The 34 Words That May Have Caused Today’s Crash In Stocks

There is much consternation about what triggered today’s rapid escalation of selling pressure in US stocks. As the evening wends on and traders sip their Absinthe, it appears an embargoed record of the Fed’s Advisory Panel minutes was at least a major concern as it raised the very real specter that those in charge are concerned at the monster they have created:

“There is also concern about the possibility of a breakout of inflation, although current inflation risk is not considered unmanageable, and of an unsustainable bubble in equity and fixed-income markets given current prices.”

Unsustainable bubble“? And this not from some fringe blog but… bankers?

And some bonus words, which have to be read to be believed:

Uncertainty exists about how markets will reestablish normal valuations when the Fed withdraws from the market. It will likely be difficult to unwind policy accommodation, and the end of monetary easing may be painful for consumers and businesses. Given the Fed’s balance sheet increase of approximately $2.5 trillion since 2008, the Fed may now be perceived as integral to the housing finance system.

‘Moral Monday’ protests just the price of government

'Moral Monday' arrestOver the four weeks of “Moral Monday” protests at the North Carolina state legislative building this spring, 153 people have been arrested. Five others were arrested during a May Day protest.

The arrests have all started much the same way, with crowds bustling into the atrium between two giant sets of brass doors marking the entrance to the state House and Senate chambers. They sing, they chant, they hear testimony from some of those gathered. During that time, General Assembly Police Chief Jeff Weaver uses a bullhorn to warn the protesters that they are trespassing and in jeopardy of being arrested.

Organized by the NAACP, churches, union groups and liberal organizations, the “Moral Monday” protests are meant to push back against the policies of the Republican-controlled General Assembly. Those who have spoken during the near-weekly gatherings have cited topics including budget cuts to education, abortion access, immigrant rights, voting law changes and health care policy.

  • April 29: 17 Arrested
  • May 6: 30 Arrested
  • May 13: 49 Arrested
  • May 20: 57 Arrested

Dow Dumps 270 Points Intraday To Biggest 2-Week Drop In Six Months

The Dow Jones Utility Index is down 35% in the last two weeks – the largest drop since March 2009. Across the board, what looked like being a normal BTFD day around midday, equity markets were monkey-hammered lowered with the S&P 500’s worst 2-week run in 6 months. The Dow dropped over 270 points intraday (and 400 from its Monday highs) – attributed to a large month-end sell-side imbalance. Equity markets appear to be playing catch-down to credit’s warning messages (though stocks are only down 1% from Friday’s close, it feels like more as they are -2.5% to 3% from the highs). JPY strengthened into the equity sell-off and commodities all legged lower (with WTI -2.5% on the week and Gold unch) even as the USD weakened 0.5% on the week. The reality of the one-way trade was very evident. Treasuries came well off their worst levels of the day but remain 11-14bps higher in yield on the week. VIX, which had also been sending its warning messages, smashed 1.75 vols higher to 16.25%. It seems a lot will be reflecting on the Dow/NKY convergence and the behavior in Japan this week as they note there was no bounce at all in today’s closing crash.

Dow down over 400 points from its Monday highs…

U.S. Treasury Is Down to One Day of Cash

Economist John Williams says the Federal bank account at the US Treasury Department is down to just one-day’s estimated outlay, a dire situation that can only be papered over for a short time. Williams cites the May 28 Daily Treasury Statement showing the US Treasury has an operating cash balance of ~$16 billion which is roughly one day’s average cash outlay of about $17 billion.

Williams paints reality over the fantasies created by the federal government in his latest commentary (#527). At his website Williams shadows government-issued economic statistics, erasing the false illusions created to make it sound like the economy is in recovery mode.

Williams shows the annual rate of inflation (buying power of the dollar) is ~9.3% rather than 2.4%, unemployment is more like 22% rather than 8% and the Gross Domestic Product, the measure of the production of goods and services, is actually in decline.

By papering over the real numbers, government has bought some time, but it won’t last long according to Williams.

The US government can’t control foreign holders of US IOUs (US Treasury Bonds) who have a growing perception they will never be paid back on the trillions of dollars of debt owed them. Foreign holders of US Treasury bills can sell them off at a loss to others.

The amount those T-bonds are discounted is the amount the US dollar will be valued at in the world marketplace. At that point, the US faces a default on its obligations to pay back lenders.

As American as Apple Pie the Muslim Brotherhood

Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi’s (or Mursi’s) children were born in the United States, and are therefore American citizens. Now an Egyptian lawyer has filed suit to have their dual citizenship revoked. As he says, “The Muslim Brotherhood is publicly known to be against America, Zionism and Israel. Is it possible for the president’s children to be American citizens? America the main supporter of Zionism!”

Will the kids have to give up their coveted U.S. passports? It will be interesting to see how this one pans out.

According to Al Arabiya:

U.S. Citizenship for Mursi’s Children ‘Threatens Security, ‘ Lawyer Says

An Egyptian court Thursday decided to postpone a case seeking to strip President Mohammed Mursi’s son and daughter of their U.S. citizenship.

The lawyer who filed the suit claims their dual nationality “threatens Egypt’s national security.”

South Korea Is Latest To Suspend US Wheat Imports In Aftermath Of Monsanto Rogue Wheat Discovery

As a reminder, recently news broke out that a rogue genetically modified strain of wheat developed by Monsanto, had been found in an Oregon field late last month. But while modified food has long been a diet staple, this particular breed was the first discovery of an unapproved strain, and what made things worse is the lack of any information how the rogue grain had escape from a field trial a decade ago. As Reuters reports, “even after weeks of investigation, experts are baffled as to how the seed survived for years after Monsanto had ceased all field tests of the product. It was found in a field growing a different type of wheat than Monsanto’s strain, far from areas used for field tests, according to an Oregon State University wheat researcher who tested the strain.”

The USDA was quick to deny any suggestion of public danger:

The USDA said the GM wheat found in Oregon posed no threat to human health, and also said there was no evidence that the grain had entered the commercial supply chain.

But the discovery threatens to stoke consumer outcry over the possible risk of cross-contaminating natural products with genetically altered foods, and may embolden critics who say U.S. regulation of GMO products is lax.

Moscow‘s smoke screen obscures Assad’s next Syrian war moves

Russian MiG-29M2 fighter-bomber

Russian MiG-29M2 fighter-bomber

On minute, Russian spokesmen declare that Moscow is only filling standing contracts with Syria for the sale of weapons, i.e. – S-300 anti-air missiles; the next, that delivery will take place only in the second quarter of 2014 (ahead of Syria’s presidential election). Then, after those spokesmen previously declared that Russia would only fill outstanding arms contracts, Serge Korotkov, head of the MiG company came out with the news Friday, May 31, that a Syrian delegation was in Moscow to discuss “a new contract” for the sale of “more than 10” MiG-29 M/M2 fighters.

According to DEBKAfile’s military sources, this Russian fighter-bomber is designed to operate in complex electronic jamming environments. It is therefore just what the Syrian army lacks for overcoming the Israeli Air Force’s ability to disable Syria’s Russian-made electronic warfare systems.

Moscow is therefore offering to provide Bashar Assad and his air force with a key resource for delivering on the statement he made in a TV interview Thursday, May 30: “We have informed all foreign parties that we will retaliate against any future Israeli attack.”

Our military and Russian sources say that the conflicting Russian statements on weapons sales to Damascus have two motives:

Protests in Turkey

Istanbul, Turkey (CNN) — Police fired tear gas and water cannons at protesters camped out in Istanbul’s main commercial district early Friday.
Officers in riot gear entered the Taksim Gezi Park, the site of a four-day-long protest against an urbanization project that would turn the park into a shopping mall.
Demonstrators also oppose plans to rebuild historic barracks from the time of the Ottoman Empire and create a shopping arcade out of them.
Protesters trying to block the bulldozers chanted slogans before police uprooted them from the park.
Demonstrators and police clashed as they moved to the main commercial street, with protestors throwing bottles, setting up barricades and burning trash in the middle of the street.

Small groups of protestors also clashed with police in side streets.

Police also deployed tear gas in an attempt to disperse protesters on Thursday. Officers cleared out their tents and sleeping bags but failed to end to the sit-in.

While we have heard from the Turkish government a reasonable amount in the last year, this is the first we have heard from the Turkish people… not surprising, considering that Turkey is a rather repressive regime when it comes to public protests.

But now, that repressive approach may be backfiring – there has been heavy use of water cannons by Turkish police in response to the protests over the last three days, which have already resulted in multiple injuries, and possibly a death earlier today. Additional protest activities are being planned through the evening and night tonight according to many social media sources, and the momentum and initiative are with the protesters at present. If continued on this track, Turkey may be in for a social meltdown reminiscent of Egypt.

Here is video of the alleged death by water cannon –

It’s really amazing how every US ally seems to be having economic problems and social unrest in the last 2 years… correlation?

All Time Record Gold Transactions Reported By LBMA

The precious metals have been weak again in May with gold falling 4.4% despite this weeks’ recovery. Silver is down 7% and platinum by 2.6%. Palladium has recovered from recent weakness and those who accumulated on weakness are set for the best month since November after it surged 6.6% in May.

Weakness in gold and silver is leading to robust demand internationally as store of value buyers accumulate gold and silver on this dip. This is particularly the case in Asia where premiums remain robust and supply demand imbalances remain.

The persistent strong demand of this week began on the price falls in April. This demand is clearly seen in the London gold and silver trading data released by the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) yesterday.

London gold trading jumped to a 20 month high in April and silver volumes surged 25% after the price falls led to an increase in physical buying, the LBMA said in a report.

Trading in gold averaged 24.1 million ounces a day in the London market, the most for any month since gold reached record nominal highs in August 2011, the LBMA said in a statement yesterday as reported by Bloomberg.

The 24.1 million ounces was a 10% increase on March when 21.8 million ounces a day were traded.
