group issued a call to battle extremist militants in the country after an eminent Kurdish politician was killed in a car bomb attack.

“We call on the Kurdish people… to step forward… . Anyone fit to bear arms should join the ranks of the Committees to protect the Kurdish People (YPG) and repel the assaults of these armed groups,” said a recently released YPG statement.

According to a source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, the politician identified as Isa Huso was assassinated outside his house in the Syrian town of Al-Qamishli late in July.

US Dollar Is No Longer Welcome in Syria

Assad has banned the US dollar in Syria. Most people would say “so what”. As Qaddafi found out in Libya, dictators are not allowed to challenge the supremacy of the US dollar. Does this mean that Al Qaeda must use Syrian Lira to buy US arms in Syria?

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad issued a decree Sunday banning the use of foreign currency in commercial transactions, state news agency SANA said.

The US dollar is the preferred foreign currency in Syria where the lira has lost three quarters of its value against the greenback since the outbreak of the anti-regime uprising more than two years ago.

At the start of the conflict in March 2011 one dollar fetched 50 liras. while a dollar today is worth more than 200 liras.

And it’s stuck with a base of Jacksonian Democrats who are highly suspicious of centralized power, value their independence and don’t think that anyone should tell them what to do. Meanwhile the Republican Party’s donors come from a more traditional Republican brand of politics.

It dwells in a comfortable bubble where nation building still works, amnesty solves problems and a few good attack ads can swing any election. It doesn’t understand the issues on foreign policy and it can’t connect with domestic issues anymore. That bubble is Washington D.C.

Doug Hagmann: Unmasking the embassy threat

There is one thing certain about the publicized threat to our embassies; it is not what it is presented to be. To accept the official explanation of a nebulous threat from al Qaeda as the reason for closing our embassies across the Middle East and North Africa is being dangerously naive and simplistic.

This is much more serious than what we are being told, but not for the reasons we are being given. We are seeing the consequences of a longrunning “Cold War” on two major fronts of political conflict that could escalate into military engagement with proxy nations of world super powers. The world, and life as we know it, could change in an instant should we awaken one morning to the news of bombs flying across the Middle East. That is a very real possibility, as we are now in a heightened proxy war environment. We are standing in a thick forest of dry tinder, and the smallest of sparks could ignite a conflagration the likes of which we have never before seen.
