Manufacturing in U.S. Shrinks at Fastest Pace in Four Years

Manufacturing in the U.S. unexpectedly contracted in May at the fastest pace in four years, indicating industry will provide scant support for the world’s largest economy.

The Institute for Supply Management’s factory index fell to 49 from the prior month’s 50.7, the Tempe, Arizona-based group’s report showed today. Fifty is the dividing line between growth and contraction, and last month’s reading was the lowest since June 2009. The median forecast of 81 economists surveyed by Bloomberg was 51.

Factory activity has waned since reaching an almost two-year high in February as across-the-board federal budget cuts took hold and overseas markets struggled to improve. At the same time, demand for automobiles, the rebound in residential construction and lean inventories may spark a pickup in orders and production in the second half of the year.

“Manufacturing is really stymied by slow corporate spending and government spending cutbacks,” said Guy LeBas, chief fixed-income strategist at Janney Montgomery Scott LLC in Philadelphia, who was the only analyst in the Bloomberg survey to correctly project the drop in the index. “Foreign demand is pretty anemic.”

European Propaganda On The Ropes – France Delays Unemployment Report

We can only imagine that the unemployment data must be so good that the French need a little more time to get positioned for the market’s exuberance. It seems the government’s statistical agency has proclaimed that:

  • *INSEE WON’T BE ABLE TO PROVIDE FULL 1Q FRENCH UNEMPLOYMENT DATA
  • *INSEE WAS SCHEDULED TO PUBLISH 1Q UNEMPLOYMENT DATA ON JUNE 6

Of course, we are sure this has nothing to do with the nation being near depression (as we discussed here and here most recently) and jobseekers at all-time record highsIt seems ‘when the news is bad, “lie”‘ is trumped by ‘when the news is dreadful, “don’t report it”‘.

What the markets are trying to tell us

Volatility is on the rise, liquidity is getting tougher in certain places, and anxiety is on the rise.

By Mohamed A. El-Erian

FORTUNE — Those trading in many market segments would have noticed a subtle change last week: Volatility is on the rise, liquidity is getting tougher in certain places, correlations are morphing, and anxiety has increased. Moreover, rather than impact all market segments simultaneously, such dislocations seem to be cascading gradually from the least liquid to the more liquid ones.

This could well be just a blip. After all, we have had similar episodes in the last two years. Alternatively, it could be indicative of a deeper change; and, if it is (as I suspect), the related underlying shifts could be secularly beneficial or could well signal more volatile times ahead.

The answers to these questions are consequential. They speak to whether investors should expect the strong rally in risk assets to resume or whether markets face the possibility of a correction; and they have an important influence on the prospects for growth and jobs.

So let us take a look at some of the key issues, starting with Japan:

18 Signs That Massive Economic Problems Are Erupting All Over The Planet

Volcano Eruption - Mount RedoubtThis is no time to be complacent.  Massive economic problems are erupting all over the globe, but most people seem to believe that everything is going to be just fine.  In fact, a whole bunch of recent polls and surveys show that the American people are starting to feel much better about how the U.S. economy is performing.  Unfortunately, the false prosperity that we are currently enjoying is not going to last much longer.  Just look at what is happening in Europe.  The eurozone is now in the midst of the longest recession that it has ever experienced.  Just look at what is happening over in Asia.  Economic growth in India is the lowest that it has been in a decade and the Japanese financial system is beginning to spin wildly out of control.  One of the only places on the entire planet where serious economic problems have not already erupted is in the United States, and that is only because we have “kicked the can down the road” by recklessly printing money and by borrowing money at an unprecedented rate.  Unfortunately, the “sugar high” produced by those foolish measures is starting to wear off.  We are going to experience a massive amount of economic pain along with the rest of the world – it is just a matter of time.

But for the moment, there are a lot of skeptics out there.

For the moment, there are a lot of people that are declaring that the problems of the past have been fixed and that we are heading for incredibly bright economic times ahead.

Unfortunately, those people appear to be purposely ignoring the economic horror that is breaking out all over the globe.

The following are 18 signs that massive economic problems are erupting all over the planet…

“Accidents” to Ahmadinejad, Jalili were attempted assassinations

Emergency landing of Ahmadinejad's helicopter

Emergency landing of Ahmadinejad’s helicopter

Twelve days before Iran’s presidential election, stubborn rumors were making the rounds that two “accidents” which took place Sunday, June 2, were in fact attempts on the lives of outgoing Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and a leading presidential hopeful, Iran’s senior nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili. Both escaped unhurt. The rumors pointed the finger of suspicion at supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei or his underlings possibly acting on their own.

The ayatollah’s insiders are said to fear Ahmadinejad is plotting an emergency for bringing the masses out on the streets in order to force the postponement of the June 14 election. He would then stay on as president until the dust settled.

In the overheated, pre-election atmosphere in Tehran, government circles are extra jittery over the apparently irrepressible wave of Turkish popular dissent against the Islamist government of Tayyip Erdogan. They are concerned lest the tumult spill over into Iran and target the ayatollah’s authority.

Ahmadinejad and a large party of officials were on the way Sunday to inaugurating Iran’s longest tunnel under the Alborz Mountains the northeaster province of Mazandaran, when their helicopter went into a tail spin. The pilot made a safe emergency landing.

The accident could have been genuine: Iran’s air fleet is in a bad state of maintenance because Tehran is unable to get hold of spare parts due to sanctions and a shortage of foreign currency. Replacement parts are either roughly improvised at home or bought from questionable sources in China or the Ukraine. But the wording of the communiqué released by Ahmadinejad’s office after the event was found suggestive in Gulf capitals and Washington: It was described as “an unspecified accident” rather than a technical breakdown.

Will Obama Sign UN Arms Trade Treaty Today?

bear

Despite a Senate amendment blocking the treaty, President Barack Obama plans to sign the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty on June 3rd. ~ Daniel Jackson

Millions of Americans have expressed fear over the possible passing of the UN small arms treaty with many organizations and news outlets coming to the conclusion that, if passed, the treaty could lead to a massive international registry of all guns.

Breitbart.com reported:

This treaty is ostensibly aimed at putting an end to gun trafficking across international boundaries, and both Breitbart News and the NRA have argued that it will eventually require an international gun registry in order to be enforceable.

The ATT also provides the executive branch of our government with broad powers for controlling which guns do and don’t come into the country, and includes ambiguous language that a gun-control-friendly administration can use to its advantage.

IRANIAN GENERAL WARNS OF BIO-WARFARE

Viruses can be turned into easily concealed weapons with high epidemic powers that could contaminate food, water and animals, Iran has warned.

Gen. Gholamreza Jalali, head of Iran’s Passive Defense Organization, in a recent event discussing defensive and offensive measures for cyber-attacks and viruses, talked about the strategic importance of using viruses as weapons to contaminate an environment, according to AsrIran, a media outlet of the Islamic Republic.

“Biological viruses are extremely clever and have the capability to distinguish their environment. These viruses can only be recognized in labs,” he said, stressing that these agents are easily hidden in the environment and can cause widespread epidemics.

Jalali said that viruses, parasites, botanical poisons and animal poisons are elements that can be used in biological warfare.

“The environmental threats include humans, domesticated animals, poultry, environment, natural resources, food industry and drinking water,” he said, identifying seven ways a biological agent could strike.

The Nikkei opened down 1.62% and quickly fell 3% in the opening minutes as expected. The US market collapse at the close of trading on Friday (May 31, 2013) is continuing overseas. Gold and silver are both slightly up but it is too early to see if this trend will continue through the Monday trading session.

Gold Trader: “Stock Market May Crash 10-20% In Next 5-10 Days, Will Create Setup For Bubble Phase In Gold”

When asked why he’s [technical gold trader Gary Savage] expecting a crash of such magnitude to occur, Gary replied, “If you look at [a] long-term market chart…you can see that at the recent peak, [it] was stretched further above the 200 day moving average then it’s ever been in the last 30 or 40 years. So the forces of regression are going to be extremely powerful…We’re probably going to [cut] right through the 200 day moving average and [it] may make the 2011 correction look small [in comparison].”

This fragile equities market plays a key role in determining gold’s next move according to Gary, in that, “When it breaks, the Fed is going to freak out, [and] they’re going to double, triple, and quadruple down on QE to try and pump stocks back up, [and] that liquidity…[is] going to find something else…I don’t believe it’s going to pump up a double parabola in stocks…[It’s] going to look for something that’s undervalued…and that right now is commodities in general, more specifically—gold.”

As to the consequences of gold being driven down so far when compared to this blow-off in equities, Gary stated that, “Regression to the mean not only works on the upside, but also on the downside, and gold is in the mirror position of the stock market—it’s stretched extremely far below the 200 day moving average. So when [the] regression occurs, it’s going to be an extremely violent move back towards the 200 day moving average, and like I said, I think what will trigger this [move in gold], will be the stock market crash, the Fed, and the central banks’ response to [the] unraveling…[it’s] what I imagine would happen before the bubble phase begins.

Middle East Genocide

Muslims set fire to a Copt Christian church in Cairo.

We are witnesses to murder, and our governments are accomplices. The relentless destruction of the last remnants of the Middle East’s Judeo-Christian civilization is well under way. And we are silent.

Captives of political correctness, our governments cater to radical immigrant tantrums as our leaders contort the truth to deny the existence of Islamist terrorism. Meanwhile, our Middle Eastern “allies” and foes alike eradicate thousands of years of Jewish and Christian heritage. Our diplomats treat the persecution as a minor embarrassment, best ignored.

The banishments and butchery aren’t new, but the breakdown of the last rotting order in the wake of the “Arab Spring” has empowered psychotic fanatics who do not even value the lives of the faithful, let alone the lives of unbelievers. This is the end-game, the final persecution of Christians clinging to lands they’ve called home for 2,000 years. Except for Israel and the rarest exceptions elsewhere, Jews are already gone from the realms that nurtured them since the early years of their faith.

A thousand years ago, there were more Christians in the Middle East than in Europe, and Jewish communities prospered from the Nile to the Tigris. Even a century ago, more than 20% of the region’s population was Christian, and Jews still adorned Arab cities with their talents.
