Greeks Panic As Drug Firms Slash Medicine Supplies By 90% On Bad Debts

Greece is facing a serious shortage of medicines amid claims that pharmaceutical multinationals have halted shipments to the country because of the economic crisis and, as The Guardian reports, concerns that the drugs will be exported by middlemen because prices are higher in other European countries. Rubbing further salt into the Greek (un-medicated) wound, the Red Cross slashed its supply of donor blood to Greece because it had not paid its bills on time.Pharmacies in Greece describe chaotic scenes as clients desperately search from shop to shop for much-needed drugs. Greece’s Pharmaceutical Association said “around 300 drugs are in very short supply,” adding that “It’s a disgrace. The companies are ensuring that they come in dribs and drabs to avoid prosecution. Everyone is really frightened.” The fear for the multinationals remains that wholesalers can legally sell to other nations at higher prices and a “combination of Greece’s low medicine prices and unpaid debt by the state.” Lines form early and ‘get very aggressive’ one pharmacy exclaimed, “We have reached a tragic point.”

Hundreds of drugs are in short supply and the situation is getting worse, according to the Greek drug regulator. The government has drawn up a list of more than 50 pharmaceutical companies it accuses of halting or planning to halt supplies because of low prices in the country.

Communist Propaganda from the Front

Organizing for ActionFriend —

Brace yourself.

If congressional Republicans don’t act by tomorrow, we’re going to be hit by a series of devastating, automatic budget cuts called the sequester.

It’s a sledgehammer to the budget, our economy, and millions of Americans across the country — and the most frustrating part? It doesn’t have to happen.

The majority of Americans support President Obama’s balanced approach to deficit reduction — add your name if you do, too.

So far, congressional Republicans are refusing to compromise — all because they don’t want to close tax loopholes for millionaires, billionaires, vacation homes, and corporate jets. Seriously.

This has very real consequences.

On the chopping block are 10,000 teaching jobs, more than 70,000 kids’ spots in Head Start, $35 million for local fire departments, $43 million to make sure seniors don’t go hungry, and access to nutrition assistance for 600,000 women and their families. That’s just a few of the things we’ll lose.

President Obama has put forth a balanced deficit reduction plan with smart spending cuts that protect the critical investments needed to strengthen middle-class families and our economy.

We need to send a strong signal about where Americans stand on this issue.

Add your name today:

P.S. — If Congress fails to act, this fight doesn’t end tomorrow. We’ll need to put even more pressure on Republicans to stop these budget cuts and pass a balanced plan. Join this fight now.

Wouldn’t It Be Nice If the News Reported an Increase in Jobs Created…

The claims for unemployment benefits fell more than expected last week. The speculated reason for this “good news” is that there is “some traction in the labor market recovery”. What was not reported was that last Monday was a federal holiday (Presidents’ Day) and all offices were closed. How will we know when a recovery actually is occurring? When the news reports the number of new jobs created instead of the number of unemployment claims filed without manipulating the labor force.

U.S. jobless claims hint at improving labor market

The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits fell more than expected last week, suggesting some traction in the labor market recovery.

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits dropped 22,000 to a seasonally adjusted 344,000, the Labor Department said on Thursday. The prior week’s claims figure was revised to show 4,000 more applications received than previously reported.

Shangri-La

It seems odd to now voice my mind and not be called a kook, it’s interesting to have a conversation with someone just now brushing the sleep from their eyes, you can stay on point but you know the person still has much more pain to work through. I was at the local feed store and a conversation was struck in regards to how much ammo a gentleman has stored away, he was proud of his two bricks of 22′s. I bit my tongue….Wisely!

None the less….. they are awakening, I find no reason to place salt on the open wound. Doom?…..Gloom? The élite know what’s best for us.

…they will never stop coming, folks.  These are hardcore Marxist ideologues.
(I don’t give them credit of being ‘real’ Marxists because they get to play at
Marxism from the safety of their gated communities and security details and
limos.  Any real Marxist from Russia, Cuba, China would eat the American
version’s lunch.)

There can be no coexistence.  They mean to have war – with you.

Said better than I ever could! Sam speaks of the essence, after all it the essence that most lack the ability of defining or understanding, it’s the essence that wants to destroy us and our way of live….. that hangs in the balance.

Sturm, Ruger profits soar on strong gun sales

Sturm, Ruger & Co., one of the nation’s leading gun companies, reported fourth-quarter earnings and sales Wednesday that blew past analysts’ expectations.

The Southport, Conn.-based company said it earned $1 per share on sales of $141.8 million in the final three months of 2012. Analysts were looking for earnings of 82 cents per share and sales of $122 million.

The results do not fully reflect the recent spike in gun sales, most of which occurred have occurred in 2013.

Shares of Sturm, Ruger (RGR) were up nearly 4% in extended trading.

“Demand for our products outpaced the growth in overall industry demand,” Sturm, Ruger CEO Michael Fifer said in a statement, pointing to the number of federal background checks – a barometer of gun sales – that were made this year. Fifer will discuss the company’s results in a conference call with analysts Thursday morning.

For the full year, net income increased 77% to $491.8 million, or $3.60 per share.

Gun retailers have struggled to keep up with demand for firearms in the months following a mass shooting in Newtown, Conn. The shooting, which left 20 children and six adults dead, reignited the debate over U.S. gun laws. Sales had already been on the rise since President Obama’s reelection in November.

Rand Paul To CIA: “Can You Kill With Drones In The USA?”

Update 3/5/13: Eric Holder provides Sen. Paul with the answer.

This letter is a few days old, but is very important for every American to be aware of. Essentially, Rand Paul is threatening to filibuster Barack Obama’s nominee for the CIA, John Brennan, due to his refusal to answer a simple question:

Do you believe that the President has the power to authorize lethal force, such as a drone strike, against a U.S. citizen on U.S. soil, and without trial?

This should not be a complicated question to answer, yet it seems Obama, Brennan and pretty much every other little power consumed bureaucrat is incapable of doing so.  Below is Rand Paul’s letter reprinted in full (my [Michael Krieger of Liberty Blitzkrieg blog] emphasis added).

Dear Mr. Brennan,

In consideration of your nomination to be Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), I have repeatedly requested that you provide answers to several questions clarifying your role in the approval of lethal force against terrorism suspects, particularly those who are U.S. citizens. Your past actions in this regard, as well as your view of the limitations to which you are subject, are of critical importance in assessing your qualifications to lead the CIA. If it is not clear that you will honor the limits placed upon the Executive Branch by the Constitution, then the Senate should not confirm you to lead the CIA.

During your confirmation process in the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence (SSCI), committee members have quite appropriately made requests similar to questions I raised in my previous letter to you-that you expound on your views on the limits of executive power in using lethal force against U.S. citizens, especially when operating on U.S. soil. In fact, the Chairman of the SSCI, Sen. Feinstein, specifically asked you in post-hearing questions for the record whether the Administration could carry out drone strikes inside the United States. In your response, you emphasized that the Administration “has not carried out” such strikes and “has no intention of doing so.” I do not find this response sufficient.

The question that I and many others have asked is not whether the Administration has or intends to carry out drone strikes inside the United States, but whether it believes it has the authority to do so. This is an important distinction that should not be ignored.

Simon Black: From the man who brought you the ‘indefinite military detention’ clause…

Carl Levin

“There is no bar to this nation’s holding one of its own citizens as an enemy combatant.”

US Senator Carl Levin

My dictionary defines the word “sociopath” as “a person with a personality disorder manifesting itself in extreme antisocial attitudes and behavior and a lack of conscience.

I don’t know about you, but it seems to me that someone who tries to award himself the power to lock people up indefinitely, without due process, is expressing extreme antisocial attitudes. And quite possibly a lack of conscience.

Psychologists might deem such an individual a sociopath. Yet in the Land of the Free, they’re elected to the United States Congress.

This is the world of Carl Levin, a Senator from Michigan who championed the indefinite military detention clause in last year’s National Defense Authorization Act.

In Levin’s world, it’s perfectly acceptable to hold US citizens on US soil without charges or trial, based merely on the suspicion of terrorist activity in the sole discretion of the government.

This, of course, is a rather convenient position for someone who has been in government for nearly the totality of his adult life. At age 78, he’s been firmly ensconced in the US Senate since 1979 and was a politician at the local level prior.

Mr. Levin is now at it again.

Wal-Mart Situation “Getting Worse” New Leaks Reveal

Two weeks ago, Wal-Mart stunned the world when a leaked memo discloses that February sales had been a “total disaster” and the company was facing the worst February start since 2006. Today, Bloomberg’s deep throat in Bentonville strikes again, as a new leak emerges. “Wal-Mart Stores Inc (WMT), already struggling to woo shoppers constrained by higher taxes, is ““getting worse” at keeping shelves stocked, the retailer’s U.S. chief told executives, according to minutes of an officers’ meeting obtained by Bloomberg News. “We run out quickly and the new stuff doesn’t come in,” U.S. Chief Executive Officer Bill Simon said, according to the minutes of the Feb. 1 meeting. Simon called “self-inflicted wounds” Wal-Mart’s “biggest risk” and said an executive vice president had been appointed to fix the restocking problem, according to the minutes.”

So even as the market completely ignored the Wal-Mart revenue issue, which is “getting worse”, the bigger problem is that now it appears to be affecting the company’s supply-chain, which likely means that all of WMT’s upstream vendors are suffering from the same malaise that has gripped all those entities that still rely on such historical trivia as profitability and cash flow:

Wal-Mart’s inability to keep its shelves stocked coincides with slowing sales growth. Same-store sales in the U.S. for the 13 weeks ending April 26 will be little changed, Simon said in the company’s Feb. 21 earnings call. Comparable sales increased 1 percent in the fourth quarter, compared with an average of 1.4 percent from analysts surveyed by Bloomberg. This year the shares gained 4.2 percent through yesterday, compared with a 5 percent advance for the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index.

WNC journalist resigns following threats over request for gun permit records

An uproar over a Western North Carolina editor’s request for a list of concealed-carry gun permits led to the editor withdrawing his request, and resigning from the weekly mountain paper.

Robert Horne, the editor of the weekly Cherokee Scout since 2005, resigned from his position Tuesday, following the backlash over public records request he made to Cherokee Sheriff Keith Lovin for a list of residents who hold concealed-carry permits. He plans on working through May, and then leaving the state.

Cherokee County is located in the mountainous,  westernmost corner of the state.

Horne has asked for a list of concealed-carry gun permits on Feb. 19, but Lovin denied it and then posted a response from Horne about how the information should be public on the sheriff’s Facebook page, which sparked a deluge of comments critical of the editor, according to this account from the Columbia Journalism Review.

Threats to newspaper staffers and Horne started coming in, with Horne reporting several of the threats to the same sheriff’s office

An Administrative Amnesty

AP

The Department of Homeland Security’s immigration enforcement division was ordered last week to reduce their illegal immigrant detainee populations to 26 percent below the legally required level, according to a research organization that monitors immigration issues.

That reduction is significantly greater than those required by the impending budget cuts the department has cited for the release of the detainees.

The announcement of detainee releases on Tuesday set off a firestorm on Capitol Hill. The White House has tried to distance itself from the decision, which was closely followed by the public announcement of the departure of DHS’s top immigration enforcement and deportation official.

The Department of Homeland Security’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) division cited impending “sequestration” budget cuts in its decision to release illegal immigrant detainees across the country.

“As fiscal uncertainty remains over the continuing resolution and possible sequestration, ICE has reviewed its detained population to ensure detention levels stay within ICE’s current budget,” ICE spokesperson Gillian Christensen said in a news release.

Founded By Geniuses And Run By Idiots

mencken2

H. L. Mencken

Government is actually the worst failure of civilized man. There has never been a really good one, and even those that are most tolerable are arbitrary, cruel, grasping and unintelligent.

Food for thought…
  •  If you can get arrested for hunting or fishing without  a license, but not for being in the country illegally … you might live in a  country founded by geniuses but run by idiots.
  • If you have to get your  parents’ permission to go on a field trip or take an aspirin in school, but not  to get an abortion … you might live in a country founded by geniuses but run  by idiots.
  • If the only school curriculum allowed to explain how we got  here is evolution, but the government stops a $15 million construction project  to keep a rare spider from evolving to extinction … you might live in a  country founded by geniuses but run by idiots.
  • If you have to show  identification to board an airplane, cash a check, buy liquor, or check out a  library book, but not to vote who runs the government … you might live in a  country founded by geniuses but run by idiots.
  • If the government wants to  ban stable, law-abiding citizens from owning gun magazines with more than ten  rounds, but gives 20 F-16 fighter jets to the crazy new leaders in Egypt … you  might live in a country founded by geniuses but run by idiots.

Breakdown of Law and Order: “We Can’t Depend On the Police Department”

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a5BoG_Q72pg

Budget cuts across the country have stripped local police departments of personnel at an alarming rate. So much so that Americans from coast-to-coast are now being forced to fend for themselves.

Our latest example comes from East Oakland’s Arcadia Park, where law and order have broken down to such an extent that residents have been been left with no other choice but to band together to police their own streets.

According to one member of this neighborhood watch on steroids, it’s turning into the Wild West.

With criminals running rampant, when seconds count, police are often minutes away:

We don’t have a choice. Either die or we hire some security ourselves, because we can’t depend on the police department,” said Alaska Tarvins of the Arcadia Park Board of Directors.
