Directly taunting Israel, Syrian president Basher Assad says in an interview prerecorded for broadcast Thursday night, May 30, that the first batch of Russian S-300 anti-air missiles has arrived in Syria and a second consignment is on the way. The broadcast is scheduled to air simultaneously Thursday night over Hizballah’s Al Manar and Syrian state television channels.

The Syrian ruler was replying directly to the quote from Israel’s National Security Adviser Yakov Amidror that the S-300 batteries have not been delivered yet and when they are, Israel will destroy them.

Wednesday, May 29, DEBKAfile reported the landing at Latakia airport of a large Russian transport carrying 60 tons of unidentified freight. Labeled by Moscow “humanitarian aid,” it was in fact the first S-300 delivery to which Assad referred.

Continuing in the same vein, Assad said that not only would the Syrian army react to any further Israeli attacks, he “would not stand in the way of Syrian groups that want to fight for the liberation of the Golan.”

Holder runs into roadblocks on off-the-record meetings on leaks

Attorney General Eric Holder’s plans to sit down with media representatives to discuss guidelines for handling investigations into leaks to the news media have run into trouble.

The Associated Press issued a statement Wednesday objecting to plans for the meetings to be off the record. “If it is not on the record, AP will not attend and instead will offer our views on how the regulations should be updated in an open letter,” said Erin Madigan White, the AP’s media relations manager.

The New York Times is taking the same position. “It isn’t appropriate for us to attend an off-the-record meeting with the attorney general,” executive editor Jill Abramson said in a statement.

Like the New York Times and the Associated Press, CNN will decline the invitation for an off-the-record meeting. A CNN spokesperson says if the meeting with the attorney general is on the record, CNN would plan to participate.

The Huffington Post’s Washington bureau chief, Ryan Grim, also said he will not attend unless the meeting is on the record. “A conversation specifically about the freedom of the press should be an open one. We have a responsibility not to betray that,” Grim told CNN.

Gold Bar “Supply Constraints” In Singapore Sees Record Premiums

Gold rose to a one-week high, as the dollar and stocks retreated after another 5% plunge in Japan’s Nikkei. Silver, platinum and palladium advanced also.

Physical gold demand remains robust internationally and supply issues in Singapore have led to premiums reaching a record high there.

Some of the buying on futures markets may be shorts being forced to cover their record short position. The COT (Commitments of Traders) data clearly shows that there is the strong possibility of a significant squeeze of speculators short gold. This could be a catalyst to propel gold higher.

The volume for the Shanghai Gold Exchange’s benchmark cash contract surged to 19,599 kilograms yesterday from 15,641 kilograms the day before. In two days the volumes have nearly doubled and surged from 10,094 kilograms to 19,599 or 94%.

Nikkei Plunges Another 5% But “Unsourced” Stick Save Arrives Just In Time

One look at the 5%+ plunge in the Nikkei overnight and one would be allowed to wonder if this was it for Abenomics: with a 15% drop from recent highs, and the TOPIX Real Estate index down by more than 20%+ since mid-April, entering a bear market, what’s worse is that even the “wealth effect” Mrs Watanabe fanatics would be excused from having much hope going forward. The problem, however, is that in a world in which only the USDJPY matters as a risk signal, and only the stock market remains as a last bastion of “hope”, the overnight weakness pushing the dollar yen to just 50 pips above 100 threatened to crush the manipulated rally and force everyone to doubt the sustainability of central planning. So, sure enough, literally seconds we got the much needed stick save without which everything could have come tumbling down, namely based on an unsourced article out of Reuters that Japan’s Public Pension Fund is considering a change to its portfolio strategy that could allow domestic equity share of investments to rise in rallying market.

In other words, just like every other insolvent country, the pension fund is the last bastion of preserving the rally, when even the central bank fails. How pensioners will feel about losing their retirement money much faster than usual remains to be seen. What was notable is that Reuters, so well known for spreading disinformation during the European “headline” war, appears to be back to its old tricks:

The sources, who declined to be identified because they were not authorised to discuss the pending changes, said the fund is expected to announce the changes as soon as next month. 

An official at GPIF declined to comment on the matter.

There are many correlations between the Japanese and American economies:

1. Both import a majority of their petroleum requirements.

2. Both economies are based in capitalism.

3. Both nations have over a 100% Debt to GDP ratio.

4. Both have leaders who do not understand economics.

5. Both have inflated stock markets.

There are differences also but the most important correlation is the unlimited printing of fiat currencies. In Japan’s case, the initial benefits of Abenomics (based on the policies of prime Minister Shinzo Abe) saw an explosive rise of their Nikkei index and gave their people hope in a false economic recovery. In our case, stimulus is still a means to redistribute our wealth, falsely prop up our stock market and cover up the continued mortgage crisis. Abenomics was implemented late in 2012. It took six months for it to flame out and leave the Japanese people with high inflation.

So why is the United States different? The US dollar is the world’s reserve currency and the ability to print incredible amounts of “money” out of thin air is made “credible” by this status. What happens when the dollar is no longer the world’s reserve currency and the debt comes due? Look to Japan.

The U.S. Helps Reconstruct the Ottoman Empire

Since the mid-1990s the United States has intervened militarily in several internal armed conflicts in Europe and the Middle East: bombing Serbs and Serbia in support of Izetbegovic’s Moslem Regime in Bosnia in 1995, bombing Serbs and Serbia in support of KLA Moslems of Kosovo in 1999, bombing Libya’s Gaddafi regime in support of rebels in 2010. Each intervention was justified to Americans as motivated by humanitarian concerns: to protect Bosnian Moslems from genocidal Serbs, to protect Kosovo Moslems from genocidal Serbs, and to protect Libyans from their murderous dictator Muammar Gaddafi.

Other reasons for these interventions were also offered: to gain for the United States a strategic foothold in the Balkans, to defeat communism in Yugoslavia, to demonstrate to the world’s Moslems that the United States is not anti-Moslem, to redefine the role of NATO in the post-Cold War era, among others.

Each of these United States military interventions occurred in an area that had been part of the Ottoman Empire. In each, a secular regime was ultimately replaced by an Islamist one favoring sharia law and the creation of a world-wide Caliphate. The countries that experienced the “Arab Spring” of the 2010s without the help of American military intervention, Tunisia and Egypt, had also been part of the Ottoman Empire, and also ended up with Islamist regimes.

In the United States most discussions of the military conflicts of the 1990s in the Balkans and the “Arab Spring” of the 2010s do not mention that the areas involved had been part of the Ottoman Empire; these included Turkey, the Moslem-populated areas around the Mediterranean, Iraq, the coastal regions of the Arabian Peninsula and parts of the Balkans. In the areas that experienced the Arab Spring Turkey’s role in every instance has been to support the rebels and quickly recognize them as the legitimate government of the country in upheaval.

Record 10,978,040 Now on Disability; ‘Disability’ Would Be 8th Most Populous State

The total number of people in the United States now receiving federal disability benefits hit a record 10,978,040 in May, up from 10,962,532 million in April, according to newly released data from the Social Security Administration.

The 10,978,040 disability beneficiaries in the United States now exceed the population of all but seven states. For example, there are more Americans collecting disability today than there are people living in Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, New Jersey or Virginia.

The record 10,978,040 total disability beneficiaries in May, included a record 8,877,921 disabled workers (up from 8,865,586 in April), a record 1,939,687 children of disabled workers (up from 1,936,236 in April), and 160,432 spouses of disabled workers.

May was the 196th straight month that the number of American workers collecting federal disability payments increased. The last time the number of Americans collecting disability decreased was in January 1997. That month the number of workers taking disability dropped by 249 people—from 4,385,623 in December 1996 to 4,385,374 in January 1997.

Former Republican and Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee is changing political parties and becoming a Democrat, Politico first reported Wednesday.

Chafee served in the U.S. Senate as a Republican before winning the Rhode Island governorship as an independent in 2010. He campaigned for President Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012, but held off on making his alliance with the Democratic Party official. Now, Chafee “absolutely intends to switch his party registration” before facing re-election in 2014, a source told Politico.

Israel’s defense chief said Tuesday a Russian plan to supply sophisticated anti-aircraft missiles to Syria was a “threat” and signaled that Israel is prepared to use force to stop the delivery.

The warning by Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon ratcheted up tensions with Moscow over the planned sale of S-300 air-defense missiles to Syria. Earlier in the day, a top Russian official said his government remained committed to the deal.

Israel has been lobbying Moscow to halt the sale, fearing the missiles would upset the balance of power in the region and could slip into the hands of hostile groups, including the Lebanese militia Hezbollah, a close ally of the Syrian regime.

Maryland Counties Nullify New Gun Laws

() –  In a victory for Maryland concealed carry, open carry, and gun Rights, Carroll County has passed resolution 884-2013, a Second Amendment Preservation Act.

constitution-pistol“The Board reasonably believes the MFSA to be “pretended” (unconstitutional) legislation and be it further resolved that the Board, in affirmation of the Second Amendment rights of the citizens of Carroll County, herein direct that Carroll County Government will not authorize or appropriate government funds, resources, employees, agencies, contractors, buildings, detention centers or offices for the purpose of enforcing any element of the MFSA that infringes on the right of the people to keep and bear arms” [Source Legislation]  

Two other counties, Cecil and Hartford, have also joined Carroll County, Maryland, in nullifying new Maryland gun control legislation, which: 

  • Bans 45 types of Rifles
  • Bans magazines carrying more than 10 bullets, and criminalizes the utilization of said magazines already owned
  • Deputizes doctors against patients, encourages reporting of gun owners to government, prohibits ownership of guns by “mentally ill” deemed so by the State
  • Requires fingerprinting for new handgun purchases
  • Requires licensing and training for new handgun purchases

It’s Not About Obama…

That’s right, in case you’ve never read a real history book with concrete facts, the Russian revolution was an almost entirely fabricated event.  International financial interests, known today as “globalists” with no patriotic ties to any particular nation, supplied the funding, the philosophy, and even the leadership of the Bolshevik uprising against Nicholas II.

In 1917, the Bolshevik Revolution gained general victory against the empire’s sovereign, Czar Nicholas Romanov II, a monarchal ruler widely considered despotic and inhumane in his treatment of the Russian citizenry.  After the dethroned Romanov family was summarily executed by former members of the military, the Bolshevik rampage continued against the remnants of the “White Russians”, culminating in a bloody civil war.  In the minds of the common populace, the communist propaganda was legitimate.  The people had been terribly oppressed, and the world war in Europe was draining any hope of prosperity they had left.  The Russians were ready for an abrupt and even violent change in their political leadership.

However, unbeknownst to them, a great upheaval was about to be supplied for them.  Their anger and rage, their revolutionary spirit, was about to be exploited to produce vast gains for international interests and create a massive experiment in collectivist tyranny that would span decades and claim millions of innocent lives.

The Chinese Are Coming (to North Carolina), And They Want America’s Pork

In a stunning M&A move, an American pork icon – Smithfield Foods, may be acquired as soon as today by China’s Shuanghui, also known as Shineway, which is China’s largest pork producer. The Chinese are coming, and they want America’s pork. It unclear how soon after the deal gets clearance by the Committee on Foreign Investment (if it does at all) will the US be subject to that well-honored China excess pig “clearance” strategy: floating ’em down the river.

From WSJ:

Chinese meat producer Shuanghui Group is close to a deal to acquire Smithfield Foods Inc. for between $4.5 billion and $5 billion, according to people familiar with the matter.

The sale of the Smithfield, Va.-based pork and meat producer could be announced as soon as Wednesday morning, and comes on the heels of agitation from a large shareholder to split up the company.

The bid by Shuanghui, also known as Shineway, represents a roughly 30% premium over Tuesday’s close of $25.97, the people said. But a deal could be subject to review by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, they said.

Smithfield’s board of directors is concerned about the deal passing muster with CFIUS review, said a person familiar with the matter. The deal is structured with a reverse breakup fee in the event that the deal falls apart due to regulatory issues, the person said.
