This Crazy Cyprus Deal Could Screw Up A Lot More Than Cyprus…

Bank run

You can be forgiven for thinking that you don’t need to give a hoot about what’s going on in Cyprus this weekend.

After all, it’s just a little island somewhere in the Mediterranean.

But what’s going on in Cyprus could actually matter — not just to the rest of Europe, but to the rest of the world.

Here’s the short version of what’s happening:

Cyprus’s banks, like many banks in Europe, are bankrupt.

Cyprus went to the Eurozone to get a bailout, the same way Ireland, Greece, and other European countries have.

The Eurozone powers-that-be gave Cyprus a bailout — but with a startling condition that has never before been imposed on any major banking system since the start of the global financial crisis in 2008.

And … here’s the important part …

Other depositors at weak banks all over Europe, in places like Spain, Italy, and Greece, will rightly wonder whether this is the beginning of a new era of bank bailouts, an era in which bank depositors are going lose some of their money.

What do you think those other depositors in Spain, Italy, Greece, etc., are going to feel like doing when they realize that, if their banks ever need a bailout, they might have their deposits seized?

That’s right.

They’re going to feel like yanking their money out of their banks.

Because It Is Time

Welcome to what is probably the only website in the world exclusively dedicated to the absolute primacy of Jesus Christ according to the teachings of Bl. John Duns Scotus and the Franciscan school (“Franciscan” because, like the Immaculate Conception of Mary, they have championed the doctrine of the absolute primacy of Christ the King in all creation, but they are by no means the first or only ones to propose it; rather, as can be gathered from this website, this doctrine is found in the Scriptures, Fathers, Doctors, Saints and Mystics of the Church of all ages because it is simply the truth!).

Please note that all Christians are united in attributing a universal primacy to Christ; after all, He is God, the Eternal Word, made flesh! But is His universal primacy as the God-Man a relative primacy, in other words, occasioned by the sin of man? Or is His primacy absolute and unconditional and not dependent upon man’s need for Redemption? It is a question of God’s creative plan. Was Christ willed as the center of creation or was His coming due exclusively to man’s sin?

CYPRUS PARLIAMENT DELAYS BAILOUT VOTE, BANK HOLIDAY EXTENDED TO TUES, PRESIDENT WARNS BANKS WILL COLLAPSE IF NOT PASSED

gold repatriation

An avalanche is headed our way.

In his interview with The Doc last week, Jim Willie stated that THE COLLAPSE IS ON OUR DOORSTEP! and made the case that the great financial reset will begin with a small trigger in Europe.

The Cypriot depositor haircut to bailout the Cypriot banking system is beginning to look like it could be just that trigger, as the situation has turned from bad to worse.

With the general public in an uproar, the ratification vote by the Cypriot Parliament on the depositor haircut/ daylight robbery has been delayed until 4pm local time Monday as the vote reportedly had lost sufficient support to pass!  Ahead of today’s scheduled vote, the plan was 9 votes short in a 56 seat legislature!
In response, Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades threatened that if the depositor haircut is not passed, the entire Cypriot banking system will collapse, and former Central Bank President Afxentis Afxentiou claimed that if the bill is not passed, Cyprus opens the road to chaos, and that Cyprus will turn into Libya!

The problem is that even if enough arms can be twisted by 4pm Monday, the European markets open in 16 hours, with no official agreement in place regarding the Cypriot bailout, and the rest of the southern Eurozone’s population likely headed to their local bank to empty their account first thing Monday am.

Italy’s Property Confiscation Is Next

So now we are seeing what “fair share” really means: confiscation.  Eat the “rich” to feed the poor has been a refrain since the 1960’s. Except now the banks are the ones being fed. Merkel is pulling the strings but the world’s economic future is at risk. As we are seeing unfold. Economic contagion is spreading in Europe: Cyprus was first and Italy seems to be next in line. Spain, Portugal, Greece, Ireland and France? Batter up: it is the bottom of the ninth, with 1 out and 2 strikes against Italy.

German Commerzbank Suggests Wealth Tax In Italy Next

While some argue that Cyprus was “one of the biggest money-washing machines for Russian criminals,” and others that Cyprus ex-Pat community and energy resources brough deposits (not to say their high deposit interest rates), it seems the European Union (IMF et al.) have decided that the route to crisis stabilization, just as we outlined here over a year ago and updated here, is through a wealth tax.

However, as Handelsblatt reports, the gross distortions of wealth distribution among both core and peripheral nations (evident in the chasm between ‘mean’ and ‘median’ net assets – or wealth) makes some nations more ‘capable’ of ‘giving’ and as Commerzbank’s chief economist notes, median wealth in Italy is EUR164,000 (as opposed to Austria’s median of around EUR76,000 and mean of around EUR265,000) meaning that in theory Italy has no debt crisis (with net assets at 173% of GDP) – significantly more than the Germans at 124% – “so it would make sense, in Italy a one-time property tax levy,” he suggested.

A tax rate of 15% on financial assets would probably be enough to push the Italian government debt to below the critical level of 100% of gross domestic product.” So there you have it, the ‘new deal’ in Europe, as we warned, is ‘wealth taxes’ and testing the “capacity of Cypriots” appears to be the strawman on what the public will take before social unrest becomes intolerable.

Boehner says he ‘absolutely’ trusts Obama

Budget Battle BoehnerHouse Speaker John Boehner says he “absolutely” trusts President Barack Obama — not that they don’t have their differences.

Boehner tells ABC’s “This Week” that the two have a good relationship and that they’re “open with each other … honest with each other.” But the Ohio lawmaker says they’re trying to bridge some big differences.

One issue they agree on: The U.S. doesn’t have an immediate crisis in terms of debt.

Cyprus bailout Parliament postpones debate amid anger

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lL8J_jd2Xqw

I should make a cartoon with Benanke holder a gun to Lew holding a gun to an American depositor. Does that pistol hold more than 7 rounds or can it be modified to hold more rounds?

This Is What I Call a Trigger

The events unfolding in Europe have just started. The Cyprus “tax” (confiscation) has started to collapse the EURO as shown below. We will know in a few hours how the gold markets will react.

What should you do? The real question is what should you have already done: removed your money out of 1’s and 0’s. If a bank run starts when the European banks open, you may find yourself waking up to a bank holiday in the United States tomorrow morning. At that point, the consequences of a world wide economic collapse will no longer be a point of speculation.

FX Market Opens, EUR Hammered, CHF Bid; S&P To Open -30pts

As Citi’s Steven Englander suggested earlier, the developments in Cyprus will lead to EUR selling and USD, CHF, GBP, NOK and SEK buying (in that order). He adds, the issue is whether to believe that the Cyprus levy on depositors is one-off, but depositors and investors elsewhere could easily see this as another in a string of ‘one-offs’ and react badly.

State Dept.: If Request Were Made for International Monitoring of Papal Election ‘We Would Take It Very Seriously’

State Department Spokesperson Victoria Nuland

State Department Spokesperson Victoria Nuland

State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland said on Friday that if a request were to “come forward” that the papal election be monitored by an international organization called the Organization for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), the U.S. government “would take it very seriously.”
Nuland made the remark only after she did some “digging” on the issue because Associated Press reporter Matthew Lee had questioned her at Thursday’s briefing about whether the administration believed the papal election had met international standards.

At both Thursday’s and Friday’s briefings there was more than a little jocularity in the way Nuland handled Lee’s questions, and there was some laughter among the reporters who witnessed the exchanges. But Nuland’s ultimate answer that the U.S. would take “very seriously” a request to monitor the papal elections was one she did in fact research and did not need to give.

Illegal alien child-rape suspect was actually released by ICE in 2011

The information below comes from an article at the Examiner.com and the websites of NC Immigrant Rights Project and El Centro Hispano.  I was surprised to read that the  Durham Partnership for Children is one of the agencies sponsoring these organizations. I would suggest that the organizations and universities supporting these groups consider donating some financial aid to help the children impacted by their “support”.

David DeGerolamo

Point 1:

The North Carolina Immigrant Rights Project (NC-IRP) is working to protect the rights of undocumented immigrants which have been put at risk by the various cooperation programs between local law enforcement agencies and Immigration and Customs Enforcement which have led to racial profiling. NC-IRP works toward this goal by representing individuals in the immigration courts on a pro bono basis, as well as organizing and educating against these programs.

Point 2:

Jose Guadalupe Ramirez-Ambriz

Jose Guadalupe Ramirez-Ambriz, 38, is currently wanted on multiple counts of first-degree statutory sex offense with a child under age 13 and indecent liberties with a minor. He is currently on the run and investigators with the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) and the U.S. Marshals’ Fugitive Task Force are searching for the illegal alien.

Tehran: Our commanders now authorized to open fire. Go home, Obama!

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei flanked by Rev Guards chiefs

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei flanked by Rev Guards chiefs

The words and deeds coming out of Washington in the last three days bring little comfort to the Israeli government as it prepares for Barack Obama’s first visit as president Wednesday, March 20.

According to an authoritative leak, Washington has effectively cancelled the Europe-based missile shield system that was designed to protect that continent and Israel against Iranian ballistic missile attack. The cancellation was part of the plan announced by Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel last week to install 14 additional missile interceptors in California and Alaska to build up United States defenses against a threatened North Korean attack.
Not only has the Obama administration reduced its missile defense commitment to Europe and Israel, DEBKAfile notes that Washington persists in overlooking the tight coordination in tactics and diplomacy on nuclear issues between Pyongyang and Tehran.

The European-based missile shield has been put forward by Moscow repeatedly as a major obstacle to Russian-US cooperation on nuclear arms reduction and “other issues” – meaning the really hot-button ones of a nuclear Iran and the Syrian civil war.

By meeting Moscow’s complaint, Barack Obama was gambling heavily on coming out of the understandings he reached with Russian President Vladimir Putin with an acceptable settlement of the Iranian nuclear controversy and the future of the Assad regime in Syria.

So far, his winnings are slim.

Russian officials are not rushing forward to welcome the reshuffling of missile shields between Europe and America. Kremlin circles were quoted Sunday by The New York Times as commenting stiffly that there would be no reaction until they were fully briefed by American officials next week.

In any case, Tehran wants no part in the diplomatic softball game the Obama administration is playing with Moscow. Indeed, Iranian officials are behaving exactly like their North Korean partners – with threats.

From YouTube:

Switzerland has temporarily pegged its currency (the Swiss franc) to the euro through an executive decision of its central bank (2011-09-06 ). There is no statutory basis for this peg. Technically, the Swiss have put a floor on the EUR/CHF exchange rate (Swiss francs per euro). Exiting this peg would be very easy through another executive decision of the central bank.

Only Jesus can save the eurozone: Deutsche Bank

Deutsche Bank's global head of FX strategy compares the 14-year-old eurozone to an angst-ridden teen who needs a positive role model 'free of sin' like Jesus to solve its economic woes.

Deutsche Bank’s global head of FX strategy compares the 14-year-old eurozone to an angst-ridden teen who needs a positive role model ‘free of sin’ like Jesus to solve its economic woes.

Deutsche Bank‘s global head of FX strategy, Bilal Hafeez, recently gave a speech at the annual Deutsche Bank Mittelstand (small and medium-sized enterprises) FX conference in Hamburg, Germany.

The bank’s research department transcribed Hafeez’s speech and sent it out to clients in a note.

The speech focuses on the euro area’s economic woes and the need for the currency bloc to move forward with further integration in order to be economically successful.

Excerpt:

Europe’s Saviour

Who else has entered the terrible teens? The Euro-Area! It was born in 1999, and so is currently fourteen years old. It has all the hallmarks of teenage angst. It is ridden with internal conflicts, it is groping around for structure, and it is suspicious of authority. So who can be a positive role model for the Euro-Area? Well it cannot be the “fathers”: Germany or France. It has to be an external figure that all Europeans respect, and whose motives and character are beyond dispute. That rules out anyone living as even the most competent person will make missteps or have something from their past dredged up to undermine them. That leaves us with historical figures whose lives have been laid bare by history. I can only think of one figure that is respected by most Europeans and has never sinned, Jesus!

For Everyone Shocked By What Just Happened… And Why This Is Just The Beginning

Today, lots of people wake up in shock and horror to what happened in Cyprus: a forced capital reallocation mandated by political elites under the guise of an “equity investment” in insolvent banks, which is really code for a “coercive, mandatory wealth tax.” If less concerned about political correctness, one could say that what just happened was daylight robbery from savers to banks and the status quo. These same people may be even more shocked to learn that today’s Cypriot “resolution” is merely the first of many such coercive interventions into personal wealth, first in Europe, and then everywhere else.

For the benefit of those people, we wish to point them to our article from September 2011, “The “Muddle Through” Has Failed: BCG Says “There May Be Only Painful Ways Out Of The Crisis“, which predicted and explained all of this and much more. What else did the September BCG study conclude? Simply that such mandatory, coercive wealth tax is merely the beginning for a world in which there was some $21 trillion in excess debt as of 2009, a number which has since ballooned to over $30 trillion. And with inflation woefully late in appearing and “inflating away” said debt overhang, Europe first is finally moving to Plan B, and is using Cyrprus as its Guniea Pig.

For those who missed it the first time, here it is again. Somehow we think many more people will listen this time around:

Restructuring the debt overhang in the euro zone would require financing and would be a daunting task. In order to finance controlled restructuring, politicians could well conclude that it was necessary to tax the existing wealth of the private sector. Many politicians would see taxing financial assets as the fairest way of resolving the problem. Taxing existing financial assets would acknowledge one fact: these investments are not as valuable as their owners think, as the debtors (governments, households, and corporations) will be unable to meet their commitments. Exhibit 3 shows the one-time tax on financial assets required to provide the necessary funds for an orderly restructuring.
