Gun bill clears Senate hurdle as filibuster falls short

Controversial gun legislation cleared a key Senate hurdle Thursday, as lawmakers voted 68-31 to start debate on the package which includes expanded background checks and new penalties for gun trafficking.

Senate Democrats, joined by a few Republicans, were able to overcome an attempted filibuster by more than a dozen senators opposed to the current bill. Those senators could still slow-walk the debate, but the Senate will ultimately begin votes on amendments — one of which is considered crucial to winning support for a final vote.

The amendment likely to be at the front of the line is one from Sens. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and Pat Toomey, R-Pa., which would scale back the call for universal background checks. The plan would expand checks to gun-show and Internet sales, but exempt certain personal transactions.

US, S. Korea on top alert as North missile spotted in launch position

North Korean Musudan missile

North Korean Musudan missile

The United States and South Korean armed forces went on the highest level of alert – Watchcon 2 – Thursday, April 11, ready for multiple launches after  at least one North Korean ballistic Musudan missile was sighted fueled and ready to launch at any moment on the country’s eastern coast.  With an estimated range of more 3,400 kilometers, it places US bases in Guam and the Okinawa islands within range as well as South Korea and Japan.

According to a senior US defense official in Washington, the floating SBX X-band radar is in position for tracking missiles fired by Pyongyang. South Korean officials, commenting on the apparent movement of several ballistic missiles on North Korea’s east coast, report that this is an apparent attempt to confuse intelligence monitoring by the US, Japan and South Korea.

The US and Japan, which earlier deployed Patriot interceptors in Tokyo, have said that any missile would be intercepted if it showed signs of heading for the United States or Japan. But neither mentioned a US military target or the possibility of a missile flying over Japan to land in the Pacific Ocean.

Military sources in Washington point to the US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel’s warning Wednesday that North Korea is “skating very close to a dangerous line” with its bellicose rhetoric on nuclear arms, and his stress on America’s ability to protect itself and its allies, as the most serious statement to come from the Obama administration so far. It was the first warning of a US military response to a North Korean missile launch.

Wind Him Up, Move Him Out

Obama is meeting “the heads of the world’s biggest banks” today to receive his marching orders. Since Obama’s spokesman “declined to provide details about the agenda”, we will have to once again wait and see what the powers that be have in store for the little people.

Obama Meets With Blankfein, Dimon and Moynihan Today

President Barack Obama is meeting today with the heads of the world’s biggest banks, including Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (GS)’s Lloyd C. Blankfein and JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM)’s Jamie Dimon, people briefed on the plans said.

The attendees, who also include Bank of America Corp. (BAC)’s Brian T. Moynihan and Citigroup Inc. (C)’s Michael Corbat, are in Washington for the Financial Services Forum’s quarterly meeting, said the people, who requested anonymity because the meeting is private. More than a dozen of the trade organization’s 19 members are scheduled to meet at the White House with administration officials, one person said.

The administration disclosed the meeting on Obama’s daily schedule late yesterday without sharing details about who will be there. Josh Earnest, an Obama spokesman, declined to provide details about the agenda, and Laena Fallon, a spokeswoman for the Forum, declined to comment.

Are You On the Government’s List?

Is there a list of people already made that the government will use as the basis for detaining people of interest? Yes. At a large meeting of so called Tea Party leaders, one individual stated that his cousin in Charlotte who works for the sheriff’s office had checked on me (illegally) with the federal government and that I was on this “list”. My response was anyone in that room who was not on the list, was not doing their job. Whether I am on the government’s list, the SPLC’s list or the local sheriff’s list is not important. What is important is why people are on these lists. Such as being a Christian, a veteran, a concealed carry permit holder or a Constitutionalist.

Am I surprised that Missouri is giving information to the federal government? Is anyone?

The time to come to terms with reality is now and actually has been here for some time. Will you cower in fear from corrupt politicians and law enforcement or will you stand tall with Honor? It is a simple question.

Highway patrol gave feds Missouri weapon permits data

The Missouri State Highway Patrol has twice turned over the entire list of Missouri concealed weapon permit holders to federal authorities, most recently in January, Sen. Kurt Schaefer said Wednesday.

Questioning in the Senate Appropriations Committee revealed that on two occasions, in November 2011 and again in January, the patrol asked for and received the full list from the state Division of Motor Vehicle and Driver Licensing. Schaefer later met in his office with Col. Ron Replogle, superintendent of the patrol.

ACTION ALERT-HB786-Licenses for illegals in NC

Concerned citizens and Immigration Reformers,

It’s official……. North Carolina House Republicans have introduced legislation today in the state General Assembly to give all illegal immigrants in North Carolina a driver’s license. The Bill is HB786. They are calling it a driver’s permit, but outside of not being able to vote with it, it is in fact a driver’s license. They also have added language in this bill that seems to gut the earlier E-Verify bill to keep illegals from getting jobs belonging to citizens. They added some small enforcement measures, but that is all for naught by giving illegals the legal right to drive. And basically they have said in the bill that local law enforcement won’t touch illegals if they have one of these driver’s licenses unless and until after they commit crimes. All but the worst illegal alien criminals will get a NC driver’s license. With all of their aliases, which of the illegal immigrants multiple names will they check? And get this, to insult every citizen’s intelligence, they are calling this legislation the “Reclaim NC Act”.

See below to take initial action. This is SERIOUS. We need the help of all citizens!

The Republican sponsors claimed that they talked to all “stakeholders” before writing the legislation. I know for a fact that other than NC LISTEN and NC FIRE, they only talked to cheap labor industry folks and believe it or not, they took input from several illegal immigrant advocacy groups. This was an apparent attempt to curry favor in a futile attempt to get votes down the road….. I asked the sponsors of this bill if they actually talked to any unemployed citizens about their bill…….there was silence. I guess unemployed citizens aren’t really stakeholders?

Will It Be War?

war

Trillions of dollars of debts will be restructured and millions of financially prudent savers will lose large percentages of their real purchasing power at exactly the wrong time in their lives. Again, the world will not end, but the social fabric of the profligate nations will be stretched and in some cases torn. Sadly, looking back through economic history, all too often war is the manifestation of simple economic entropy played to its logical conclusion. We believe that war is an inevitable consequence of the current global economic situation.

This is why you don’t want to move gold yourself…

A few days ago, Italian authorities stopped a man who was making his way across the border into Switzerland with his wife and three children.

They searched his car and found, literally, a ton of gold bars hidden in a floorboard storage compartment.

Needless to say, the gold was confiscated, the car was impounded, and the man was arrested, despite the fact that it’s perfectly legal to own and transport gold.

Now, the European Union does require that ‘cash’ in excess of 10,000 euros be declared when crossing borders.

Yet article II of EC regulation 1889/2005 states that “cash” for the purposes of declaration includes legal tender currency plus monetary instruments in bearer form– travelers cheques, promissory notes, bearer bonds, and stock certificates. Not gold. And certainly not gold bars.

So the man was actually well within his legal rights. But it didn’t matter. They nabbed him on ‘suspicion of money laundering.’

As one of the most bankrupt European Union member states, Italy is going down a very dangerous road indeed. They’ve already imposed bank withdrawal restrictions, raised taxes, and openly flirted with bank nationalization.

Indoctrination to Start at Four?

I must have missed the part in the Constitution that requires me to pay for someone else’s child care. Don’t be fooled: this is a means to start indoctrinating our children at an earlier age.

Obama: Put Nation’s 4-Year-Olds in ‘Public Preschool;’ Will Save on ‘Child-Care Costs’

In the message he issued along with his budget proposal on Wednesday morning, President Barack Obama said he wants to see 4-year-old children in the United States enrolled in public schools.

Obama said America needs to start enrolling 4-year-olds to make sure the children are “better prepared for the demands of the global economy” and to help parents save on “child-care costs.”

After saying the United States needs to “equip our citizens with the skills and training” to fill jobs in manufacturing, energy and infrastructure, Obama said, “And that has to start at the earliest possible age.”

For Those Who Think An Economic Crash Will Not Come Quickly…

Today’s chart for Bitcoin:

BitCrash Continues: Down 40% And Dumping

Time to rename it BitCrash… or will it stage an amazing recovery? Alas, for this particular bubble, there are no NYSE circuit breakers nor is there a Federal Reserve-mandated “plunge protection team.” And why should there be? The central banks hate all currency alternatives. Firehats: on, especially since the volume is still relatively lite.

Man dies after Raleigh police use stun gun on him

Raleigh police crime scene

Police say a man who died near Raleigh’s Five Points neighborhood Wednesday morning died after authorities used a stun gun to try to bring him under control.

Officers were called to the intersection of Wiggs and Mial streets behind Emmanuel Baptist Church around 4 a.m. after they received a report of a naked man in the street, according to police spokesman Jim Sughrue said.

“The subject became physically aggressive in his dealings with officers, and a conducted-energy device was deployed,” Sughrue said. “The subject subsequently collapsed and was later pronounced deceased at the scene.”
