Our Town Meetings are always active affairs. Join us for our session on “Gun Violence in America: What Can or Should Be Done in Media, Politics and Mental Health” on Tuesday, May 28, at 7:30 p.m.

In the aftermath of Sandy Hook there has been a great deal of speculation as to what is contributing to the upswing in mass shootings and violence in the public arena. Three areas have been targeted specifically: the lack of affordable mental health care, violence in the media, and gun legislation.

Our panel includes: WRAL anchor and reporter David Crabtree,  psychiatrist, humanist and philanthropist Dr. Assad Meymandi, Congressman David Price, representing North Carolina’s 4th District. As always, we thank our co-moderators, Clay Stalnaker and Mamie Potter.

Russia, Greece, Turkey, Other Central Banks Buy Gold; China’s PBOC Buying?

China’s reserves rose 721% from 2004 through 2012, while the combined total among Brazil, Russia and India rose about 400% to $1.1 trillion.

Continuing diversification into gold from the huge foreign exchange reserves by the People’s Bank of China and other central banks is a primary pillar which will support gold and should contribute to higher prices in the coming years.

We are confident that the PBOC is quietly accumulating gold and we expect another announcement from the PBOC, possibly this year, when they again disclose to the market that they drastically increased their gold reserves – possibly from 1,054 tonnes to between 2,000 and 3,000 tonnes.

States becoming “Ground Zero” for gun legislation – Doug Hagmann

One popular scene from And Justice For All played out almost verbatim during an April 30, 2013 meeting of the New Jersey State Law and Public Safety Committee when committee chairman New Jersey State Senator Donald Norcross shouted to one constituent, identified as New Jersey resident James Kaleda “You’re out of order!” Almost as if he was following the script written for Al Pacino, James Kaleda retorted “this meeting is out of order!” It was, perhaps, the most fitting assertion during an otherwise uneventful four-hour long session where it appeared that the passage of seven-(7) new restrictive state gun control measures was decided long before the hearings began.

Exactly what egregious offense did Mr. Kaleda commit that compelled Senator Norcross to shut off his microphone and have him physically escorted from the public meeting? Some might contend that it’s a bit difficult to tell, but it seemed that a simple utterance of the words “gun control” might have played a part. It appears that Senator Norcross, acting with the imprimatur of the federal government to disarm his law-abiding constituents, has also been emboldened to forcibly disallow discordant discussion despite its intellectual value. And there it is, ladies and gentlemen, a textbook example of the inextricable connection between our right to bear arms and our right to free speech.

FSA Sources said that dozens of people in Damascus and in the city of Harsta were injured by inhaling toxic gases. The sources said that an attack by President Bashar Assad’s forces caused dozens of cases of suffocation.

Free Syrian Army claimed that the past few hours, an attack was carried out using chemical weapons against rebel forces in Harsta.

Catholic Bishops Committee Chair: Obama’s Drone Policies ‘Seem to Violate the Law of War’

The chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops Committee on International Justice and Peace is questioning the morality and lawfulness of President Obama’s policy for using drones.

Roman Catholic Bishop Richard E. Pates of Des Moines has sent a letter to White House National Security Adviser Thomas Donilon as well as to the chairmen and ranking members of the congressional committees dealing with national security issues arguing in his capacity as chairman of the USCCB Committee on International Justice and Peace that the administration’s policies for using armed drones in its counter-terrorism efforts “seem to violate the law of war, international human rights law, and moral norms.”

Bishop Pates sent the letters on May 17 and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops released them on May 21. That was two days before Obama delivered a major speech at the National Defense University in which he sought to defend and explain his drones policy, while conceding that the use of this new technology “raises profound questions–about who is targeted, and why; about civilian casualties, and the risk of creating new enemies; about the legality of such strikes under U.S. and international law; about accountability and morality.”

Residents of Israel’s northernmost town of Metula were roused before dawn Monday, May 27 by an exploding rocket fired from the Lebanese town of Marjayoun about 10 kilometers north of the border. It landed on open ground, causing no casualties or damage. DEBKAfile’s military sources report: Just 48 hours after Hassan Nasrallah’s war speech, Hizballah, Iran’s proxy, had joined thewar of attrition President Assad has directed against Israel from the Golan.

The IDF has so far made no mention of the widely reported rocket attack although Lebanese media said an Israeli drone was hovering over the Marjayoun area.

Metula was attacked the day after three Grad missiles were fired from a point east of Mt Lebanon to explode in the Hizballah-controlled Dahiya district of Beirut, injuring five people and causing some damage.

It was fired by local Sunni elements sympathetic to the Syrian rebels. The Shiite Hizballah decided to retaliate against northern Israel – for a reason. It made clear that the position laid out by Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon that “Israel is not involved in the Syrian war” is not reciprocated either by Syrian President Bashar Assad or Hizballah’s leader Hassan Nasrallah.

Nasrallah’s strategy in the face of domestic criticism of his heavy military commitment to Assad is to demonstrate that the troops he sent to fight in the Shiite-Sunni conflict raging in Syria are in fact waging war on the common enemy, the Jewish state.

Syrian cyber attack on Haifa water system thwarted

National R&D Council chairman Prof. Yitzhak Ben-Israel has revealed that, two weeks ago, Syria tried and failed to launch a cyber attack on Haifa’s water system. Speaking at the Shabatarbut Beersheva festival, he said that the attack was by the Syrian Electronic Army. Ben-Israel, who established Israel’s cyber defense system, said that that hundreds of attacks were made every minute against Israel’s critical infrastructures, such as the electricity grid, water, Israel Railways, and Tel Aviv Stock Exchange (TASE). He cited a study by Kasperky Lab, which said, “There are 200,000 new viruses every day.

Commenting on Israeli concern that Syrian chemical weapons would end up in terrorists’ hands, Ben-Israel said, “So long as we face Syria, there is equilibrium and everyone knows the balance of forces. Even if they have sophisticated weapons, they think eight times before using them.” He said that Israel was not worried about the missiles, but, “our problem is the transfer of arms to other parties, first to Hezbollah, and second, Syria is disintegrating, and the question is, who will get their hands on these weapons.”

Iran Equips IRGC with Large Numbers of Ground-to-Ground Missile Launchers

The Iranian Defense Ministry on Sunday supplied large numbers of long-range ground-to-ground missile launchers to the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC).

he launchers were supplied to the IRGC’s Aerospace Force in a special ceremony attended by Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi and Commander of the IRGC Aerospace Force Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh.

The ceremony was held on the occasion of the anniversary of the liberation of Khorramshahr city from Iraqi occupation during the eight-year Iraqi imposed war on Iran in the 1980s (May 24).

Addressing the ceremony, Vahidi said that the delivery of such a large number of missile launchers demonstrates the Islamic Republic of Iran’s self-sufficiency in designing and building the strategic system and shows the Iranian Armed Forces’ massive firepower and their ability to give a crushing response to the enemy.

He added that the Iranian defense industries are now capable of producing different home-made weapons and military systems in aerospace, naval, air, ground, electronic and optic fields.

Earlier this month, the defense ministry started mass-production of a highly mobile home-made air-defense system.

The production line of the new system, Herz (Protector) 9, was inaugurated in a special ceremony attended by Vahidi on the occasion of Khorramshahr liberation anniversary.

Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add ‘within the limits of the law’ because law is often but the tyrant’s will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual.

Every government degenerates when trusted to the rulers of the people alone. The people themselves are its only safe depositories.

The natural progress of things is for government to gain ground and for liberty to yield.

If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around them will deprive the people of all property until their children wake up homeless on the continent their Fathers conquered.

The Chart That The BoJ Is Most Worried About

Until the last few days, the attention of the mainstream business media has been on how ‘wonderful’ Japan’s policy prescription must be since its stock market is soaring at a record pace. The reality is that the far bigger JGB market has been crumbling. As we explained here, this is a major problem for the bubble-blowers, as the extreme volatility (VaR shock) that the Japanese Government Bond market has been through in the last few weeks has some very large and painful consequences, that as yet, have not been discussed widely. The term ‘shadow banking’ has been one ZH readers are by now extremely familiar with as we have discussed this as the panacea of unseen leverage (most recently in Europe and China) for years; the funding markets in Japan, so heavily reliant on JGB repo for short-term liquidity and the efficient functioning of two-way markets in the bonds, are hitting a wall. As JPMorgan notes, the number of JGB ‘fails’ – where a repo deal breaks down – has more than doubled in the last week. For a market that represents 40% of the total Japanese money-market, this will be a critical area to watch for a JGB waterfall.
