Homeland Security gains more power through new Obama executive order

Should disaster strike the U.S., the secretary of Homeland Security will be in charge of re-establishing and prioritizing communications to ensure the continuation of the federal government, according to a new executive order from President Barack Obama.

The executive order, signed on Friday, once again expands the powers of the Department of Homeland Security — this time to include the handling of communications during a national security event or natural disaster. The order also allows for DHS to re-establish communications “through the use of commercial, government, and privately owned communications resources, when appropriate.”

Russian Warships Sent on Maneuvers Near Syria

MOSCOW — Russia said on Tuesday that it had dispatched a flotilla of 11 warships to the eastern Mediterranean, some of which would dock in Syria. It would be the largest display of Russian military power in the region since the Syrian conflict began almost 17 months ago. Nearly half the ships were capable of carrying hundreds of marines.

The announcement appeared intended to punctuate Russia’s effort to position itself as an increasingly decisive broker in resolving the antigovernment uprising in Syria, Russia’s last ally in the Middle East and home to Tartus, its only foreign military base outside the former Soviet Union. The announcement also came a day after Russia said it was halting new shipments of weapons to the Syrian military until the conflict settled down.

Russia has occasionally sent naval vessels on maneuvers in the eastern Mediterranean, and it dispatched an aircraft-carrying battleship, the Admiral Kuznetsov, there for maneuvers with a few other vessels from December 2011 to February 2012. There were rumors in recent weeks that the Russians planned to deploy another naval force near Syria.

But the unusually large size of the force announced on Tuesday was considered a message, not just to the region but also to the United States and other nations supporting the rebels now trying to depose Syria’s president, Bashar al-Assad.

China Imports More Gold From Hong Kong In Five Months Than All Of UK’s Combined Gold Holdings

There are those who say gold may go to $10,000 or to $0, or somewhere in between; in a different universe, they would be the people furiously staring at the trees. For a quick look at the forest, we suggest readers have a glance at the chart below. It shows that just in the first five months of 2012 alone, China has imported more gold, a total of 315 tons, than all the official gold holdings of the UK, at 310.3 according to the WGC/IMF (a country which infamously sold 400 tons of gold by Gordon Brown at ~$275/ounce).

For the Nay-Sayers, This War Will Be Quite A Surprise

For those who insist that we will not go to war in the Middle East again, the coming events will be quite a shock.  The US already has Special Forces (Rangers, Pathfinders, SOAR, Delta, 10th Mountain, etc) in the AO, which is pre-requisite.  Now, we have made a clear statement to the world that the US is committed, by sending additional naval forces into the region…something that any nation with a satellite feed can see for themselves.

Turkey reportedly skirting sanctions by paying for Iranian oil in gold

As economic sanctions tighten around Iran, the Islamic Republic has turned to accepting alternative currencies as a way to receive payments for oil exports, the Financial Times reported on Monday.

The report focuses on a huge surge in gold exports from Turkey to Iran since March, the same time Iran was cut out of the SWIFT network, a global transaction system that handles payments for much of the petroleum industry, which forced Iran to seek alternative payment for its oil.

Although Turkey has reduced Iranian oil imports under EU and American pressure, Iran still provides 40 percent of Turkey’s petroleum, and between March and May, Turkey exported 58 tons of gold to the Islamic Republic, an increase of over 500%. According to the Financial Times, the gold exports were “sent in place of dollars for oil.”

Ugur Gurses, a financial analyst for the Turkish daily Radikal, said, “Iran converted $3 billion of its reserves into gold through financial operations with Turkey, bypassing sanctions.”

Speaking to Anadolu Agency on Monday, Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Taner Yildiz denied that Turkey pays for Iranian oil by gold, saying that oil payments are made through existing agreements between private companies in dollars and lira.

First they came for the MF Global customers, but I didn’t say anything because I didn’t clear MF Global

POSTED BY ANN BARNHARDT – JULY 9, AD 2012 11:22 PM MST
Uh, so do you believe me now? When I said, “Get the hell out,” do you understand that I meant to GET. THE. HELL. OUT.?

When I wrote in my Going Galt Letter that the problem was SYSTEMIC, do you now understand that I wasn’t just typing big, fancy words so that I could hear the soft pitter-pat of my keyboard?

When I said over and over again in interview after interview that the so-called regulatory system overseeing the futures industry was no such thing, but rather an evil, despicable mafia, administered by politicking psychopaths on the take, and staffed by affirmative action hires to provide plausible deniability and scapegoats, WERE YOU NOT LISTENING?

How did I see this coming? How could I NOT see this coming?

PFGBest, which used to be the old Alaron Trading, has stolen at least $220 million of customer funds, which is fully HALF the entire customer asset base. The firm’s owner attempted suicide this morning in the parking lot outside of the corporate HQ in Iowa.

While claiming to have over $200 million in bank accounts, it turned out that PFGBest only had $10 million at most. And they had been short NINETY-FIVE PERCENT of their seg funds for at least five months, and it may be closer to two years. The reportage on the timelines is very fuzzy.

Alright. Here’s where we call bullshit. Action item number one for any auditor is the independent confirmation of bank account balances. When little tiny me was audited both by the regulators AND for my annual Sarbanes-Oxley audit done by a local accounting firm, the first thing I had to do was sign the balance confirmation requests that the auditors then sent to Wells Fargo. This is the fundamental purpose of an audit. Make absolutely sure the flipping money is where they say it is.

In 2014, The Obama Dictatorship Will Be Complete

July 9, 2012 By
obamalaw In 2014, The Obama Dictatorship Will Be Complete

Though few Americans are aware of it, the unconscionable ObamaCare ruling of Chief Justice John Roberts stands to provide Barack Hussein Obama unlimited and fundamentally irrevocable power less than 2 years after the November election. For should he win, Obama will acquire the “legal” authority to select 15 individuals whose word will automatically become the law of the land.

Within the 2500 pages of the comically-named Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act is cached the 2014 establishment of the Independent Payment Advisory Board. Nominated exclusively by the president, the 15 members of the Board will ostensibly be tasked with “…prevent[ing] per-enrollee Medicare spending from growing faster than a specified target rate.” To accomplish this congressional mandate, ObamaCare has provided the Board with the authority to submit legislative “proposals” to Congress; proposals which will automatically become law unless both Houses AND the President agree upon and pass into law a substitute measure.

France sells bonds at negative interest rate, the Netherlands and Austria are downgraded

Who would invest their wealth at a negative rate of return? This happened today when French bonds were offered at a negative interest rate. Denmark increased their negative ROI last week. At this rate (pun intended), the European crisis will escalate very quickly. Egan Jones just downgraded the Netherlands and Austria to A with a negative outlook. Patriot Coal (PCX) filed for bankruptcy today.
From Reuters:

Alcoa Inc posted a second-quarter loss as a slump in aluminum prices to near two-year lows offset growing demand in the aerospace and automobile markets.

From Zerohedge:

South American Silver stock plummets as Bolivia announces it will nationalize one of world’s largest silver deposits. Of course, while this is good news for the actual precious metals as it means much more supply is coming offline, it is very bad for mining and extraction companies such as South American Silver, which stand to lose one after another property to a repeat of last year’s wave of nationalization. Indeed, at last check SAC.TO was down 27% today alone and plunging.
