Euro Banking System On The Verge Of Collapse

News came out yesterday that all Cypriot banks will continue to be closed until at least next Tuesday and may remain closed permanently.

Last week, the European Central Bank threatened to cut the Emergency Liquidity Assistance which Cyprus had been receiving unless Cyprus’ major banks implemented legislation which would “tax” all investors who have accounts in Cypriot banks an amount up to 9.9 percent of their total deposits. The tax was rejected by the Cyprus parliament on Tuesday.

The ECB proposal led to runs on Cypriot banks and to angry protests, including from Russia’s Vladimir Putin, as many Russians have money in those banks. Cyprus is a more than thousand year-old banking center which has facilitated trade in the region for centuries, so this situation is of great interest to many people worldwide including a massive amount of shipping companies who use Cyprus as their financial center.

Nigel Farage is a British politician and leader of the UK Independence Party (UKIP) since 2010 and, since 1999, he has been a Member of the European Parliament for South East England. He came out with a scathing rebuke of the ECB’s plans.

In his first TV appearance since the Cypriot wealth tax was announced, he stated that in all his years and all his experience of the desperation of the European Union’s leadership “never did [he] think they would resort to stealing money from people’s savings accounts.”

Coming to a Bank Near You

What would you do if the banks are closed for a bank holiday, the ability to withdraw money is limited and credit cards are not accepted. Ask the people in Cyprus.

David DeGerolamo

Pictures From A Cyprus ATM Line

For a few days, the people of Cyprus were calm, quietly and orderly accepting the unreality of the levy being imposed upon them – incredulous that it was even possible. As we reach the 4th day of bank closures, amid rolling rumors and ECB threats, it appears the people have reached a tipping point as this series of images from Cyprus ATM lines indicates – the bank-jog has arrived. When will it become a full blown sprint?

A Moral and Virtuous People

Dr. Kermit Gosnell, charged with 7 counts of first-degree murder, killing babies reportedly born alive at his abortion office in West Philadelphia, Pa. (AP)

A republic will only stand if the people are moral and virtuous. Most people have never heard this admonition from our founding fathers. Since we have no morality at the highest levels of government (thank you Bill Clinton, Weiner, Menendez, …), we have do not have morality at all levels of society. We can blame the politicians, our church leadership or ourselves but without any action, we see the consequences below.

Our abortions in this country dwarf the Holocaust or the Holomador combined. Five times over. Since there are no consequences to these actions, nothing changes. Does anyone really believe that there will be no consequences to this genocide? Does anyone really believe that the death panels will have no consequences?

GM CEO HEADS TO CAPITOL HILL AS BAILOUT SETTLEMENT TALKS FALL APART

2014 Corvette Stingray / AP

General Motors CEO Daniel Akerson plans to roll up to Capitol Hill Thursday in a flashy new Corvette Stingray less than 24 hours after settlement talks fell apart in a lawsuit that could cost GM at least $1 billion–and add to the nearly $20 billion taxpayers have already lost on the 2009 bailout.

GM spokeswoman Heather Rosenker expects a “full house” when Akerson debuts the 450 horsepower sports car at the Capitol Hill Club. The CEO then plans to update the bipartisan gathering on the state of GM in a closed-door meeting.

“We update stakeholders just like members of congress as part of our normal operating procedure,” Rosenker said. “We’ve already put the bailout behind us because we’re doing the best we’ve ever done.”

Rosenker did not respond to follow up requests regarding the collapse in settlement talks that could leave GM on the hook for up to $1 billion and take as much as 50 cents per share of the company’s stock price.

Another Sign?

What are signs that the country is about to collapse economically? Sentient people who understand the scope of our nation’s debt already know the clock is ticking. So does the government (MRAPs, ammunition and the NDAA). But what about the masses? The majority of people who cover their eyes and ears or have sold their freedom for a government “entitlement”?

One of the major signs for me is the number of people who eat out. If the restaurants are full, people are ignoring reality and continuing down the train tracks. And the restaurants have been full. Until now.

US Restaurant Spending “Pretty Ugly” In February

February marks the first three-months of consecutive declines in restaurant sales in almost three years as Bloomberg reports consumers caught in “an emotional moment” spooked by higher payroll taxes, surging healthcare premia, and spiking energy costs. “February was pretty ugly” for many chains after January delivered an initial blow.”

Malcolm Knapp notes that “it’s important to keep in mind that companies also are facing unusually tough comparable sales because of favorable weather in 2012,” so the result is an industry that’s been “a lot softer so far this year.”

It will hardly be a surprise to ZH readers but it appears that gas prices are key as Knapp notes, “that one-week spike was a killer; it destroyed sales in the first week of February,” and has overall put “meaningful pressure on the discretionary purchasing power,” of restaurants’ (like Darden) customers.

“People are acting fearfully, or you could almost say rationally in a way,” because it’s not surprising they change their dining habits when they feel less confident as once again it’s the middle class that appears under pressureCasual dining is “definitely being squeezed” because “it’s not food on-the-go and it’s not high-end food for people trying to treat themselves.”

SWISS TO VOTE ON CENTRAL BANK GOLD RESERVES

gold vault

A rightwing group has submitted more than 106,000 signatures to the federal authorities, seeking a vote on stopping the sale of gold reserves held by the Swiss National Bank (SNB). It also wants gold bars stored in the US to be returned.

The group, led by members of the Swiss People’s Party, the far-right Swiss Democrats and the Lega dei Ticinesi movement, is confident a nationwide vote will be called on the issue once the signatures are verified. A date still has to be set by the government. The collection of the necessary 100,000 signatures over 18 months was hard going but a last-minute effort ensured they reached the goal in time, activists said on Wednesday. People’s Party parliamentarian Luzi Stamm criticised the sale of gold reserves which started 13 years ago following a decision to abandon the gold standard.

What would you do if the United States declared a bank holiday for over a week?

David DeGerolamo

From AP

NICOSIA, Cyprus  — Banks in Cyprus will not open before Tuesday at the earliest as government officials try to find a new plan to stave off financial ruin, the central bank’s spokeswoman said Wednesday.

Aliki Stylianou said the banks would remain shut for another two days, Thursday and Friday. Monday is a national bank holiday in Cyprus.

The cash-strapped lenders have been closed since Saturday, when Cyprus said it would raid bank deposits to help fund its international bailout package, to avoid a bank run.

The Parliament this week rejected the plan to take a portion of bank deposits, leaving the country’s bailout plan in doubt.

Cypriot officials are looking for alternative ways to scrounge up the 5.8 billion euros ($7.51 billion) that the country’s euro area partners and the IMF expect in order to loan another 10 billion euros.

THE MARXIST-CAPITALIST SPECTRAL DOUGHNUT – ANN BARNHARDT

If I had a band, I’d name it “Spectral Doughnut”. But I don’t, so anyone who wants the name can have it.

Did you know that the official, fancy-pants mathematical term for a doughnut is “torus”? Well, not for a doughnut as a foodstuff, but for the shape of a doughnut: a tube bent around such that the two endpoints connect.

Conceptually, the torus is everywhere in life. Extremes on either side of a human spectrum have the nasty habit of being the same position. The most obvious example of this is in the political sphere, and while I’m not much of a Glenn Beck fan, Beck did explain this a few years ago. The far left is all about totalitarian control by a cadre of oligarchs. There really isn’t any such thing as a true dictatorship, because one man cannot physically force an entire government or people to do his will. He will always have a cadre of enablers and henchmen around him, and if he loses the support of that cadre of henchmen, they will kill him. Thus even the most seemingly solitary dictator is really just a frontman for an oligarchy. Dictatorial oligarchies use brute force to impose their will and have no respect for the Rule of Law. They consider themselves to be the law. If they want it, they take it, and if you don’t like that, they kill you. On the left, the most brutal thug with the worst case of psychopathy wins.

The far right is the same thing. The far right is anarchy, which means no government. This sounds good on the surface, especially when you’re face with the truly satanic government we have now, until you realize that also means NO RULE OF LAW. Every man for himself. In this environment, the most brutal thug with the worst case of psychopathy wins.

North Korea’s supreme military command said on Thursday its “precision attack” weapons have U.S. navy bases in Guam and Okinawa in their sights and will attack them if it is provoked.

“The United States is advised not to forget that our precision target tools have within their range the Anderson Air Force base on Guam where the B-52 takes off, as well as the Japanese mainland where nuclear powered submarines are deployed and the navy bases on Okinawa,” the North Korean command spokesman was quoted by KCNA news agency.

NC House Judiciary Subcommittee A Hearing on HB 17 – Say Goodbye to Restaurant Carry

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_F3BSfhL4E

Some things never change; such as the proceedings in House Judiciary Subcommittee A. The portion of HB 17 concerning the possession of a concealed handgun in a restaurant or eating establishment has become the victim of politics. It appears that the endless power struggles will never change in North Carolina: even with the same political party . Here is the section that was removed:

AN ACT TO ALLOW PERSONS WITH CONCEALED HANDGUN PERMITS TO POSSESS HANDGUNS IN RESTAURANTS AND EATING ESTABLISHMENTS IF NOT PROHIBITED BY THE POSTING OF A NOTICE PROHIBITING POSSESSION ON THE PREMISES

The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts:

SECTION 1.  G.S. 14‑269.3(b) is amended by adding a new subdivision to read:

(5)      A person on the premises of an eating establishment as defined in G.S. 18B‑1000(2) or a restaurant as defined in G.S. 18B‑1000(6), provided the person has a valid concealed handgun permit under Article 54B of Chapter 14 of the General Statutes. This subdivision shall not be construed to permit a person to carry a concealed handgun on the premises of an eating establishment or a restaurant where the person in legal possession or control of the premises has posted a conspicuous notice prohibiting the carrying of a concealed handgun on the premises in accordance with G.S. 14‑415.11(c).

As Chairman Blust explained this section was removed at the direction of “higher up levels” (25 secs).

Chairman Blust explained the need for confidentiality for firearm licenses and permits:

The records maintained by the sheriff pursuant to this section are confidential and are not a public record under G.S. 132‑1

Rep. Blust gave the example of the information released by the Journal News which resulted in at least one case of attempted burglary to steal firearms. However, Rep. Blust was not able to give any specifics when questioned.

Rep. McNeill (17m30s) states that everyone who applies for a concealed carry permit in North Carolina must undergo a mental health evaluation. While some sheriffs do have a form of mental health requirement as part of their application process, it is not a state requirement. Surprising, none of the members of the judiciary subcommittee are familiar with the law. This requirement was removed in Chatham County with the Republican Party became the majority on the Board of Commissioners.
