(NBC News, New York)  Two airplanes at John F. Kennedy Airport have been cleared after a caller warned that hijackers were targeting them.

The planes had already landed when the call came in, law enforcement sources said. The planes were searched in an isolated area as a precaution, and the level of concern was low.

The affected planes were an American Airlines flight from San Francisco, and a Finnair flight from Helsinki, sources said.

The Finnair flight was cleared around 4:30 p.m., a federal official said, and an all-clear on the American Airlines flight followed shortly afterward.

The Port Authority Police received a phoned threat that hijackers wearing gas masks were hiding in the wheel wells of a plane that left from Chicago, but the information was vague, sources said. The American Airlines plane was carrying four federal air marshals, sources said.

If you think this spate of bomb threats, and now hijacking threats is all for show, then you’re probably correct – but what would make more sense than to frustrate and anger us, causing a massive expenditure of public resources, which will, after several weeks of un-accomplished threats, devolve into public complacency, if no real event occurs?  That is when a successful attack would have the greatest effect, from a terrorist perspective.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Diplomats at the U.S. Embassy in Beirut have started to destroy classified material as a security precaution amid anti-American protests in Lebanon and elsewhere in the Middle East and North Africa.

A State Department status report obtained Monday by The Associated Press said the Beirut embassy had “reviewed its emergency procedures and is beginning to destroy classified holdings.” It also said that local Lebanese employees were sent home early due to protests by the militant Shiite group Hezbollah over an anti-Muslim film produced in the U.S.

In Washington, a State Department official said there was no imminent threat to the heavily fortified Beirut embassy, which is about an hour away from where the nearest demonstration is planned.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss security procedures, said the decision to “reduce classified holdings” was routine and made by embassy staff.

Protesters have breached the walls or compounds of several U.S. diplomatic missions, including the consulate in Benghazi, Libya where the ambassador and three other Americans were killed, Cairo and Tunis since last Tuesday.

(Reuters)  Athens – Greek judges went on strike on Monday, kicking of a series of walkouts by state employees ranging from doctors to tax officials in protest at wage cuts and labor reforms demanded by international lenders in exchange for more aid.

Judges were hearing only cases nearing the statute of limitations and are expected to continue their labor action throughout this week, potentially delaying thousands of cases waiting to be heard by the already overstretched legal system.

“We are determined to defend our current wages,” the judges’ associations said in a statement. “We won’t tolerate the downgrading of the judges.”

Judges say they have already seen their salaries reduced by as much as 38 percent and have warned that relentless pay cuts were putting their constitutional position as guarantors of the court system under threat.

“We call on the state not to forget that it has the obligation of protecting the personal and operational independence of judges,” the group of associations said.

When the judges go on strike, then martial law is inevitable, because civil law will have lost the last remnants of its voice.  What can happen in Greece can happen elsewhere, even in the US.

Major Japanese firms have shut factories in China and urged expatriate workers on Monday to stay indoors ahead of what could be more angry protests over a territorial dispute that threatens to hurt trade ties between Asia’s two biggest economies.

China’s worst outbreak of anti-Japan sentiment in decades led to weekend demonstrations and violent attacks on well-known Japanese businesses such as car-makers Toyota and Honda, forcing frightened Japanese into hiding and prompting Chinese state media to warn that trade relations could now be in jeopardy.
