The President just gave a press conference on “gun violence” – here is the meat of what he said:
“I have charged my vice president to work with my cabinet and with others to come up with a concrete set of proposals for reducing gun violence, no later than January, and I intend to push that plan immediately [upon submission]…”
“I am betting that the vast majority, even of gun owners, are willing to admit that mentally unstable people should not be able to readily obtain weapons of war“
“I will use all the powers of this office to reduce the effects of gun violence by every means available to me. That won’t be easy, but I have to try, and I can’t do it alone – I will use members of my cabinet, of congress, and outside agencies to achieve this goal”
This may not be verbatim, as I was trying to capture it in real time.

There is now about 48 hours until the rubber hits the road. What happens in the next 2 days: in a somewhat surprising development earlier, the Republicans today managed to turn the tables on the president, and as reported this morning, proposed an alternative “Plan B”, one which the president has already said he will not to accept as it extends the current Bush tax cuts on all those making $1 million or less (and thus not nearly punitive enough in the eyes of Obama’s electorate). The reason for this strawman is that unless Obama settles on some compromise definition of ‘wealthy’ between his already adjusted definition which moved from $250,000 to $400,000 earlier, and the $1 million cutoff proposed by the republicans, republicans will take the Plan B proposal to the House on Thursday and pass it, only so it is immediately voted down by the Senate, but have the popular backstop of saying “they gave it their best” just as Ken Langone suggested to Rand Paul earlier today on CNBC. And as Reuters reported, it appears that the drop dead date for House majority leader Cantor is Thursday, at which point he will vote, and pass, Plan B. At that point the Fiscal Cliff debate for 2012 is as good as over, as the resulting animosity that develops in the subsequent days will guarantee no further compromises are achievable for the balance of the year.
In other words, tomorrow is when all the horse trading will culminate: if there is no resolution by the end of day, the Thursday Plan B vote is all but assured, as is the resultant Risk Off phase, especially for all those who saw in today’s moves yet another glimmer of a compromise when in reality it was all merely the latest and greatest big PR stunt. In the meantime, trigger happy algos will send stocks moving wildly in eiuther direction based on headlines over the next 24 hours, although the consensus is that following the massive overbought surge in stocks in the past month, that a fiscal deal is now largely priced in, and a sell the news event is likely to result following a firm agreement… assuming one comes of course.

We couldn’t have said it better: “Bank of America blocks users from accessing websites that present certain risks to the bank.”

Several days ago, various media outlets misinterpreted a statement out of Russia, in which it was said that Assad may be defeated by the local Al Qaeda-funded and US-supported rebels, and which many took as an indication that the geopolitics in the Middle East may be shifting as Russian support of Syria was ending. Turns out nothing could be further from the truth, and moments ago the AP reports that a “Russian navy squadron has set off for the Mediterranean” with destination Syria. The official point of the exercise: evacuation. The unofficial: anything but. “The Defense Ministry said Tuesday that the ships will rotate with those that have been in the area since November. Russian diplomats said last week that Moscow is preparing plans to evacuate thousands of Russians from Syria if necessary. The ministry did not say whether the navy ships are intended for an evacuation.” Remember that “evacuation” was the pretext when Russia also sent the Grand Missile Cruiser Moskva off the Gaza coast last month at the height of the latest escalation of the Israel-Gaza conflict. The pretext then? “Evacuation” too. Why anyone would send their Black Sea Navy flag ship to ‘evacuate’ a few hundred citizens, all of whom are perfectly proficient with instructions on how to board a plane, is of course, anyone guess.
Alternatively, why Russia would go ahead and do everything to defend its strategic Syria naval base in Tartus, and a regime it has been very sympathetic to in the past, is pretty clear to everyone, especially now that the US and NATO are openly supplying Syria’s northern neighbor Turkey with missiles: for now defensive, or so the media spin goes.
The squadron of five ships that sailed from the Baltic Sea base of Baltiysk includes a destroyer, a tugboat, a tanker and two large amphibious vessels that could evacuate hundreds of people.
Right, evacuation is the Destroyer’s primary role. Look it up: it’s in the SOP. And just in case one squadron was not enough, here is another.
Another group of three navy ships departed Tuesday from Severomorsk, the main base of Russia’s Northern Fleet on the Kola Peninsula.

Private equity firm Cerberus has put U.S. firearms maker Freedom Group up for sale following Friday’s killing of 20 children and 6 adults at the Sandy Hook school shooting in Connecticut.
Freedom Group includes Bushmaster, maker of the rifle used in the shooting at the school in Newtown. Cerberus bought Bushmaster in 2006 before adding another 10 makers of firearms, ammunition and accessories to the group.
“It is apparent that the Sandy Hook tragedy was a watershed event that has raised the national debate on gun control to an unprecedented level,” Cerberus Capital Management said in a statement.
Cerberus will hire advisers to carry out a sale of the company, and return the money to its investors, which include the California State Teachers’ Retirement System (CalSTRS).
The investment firm said it was not seeking to influence the debate on gun control but had decided to sell Freedom Group to protect the interests of its clients, which also include the pension plans of other municipal workers, endowments, institutions and individuals.

If past is prologue expect the Benghazi investigations to be covered up whether or not Secretary of State Hillary Clinton testifies. According to Foreign Policy Magazine that despite the House and Senate foreign relations committees having announced she would testify on Benghazi this week, the State Department said last Thursday “that’s not a done deal.” On Saturday, the deal was undone when it was announced that Hillary would not testify due to health issues but would be able to continue to work from home.
Recall how it was Clinton who was one of the first top Obama administration officials to mislead the public by falsely blaming a YouTube video for the deadly attack. President Barack Obama, U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice and White House Press Secretary James Carney towed-the-line and repeated the same falsehood knowing it would be reported as the truth by the media.
Hopes rose on Monday that Washington will be able to step back from the “fiscal cliff” as President Barack Obama and Republican John Boehner inched toward a deal that would prevent steep tax hikes and spending cuts that could push the economy into recession.
The two men held talks at the White House and aides from both parties said they were optimistic an agreement was shaping up.
Though Obama and Boehner appeared to be edging closer to an agreement, substantial hurdles remain. Rank-and-file Republicans could have trouble with the tax increases on the wealthiest Americans that are likely to be part of any deal, while Obama could have a tough time selling spending cuts to his fellow Democrats.
Democratic Representative Chris Van Hollen, a member of the House leadership from Maryland, said he saw a 50 percent chance of putting an accord in place before January, when $600 billion worth of across-the-board tax increases and spending hikes are due to begin kicking in.
“I still think there’s quite a ways to go before the finish line,” he said.
But investors were cheered by signs of progress and the Standard & Poor’s 500 index of U.S. stocks rose 1.19 percent.
